Twenty Colorado Symphony board members resign
|
A remaining trustee says those who resigned were angry that musicians put off a vote on pay cuts
By Kyle MacMillan Denver Post Fine Arts Critic September 25, 2011
A week of rancorous negotiations between the Colorado Symphony and its 79 full-time musicians ended Friday with the resignation of about half the orchestra's board and the players' agreement to an emergency 9 percent pay cut.
Twenty of the 30 community members on the symphony's board of trustees have stepped down, including three who were set to become the chairman, vice chairman and treasurer.
"No one has been asked to leave in any way, shape or form," symphony spokeswoman Margaret Williams said in an e-mail Saturday.
The defections left big questions this weekend about not only the future makeup of the board but also the future of the financially troubled orchestra in general.
According to a news release late Friday evening, the remaining board is tentatively scheduled to meet Monday, with the approval of a restructured budget for 2011-12 high on its agenda.

Andy Lunsford Lost Business, But Finds Hidden Talent Jaclyn Allen, 7NEWS Reporter MDT September 23, 2011 FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Four years ago, Andrew Lunsford was an unemployed countertop maker declaring bankruptcy. When the economy went under, so did his Denver granite countertop business. He lost everything except his young family. His business, his house, and his cars were gone. "I was miserable," said Lunsford. "I didn't know what to do. I couldn't find solace anywhere." Depressed and desperate, he noticed a classical music CD containing opera on his desk and played it. "I was like, 'How do they do that?'" said Lunsford, "And I started to sing out and see if I could make those sounds. I'm sure I looked like an idiot if anybody would have watched." What happened next is nothing short of remarkable.Read On

Important Survey on Musician Income
|
 |
9/7/2011 Important Survey on Musician Income |
Dear PETER JOHN, The Future of Music Coalition (FMC), in collaboration with the AFM, is conducting an unprecedented, large-scale survey on U.S. musicians' income. I urge all AFM members in the United States to participate. It is imperative that the diverse voices of our union be heard, from orchestral musicians to freelancers, from jazz musicians to rockers, from recording musicians to theatre musicians. The anonymous online survey, called " How Do You Make Money from Music?", is for US-based musicians and composers of all types. Thousands of musicians will complete the survey, which is open now through October 28 and takes as little as ten minutes to complete. The survey is just one part of the FMC's Artists Revenue Streams Project. Through November 2011, the FMC will also be interviewing musicians, songwriters, and composers personally to collect more detailed information about the ways they are generating income from music. The interviews are done via phone or Skype, and take about an hour. There is a small stipend for interviewees to compensate them for their time. If you're interested in participating, you can apply here. Finally, the FMC is also presenting anonymous case studies of individual artists. If you are interested in being one of these "featured" musicians, contact the FMC. Please take part in this important work -- as professional musicians and union members, our numbers must be accurately reflected in this project. For that to happen, we need your participation. Click here to take the online survey. In solidarity, Raymond M. Hair, Jr. International President American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
