AFM Places Louisville Orchestra on Unfair List

August 22nd, 2011

The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) has placed the Louisville Orchestra on its "Unfair List," following the orchestra's emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy without a collective bargaining agreement. At an August 15 court hearing, Judge David Stosberg approved the orchestra's reorganization plan, effectively bringing it out of bankruptcy. The AFM had opposed the plan, citing the fact that it is not viable without employed musicians.

Louisville Orchestra musicians had rejected management's last contract offer, which was presented as an ultimatum. The offer would have employed some musicians for 30 weeks per year, while employing others for only 10 or 20 weeks per year. Since proposing the tiered arrangement, management has been unwilling to negotiate.

Following the August 15 hearing, Louisville Orchestra Executive Director Robert Birman stated that the orchestra would work toward a contract with its current musicians, who are AFM members, but that it may also pursue agreements with non-AFM musicians.

"The Louisville Orchestra's management is mistaken to believe that a pick-up ensemble would be a satisfactory replacement for the world-class symphony orchestra that patrons have come to expect in Louisville," says AFM President Ray Hair. "The AFM will continue to fight on behalf of its members to keep the orchestra intact and to secure a fair contract."

AFM members who render musical services for employers placed on the "Unfair List" are subject to penalty under AFM bylaws.

Tour Manager's Caution Likely Saved Sugarland's Lives

The Boot
Posted Aug 16th 2011 by Kenneth Partridge

Whatever Sugarland is paying tour manager Hellen Rollens, it isn't enough.

Saturday night, as Rollens looked at the dark skies gathering over Indianapolis, scene of the Indiana State Fair, she opted to momentarily hold the country duo backstage. That decision likely saved the lives of group members Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush, as well as their band and crew, since seconds later, heavy wind toppled the stage, killing five people and injuring almost 200 more.

"As a tour manager, it's super important to understand what the weather conditions are when you play outside," Gail Gellman, Sugarland's manager, told the Associated Press. "We've always talked about not putting the band on during wind, lightning or heavy rain.

"Everybody was standing in a prayer circle getting ready to go onstage," she continued, "and Hellen, as she was walking down the ramp, the stage fell. So her decision to hold them for literally a minute saved every band member and crew's life."

Musicians 'emotionally blackmailed' into playing at charity events for free
By Sophie Hudson,Third Sector Online,8 August 2011

[London, UK] Musicians' Union says performers should be paid like other staff associated with fundraising events

Musicians are being "emotionally blackmailed" into playing at charity events for free and should not be expected to perform without being paid, according to the Musicians’ Union.

The union will put forward a motion at the TUC annual conference next month which raises the issue of how musicians are paid for performing at fundraising events.

"It is wrong that many performing artists are expected to work for nothing when they are engaged for charitable and fundraising events," the motion says.

"It is extremely unfair to put professional musicians into a situation where they are emotionally blackmailed into working for no fee and are asked to give their services to a good cause. This is particularly unjust when others associated with the event, such as venue staff, lawyers and caterers, are being paid."

It says musicians should be able to choose whether to donate to good causes without feeling pressured to do so.

A Musicians' Union spokeswoman told Third Sector it was particularly concerned about musicians who did not earn much being asked to play at charity gigs for free.

She said this was happening more frequently recently, perhaps because of the economic environment.

Both the Institute of Fundraising and the NCVO declined to comment.

The Denver Municipal Band, 8/26 - 9/24
Denver Municipal Band

The Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.

The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Surviving the ordeal, he settled in Denver where he was active in many of the city's early musical activities. Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band, it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and 80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
