CSO cancels 10 of 20 concerts scheduled this fall

By Kyle MacMillan
10/06/2011 08:13:11 AM MDT

Battling a severe budget crisis, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday abruptly canceled half of its 20 scheduled concerts over the next two months, but it vowed to return to full operations in early December.

The stopgap plan will result in "hundreds of thousands of dollars" in emergency savings and give the orchestra time to regroup, said Jerome Kern, who was elected board co-chairman Monday. He declined to provide exact numbers but said it includes another "huge" cut in musician salaries, on top of a 9 percent reduction the players agreed to last month.

"The options were to either suspend operations completely while we figured out where this mess was or to go to a reduced schedule, and everybody thought it would be better if the orchestra was in the community playing rather than not playing at all for two months," Kern said.

The musicians are backing the move and are hopeful that "the community will rally behind" the orchestra, said Pete Vriesenga, president of the Denver Musicians Association.

In all, the orchestra has canceled 10 subscription concerts: three sets of its mainstay Masterworks programs, including "Cleo Parker Robinson Dances Romeo & Juliet," a showcase for the local troupe set for Nov. 18-20, as well an Oct. 30 Halloween concert and an Inside the Score program on Nov. 11. Education programs, including youth concerts on Nov. 10 and 15, will proceed as planned.

CSO suffers from unstable board, lack of big backers

By Kyle MacMillan
Denver Post Fine Arts Critic
10/07/2011 10:47:09 AM MDT

"Like any organization, they're going to need to build trust and goodwill and continue to have longtime supporters of the organization but also bring in kind of new blood and new people into their world," said Deborah Jordy, executive director of the Colorado Business Committee on the Arts.

Primarily, the work will be done by a new board of directors because more than 20 of the orchestra's 30 community board members resigned in September. The reason: fatigue over trying to make an art form survive in a difficult environment, and rancor between the musicians' union and the board as they haggled over money.

The symphony has little cash on hand and its endowment, the money it has set aside in interest-bearing accounts to get through operational shortfalls, is "minimal," according to an internal report assembled this year.

City [San Antonio] may get little or no symphony

Finances could drive off musicians.
By David Hendricks
dhendricks@express-news.net
Friday, October 7, 2011

As the downbeat falls on the indebted San Antonio Symphony's 2011-12 performance season, the outlook for finishing the season clangs with doubt.

So does the outlook for the scheduled 2014 opening of the $195 million Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. The showcase building may be financed and finished by then, but no assurances can be made that a substantive performing arts group will move in that is capable of more than only a handful of performances a year.

Because by then, if the symphony has to start canceling performances or seasons now, musicians may have moved on to more stable stages in other cities, leaving a ragtag assemblage behind.

As the Tobin Center continues its capital campaign, the 72-musician San Antonio Symphony - the city's largest performing arts group - cannot find enough money for its annual operating budget, and it begs the ironic question: is the Tobin Center pulling money away from the symphony?

Kansas City's New Star

by Rebecca Winzenried

An estimated 55,000 people turned out for an open house at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City on September 18, some standing in the rain for an hour and an half to gain entry. The free event was part of a weekend of galas and performances marking the grand opening of the $413 million, dual-theater facility that is the new home of the Kansas City Symphony, Lyric Opera, and Kansas City Ballet. And the remarkable turnout is an indicator of the curiosity generated by the venue, which is poised to become the city's new landmark and center of cultural activity.

BERNSTEIN / Overture to Candide
GLASS / Violin Concerto No. 2, "The American Four Seasons"
BEETHOVEN / Symphony No. 7
Popular violinist Robert McDuffie performs Philip Glass' new concerto, a work which receives enthusiastic standing ovations everywhere it is performed. The program closes with Beethoven's 7th Symphony, his most universal. Its lyricism, rhythmic energy and deep humanity are unsurpassed.

Second Tuesdays at Trinity Concert Series, 10/11, 10/25
Second Tuesdays at Trinity Concert Series is pleased to present
two "don't miss" events in October!

This coming Tuesday, October 11, we are proud to present
Relative Pitch: A Night of Singular Duos,
featuring Matthew Switzer & Emily Switzer.

Matthew Switzer is the Assistant Principal Cellist of the Colorado Symphony, as well as the Music Director and Conductor of the Lakewood Symphony.  He also recently composed an orchestral score for narrator and orchestra called Ansel and The Great Tree, based on the book by the same name authored by his mother, Rose Switzer.

Emily Switzer, besides being the 16 year old daughter of Colorado Symphony musicians Matthew Switzer and Marsha Holmes, is a violin soloist in her own right. She has appeared numerous times as soloist with the Lakewood Symphony, "Up Close and Musical," and the Denver Young Artists Orchestra. She currently serves as Concertmaster of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra and is in eleventh grade at the Kent Denver School.

*   *   *

Our bonus concert on October 25 will feature musicians from the Colorado Symphony in an intriguing and
thought-provoking evening of string quartet music.
Violinists Erik Peterson and David Waldman, violist Kelly Shanafelt,
and cellist Thomas Heinrich will perform
Schubert's String Quartet #14 in D minor (Death and the Maiden)
and George Crumb's Black Angels for Electric String Quartet.

Schubert's D minor string quartet is haunted by allusions to loss and grief, with the second movement consisting of five variations
on the poem, "Death and the Maiden."
Crumb's electric string quartet is subtitled Thirteen images from the dark land and as the composer himself noted, is probably the only quartet to have been inspired by the Vietnam War. The use of electric string instruments is not only unusual, but gives an other-worldly effect, and Crumb has the performers also playing various percussion instruments and water-filled crystal goblets for a "glass harmonica" effect.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.  Parking is free.

Jobless Rate Stuck--9.1 Percent
Oct. 7, 2011

America wants to work, but there are few jobs. The September jobless rate remained at 9.1 percent and 26 million Americans are unemployed, underemployed or have stopped looking for work. The economy added just 103,000 jobs. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress continue to play political games rather than focus on legislation to create jobs as they seek to block President Obama's American Jobs Act.

AFM Joins Labor Community in Occupy Wall Street Protests

October 5, 2011

Yesterday, AFM Local 802 Executive Board members voted unanimously to support and participate in today's Occupy Wall Street Labor Community march. The vote came in the wake of mounting demonstrations taking place nationwide, condemning business practices on Wall Street that adversely affect working-class Americans.

American Federation of Musicians (AFM) President Ray Hair announced his participation in the Occupy Wall Street Labor Community march along with activist members of AFM Local 802. Hair explains he is joining the march "in an effort to focus attention on the economic plight of America's working people. We have borne the brunt of employer-driven contract concessions, pension takeaways and benefit givebacks-suffering one-sided sacrifices-while America's ruling class, the money men of Wall Street, who blew out the economy, walk away unscathed, bailed out with their big bonuses, consolidating their power," says Hair.

"This is the latest episode in the classic struggle of Capital vs. Labor," he continues. "Capital has cleaned up on American workers in these hard times, very nearly cleaning us out. This afternoon, I'll be demonstrating the AFM's solidarity with the labor community by marching with Local 802 members to expand the struggle to hold Wall Street accountable for the lopsided imbalance in the US economy."

The Chamber String Ensemble is currently under the direction of Dr. Charles Lee and rehearses on Monday afternoons from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Its winter concert is scheduled for Wednesday, December 7. While students must register for the course, faculty and staff do not need to register but may do so if they are seeking credit.

Interested faculty, staff and community string players are encouraged to contact Charles Lee via email at: clee@regis.edu
Or call Charles at (303) 947-9961 for more information.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
