DMA/Labor Supporters - Extending well beyond the membership
|
 | Jim and Stephanie Kroepfl |
Jim Kroepfl called the DMA last March as worker protests in Wisconsin were drawing historic crowds of 85,000 to 100,000 per day. Jim said that he was heading out to WI to attend the rally and asked if he could wear a DMA t-shirt at the event. Jim says "it was bitter cold day in Madison so the t-shirts didn't get quite the exposure they could have." The photo was taken on March 12, 2011. There were a number of celebrities in attendance that day, including Jesse Jackson and Susan Sarandon, as well as numerous tractor-driving farmers and members of most unions including, the teachers, firefighters, police, teamsters, and others. It was the climax of weeks of protest and the first day that the Democratic State Senators returned from their "exile" in Illinois. Since that day, two of the Senators that supported Governor Walker's anti-union bill have lost in special recall elections. Jim Kroepfl is a musician from Grand County, Colorado, and a member of the Acme Tribute Band. Jim is one of milliions of Americans who are not presently members of a Labor Union, but will stand up for labor just the same. Jim looks forward to joining the DMA, but it looks like he already has.

Legislator Calls for Clarifying Copyright Law
|
By LARRY ROHTER
Published: August 28, 2011 NY Times Arguing that Congress has an obligation "to preserve fairness and justice for artists," the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee has called for a revision of United States copyright law to remove ambiguities in the current statute about who is eligible to reclaim ownership rights to songs and sound recordings.
"For too long the work of musicians has been used to create enormous profits for record labels, radio stations and others, without fairly distributing these profits to the artists," said Representative John Conyers Jr. of Michigan, who was chairman of the committee until January. Because "copyrights are a tool to be used by creators to earn a living from their work," he added, it is important to ensure "a fair marketplace." Read On

Bankruptcy fees pass $3 million mark for Philadelphia Orchestra
|
Thursday, August 25, 2011 philly.com
July brought $500,000 in new legal bills for the Philadelphia Orchestra Association. Five of the six major law firms and other consultants to the Association's chapter 11 case submitted invoices for court approval for the period covering July 1-31, bringing the total to just over $3 million.
In its strategic plan, the Association estimated that the entire case would cost $2.9 million in professional fees. (In addition, the plan called for $3 million to allow for settlement with creditors, and $2.5 million to cover any declines in ticket sales and donations during bankruptcy.)

Kentucky Opera adds third 'Carmen' performance
|
By Elizabeth Kramer | The Courier-Journal
The Kentucky Opera announced Thursday that it has scheduled a third performance of "Carmen" for Sept. 30, even though it has not yet secured musicians to play for its run of the opera.
The Louisville Orchestra usually plays for the opera, and it has canceled all performances for September and October. The orchestra's management and the musicians are in contentious negotiations over a new collective bargaining agreement. The musicians have been without a contract since May. Opera general director David Roth said that the organization expects to reach an agreement with Local 11-637 of the American Federation of Musicians to contract musicians for the performance by this weekend. BSO inks three-year labor agreement |
By Clarence Fanto Berkshire Eagle Tuesday August 30, 2011
LENOX -- With the help of a federal mediator, members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra ratified a new three-year labor agreement that took effect Monday. The minimum weekly pay for the players will rise from $2,539 in the upcoming year to $2,694 in 2013-14. Principal first-desk players typically are paid well above the minimum. Until the new agreement was reached, musicians were performing under a two-year extension of their previous labor agreement, with no increases in pay or benefits since 2008-09. Acknowledging the importance of exposure on radio and digital platforms, the agreement also includes expanded BSO radio presence on stations throughout New England and upstate New York, including WAMC Northeast Public Radio and WFCR New England Public Radio. The Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.
The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." CEOs' Pay Bigger Than Corporations' Tax Bills

Here's a stunner. Of last year's 100 highest-paid U.S. corporate chief executives, 25 took home more in CEO pay than their company paid in 2010 federal corporate income taxes, according to a new report from the Institute for Policy Studies. The report also reveals that in addition to handing their CEOs big dollars, 20 of the 25 corporations in the study spent more on lobbying lawmakers than they paid in corporate taxes. Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
