The Colorado Symphony and its players union began renegotiating their recently approved labor agreement Friday as part of an attempt to slash expenses and balance the organization's 2011-12 budget.

The CSO ended its 2010-11 fiscal year in June with a $647,000 budget deficit, according to a recent "sustainability study committee" report. The organization has a cash reserve of just $16,000 and a "minimal endowment."

The Denver Municipal Band, 9/24
Denver Municipal Band

The Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.

The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Surviving the ordeal, he settled in Denver where he was active in many of the city's early musical activities. Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band, it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and 80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

Important Survey on Musician Income

AFM - American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada
9/7/2011 Important Survey on Musician Income
Dear PETER JOHN,

The Future of Music Coalition (FMC), in collaboration with the AFM, is conducting an unprecedented, large-scale survey on U.S. musicians' income.

I urge all AFM members in the United States to participate. It is imperative that the diverse voices of our union be heard, from orchestral musicians to freelancers, from jazz musicians to rockers, from recording musicians to theatre musicians.

The anonymous online survey, called "How Do You Make Money from Music?", is for US-based musicians and composers of all types. Thousands of musicians will complete the survey, which is open now through October 28 and takes as little as ten minutes to complete.

http://broadcast.afm.org/lt.php?c=302&m=200&nl=51&s=638ebaf14ed04ddbe1e8db8ff27a51e2&lid=2931&l=-http--futureofmusic.org/article/research/artist-revenue-streams

The survey is just one part of the FMC's Artists Revenue Streams Project. Through November 2011, the FMC will also be interviewing musicians, songwriters, and composers personally to collect more detailed information about the ways they are generating income from music. The interviews are done via phone or Skype, and take about an hour. There is a small stipend for interviewees to compensate them for their time. If you're interested in participating, you can apply here.

Finally, the FMC is also presenting anonymous case studies of individual artists. If you are interested in being one of these "featured" musicians, contact the FMC.

Please take part in this important work -- as professional musicians and union members, our numbers must be accurately reflected in this project. For that to happen, we need your participation.

Click here to take the online survey.

Trumka: American Jobs Act 'Important and Necessary'
Sept. 9, 2011

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says the American Jobs Act that President Obama presented to a joint session of Congress last night shows Obama "is willing to go to the mat to create new jobs on a substantial scale." He also says, "It is only the opening bid. We expect to see more proposals in the next weeks and months to put America back to work."

What's Happening in Kansas? Not What You Think
Sept. 7, 2011

Unlike the fantasyland of Oz, there is something quite real going on today in Kansas. Workers and management at Spirit AeroSystems are working together to build a very successful business. The new 10-year contract between the aerospace supplier and the 3,800 Machinists (IAM) members "is a great lesson for businesses that can get over a myopic, right-wing view of how labor can work with them," says IAM President Tom Buffenbarger.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
