CSO Appoints Jim Copenhaver as Interim President and CEO
|
DENVER-October 12, 2011 - The Colorado Symphony Board of Trustees announced today that it has appointed Jim Copenhaver as the association's Interim President and CEO, replacing James Palermo.
Jim Copenhaver served as past Executive Director to the Colorado Symphony and is a Senior Partner with JC Enterprises, a management consulting firm. He recently served as Interim President/CEO of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters in Washington, DC.
Over the next two months, the CSA board, under the leadership of newly elected co-chairs, Jerome Kern and Mary Rossick Kern, are working diligently with the staff and musicians to revise the existing budget and create a financially maintainable business model.
"Our primary objective is to evolve the business model of the organization to better match today's economic climate. Our community deserves a great orchestra and it is our responsibility to preserve this treasure for this generation and future generations," says board co-chair, Jerome Kern. "We encourage people to take advantage of the opportunity to hear wonderful music performed by an outstandingly talented orchestra over the next few months and throughout the new year."
The Colorado Symphony performs this weekend (Friday-Sunday) under the direction of Peter Oundjian and features renowned violinist, Robert McDuffie. The program includes Beethoven's inspirational 7th Symphony. A revised concert schedule is in place for the balance of October and November. The original concert schedule for the 2011-2012 season will resume on December 5. For more information and to purchase concert tickets, visit www.coloradosymphony.org

Longtime musicians remember days when gigs were plentiful in Vegas
|
By Sonya Padgett
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL Posted: Sep. 25, 2011 | 12:09 a.m. Bill Bailey remembers the days when he would say about his job: "I don't want to be doing this when I'm 50." Bailey, 61, played upright bass in the Desert Inn's house band in the early 1980s. It was a regular job that came with a regular paycheck and benefits and, like all regular jobs, there were times when it was frustrating. So when he would say that he didn't want to be doing "this" in his 50s, he meant the late nights and the drudgery that comes from playing the same music night in and night out. But this was not what he had in mind: a Las Vegas Strip mostly devoid of live musical accompaniment, shows that perform to prerecorded scores, a career abbreviated by a lack of opportunities in a town where there once were too many. "I was aware that I had one of the best jobs in the world," Bailey says. "To get a regular paycheck on a mostly regular basis, to get the union benefits for doing what you love, it was a great privilege. I'm sure I didn't appreciate it at the time. Read On

Philly Orchestra musicians' national pension fund opposes contract proposal
|
October 13, 2011 By Peter Dobrin, Inquirer Music Critic Even before details have been revealed on a new labor contract for Philadelphia Orchestra musicians, the national pension fund representing 50,000 musicians says it opposes the contract because it ends the association's participation in the pension fund. "In light of the trustees' responsibility under federal pension law, the fund currently sees no alternative to litigation to protect the interests of all of its participating musicians," said Alan Raphael, cochair of the American Federation of Musicians and Employers Pension Fund. In a statement, the fund said "an agreement reached by the Philadelphia Orchestra Association is the culmination of a strategy to avoid its obligation to pay the fund contributions of up to $35 million it owes for benefits earned by its musicians." A Metropolitan Opera High Note, as Donations Hit $182 Million
|
By DANIEL J. WAKIN and KEVIN FLYNN Published: October 10, 2011 New York Times
Velvet costumes evoked Tudor opulence at Donizetti's "Anna Bolena" during last month's opening night at the Metropolitan Opera. The red carpet was out; celebrities lent pop culture pizazz; and the audience had a genuine star, Anna Netrebko, to cheer for, which it did, lustily. In the warren of Met administrative offices, the people who run one of the world's busiest opera houses had something else to applaud: a record amount of contributions for the fiscal year that ended in July. According to preliminary figures released for the first time, the Met hauled in $182 million, an astonishing amount in a tough economic climate and 50 percent more than it raised just the year before. Second Tuesdays at Trinity Concert Series, 10/25
| Our bonus concert on October 25 will feature musicians from the Colorado Symphony in an intriguing and thought-provoking evening of string quartet music. Violinists Erik Peterson and David Waldman, violist Kelly Shanafelt, and cellist Thomas Heinrich will perform Schubert's String Quartet #14 in D minor (Death and the Maiden) and George Crumb's Black Angels for Electric String Quartet. Schubert's D minor string quartet is haunted by allusions to loss and grief, with the second movement consisting of five variations on the poem, "Death and the Maiden." Crumb's electric string quartet is subtitled Thirteen images from the dark land and as the composer himself noted, is probably the only quartet to have been inspired by the Vietnam War. The use of electric string instruments is not only unusual, but gives an other-worldly effect, and Crumb has the performers also playing various percussion instruments and water-filled crystal goblets for a "glass harmonica" effect. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Parking is free. Trinity Presbyterian Church 7755 Vance Drive, Arvada 80003 For more information, please visit the church website at www.tpcarvada.org or call 303-422-3656 x25.

Vote Yes on Initiative 300: Earned Paid Sick Days
|
VOTE YES for Paid Sick and Safe Time -Initiative 300-on your October ballot.
Currently, 41 percent of Denver workers do not have earned paid sick days. That means more than 108,000 workers, many in low-wage sectors like food service, personal health care and child care, are forced to choose between their health and a day's wages. And in this tough economy, taking unpaid time off is not an option for too many hard-working people, even when they are sick.
Voting yes on Initiative 300 will ensure Denver workers have paid sick days and will no longer have to make the impossible decision between their families they love and the jobs they need.
We can change that. Help keep workers in their jobs:

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
