A Note About My Littleton, CO Show
by Richard Marx Posted on Facebook, Friday, July 29, 2011 at 4:59pm | Richard Marx
|
On August 14, I will perform a concert in Littleton, Colorado at a venue called Hudson Gardens. This show, like several I have done in the past year, will be me acoustic, and twenty local string players. I've had the pleasure of performing this way in the recent past with great players in Ocean City, Md; Sandy, Ut and Durant, Ok.
I recently became aware that the musicians approached by Hudson Gardens were asked to perform at my show for no fee but with the promise of more paid work in the future at other shows. I had no knowledge of this at the time it was proposed, as the hiring and payment of the local players was not something I nor my team was responsible for in this case. Anyone who knows me knows this would not sit well with me, and I would never want any musician to perform for free.
Informed that this was anathema to my sensibilities, Hudson Gardens subsequently hired another set of musicians at an appropriate and agreed upon wage, and we are all eagerly looking forward to performing the show.
I realize these are incredibly stressful and unpredictable economic times, and what any individual chooses to accept or negotiate is his or her choice, but I strongly urge any and all venue representatives and concert promoters to please keep in mind that without musicians, there is no music business. In my life and career, in both pre and post successful times, I have had countless experiences where I chose to forego a fee for a variety of circumstances, and have no regrets. But no musician should ever be put in a position to feel compelled to work for free.

Editor's Note: Richard Marx's statement is appreciated as it points to unfairness and exploitation that musicians face on a daily basis. Sadly, the truth behind this engagement is even harsher than Mr. Marx portrays since there was no promise of paid work in the future. Hudson Gardens' Press Release attempts to cover up this truth, and fails to mention the fact that the musicians were wrongfully replaced once it was understood that they must simply be paid.

Musicians union says Philadelphia Orchestra's proof on endowment falls short
|
August 09, 2011|By Peter Dobrin, Inquirer Music Critic In Round One of the American Federation of Musicians' effort to show that some of the Philadelphia Orchestra Association's endowment is not restricted by donor wishes, the association failed to produce documentation for 12 percent of gifts in the endowment. In a letter to the judge in the association's Chapter 11 case, the union's national pension fund says the first cache the orchestra provided shows 476 documents, 57 of which were images that said "documentation has not been found." The union lawyer, Herman L. "Hank" Goldsmith of Proskauer Rose, says the lack of records about specific donor wishes bolsters the union's suspicion that the orchestra cannot prove that its $120 million in various endowment accounts is donor-restricted. That being the case, he says, parts of the endowment can be used to satisfy the union's potential claim as the largest creditor in the bankruptcy. Read On

Convergence: The Beauty of the IMA Agreement |
By Deborah Newmark, Director, AFM Symphonic Electronic Media International Musician August, 2011 Convergence-what does it mean? The basic definition is the coming together of two or more distinct entities. One way the media world defines convergence is in the combining of two or more technologies into a single device. Examples are mobile phones that not only make traditional phone calls, but also include cameras, camcorders, music players, gaming applications, and voice recorders. This brings together computers, communications, and content. We are living in a world of rapid convergence and it both complicates and simplifies how we interface with that world. Our content is either being created as digital media or being converted to digital media. Once digitized it is possible to send those files through cable, satellite, or wireless networks, which can then be seen and heard on a multitude of devices from computers to cell phones to smartphones to televisions and DVRs. These advanced technological capabilities have brought about convergence in the business world as well, and content creators form partnerships with tech companies to bring the product to the consumer. In the US, the symphony, opera, and ballet world has tried to stay ahead of the technological curve by attempting to anticipate trends and changes that will affect our ability to create and distribute product. Musicians try to keep Syracuse Symphony alive |
MICHELLE BREIDENBACH, Syracuse Post-Standard, August 7, 2011
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - The unemployed musicians of the bankrupt Syracuse Symphony Orchestra have rallied on stages from Fayetteville to Rome this summer to keep the music alive.
While they played "Pomp and Circumstance" at free concerts, a group of power players has worked behind the scenes to bring a full-time orchestra back to life.
It has been such a secret that musicians who are packing up to leave Syracuse say they don't know about it.
Syracuse University is leading the quiet effort to bring a symphony back to Syracuse, according to Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney.
SU officials are not ready to talk about the details. But almost immediately after the SSO filed bankruptcy, Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor committed staff and resources to revive symphonic music in Syracuse, Mahoney said.

The Denver Municipal Band, 8/12 - 9/24
|
The Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.
The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Surviving the ordeal, he settled in Denver where he was active in many of the city's early musical activities. Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band, it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and 80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

Keith Olbermann's Debt Ceiling Special Comment:
|
'Our Government Has Now Given Up The Concept Of Right And Wrong'
Keith Olbermann excoriated Washington for the debt ceiling deal it struck over the weekend--and called for a protest movement to rise up against it.
In a Special Comment on his Monday show, Olbermann did not mince words about the deal, which passed the House on Monday and is headed for a vote in the Senate.
"Our government has now given up the concept of right and wrong," he said. "...Those who defend [the deal] have called it a credit to a pragmatic president who wins some sort of political 'points' because, having stood for almost nothing here, he gave away almost nothing for which he stood."
Olbermann said that the deal was founded on what he called four "Great Hypocrisies." The first was the so-called "Super Congress" that will have ultimate authority over further spending cuts. Olbermann said the committee seemed unconstitutional to him. He also blasted Republicans who called for a Balanced Budget Amendment, which he said contradicted their call for the new committee. And he lambasted the deal for containing no tax increases on the wealthy.
Olbermann then pivoted to address the audience.
"Where is the outrage to come from?" he asked rhetorically. "From you! It will do no good to wait for the politicians to suddenly atone for their sins...it will do no good to wait for the media to suddenly remember its origins as the 'free press'...it will do no good to wait for the apolitical public to get a clue."
He said that, without a protest movement, the "tide" that had brought the debt deal "will crush us, because those who created it are organized and unified and hell-bent. And the only response is to be organized and unified and hell-bent in return."
He said the public "must find again the energy and the purpose of the 1960's and early 1970's and we must protest this deal and all the goddamn deals to come, in the streets."

Stop Verizon Greed! 45,000 workers on strike
|
45,000 Verizon workers went on strike on Sunday, August 7th. The reason? Despite record profits, Verizon is refusing to bargain and is demanding that its workers add to those profits from their own pockets. In the last four years alone, Verizon made more than $19 billion in profits and compensated their top five executives more than a quarter of a billion dollars.
Take action now!
But apparently that's not enough. Starting on June 22 Verizon pushed proposals that would let them outsource more jobs, including sending jobs overseas, slash sick days, eliminate benefits for workers who get hurt on the job and cut the healthcare benefits they promised retirees. And they haven't budged. So on Sunday, 45,000 CWA and IBEW members decided to take a stand to force Verizon to abandon its Wisconsin-style tactics and come to the bargaining table and negotiate.
America has had enough of corporate greed. Now is the time for Verizon to do the right thing and come to the bargaining table in good faith instead of trying to kill the American dream for 45,000 middle-class workers.
Sign the petition now to tell Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam to stop Verizon's attack on the middle class and share his company's success with those who made it possible. It's time to let Verizon and other greedy corporations know that enough is enough. We're not just going to "hold the line", we're going to MOVE the line!

NY Bus Driver Fired for Rescuing Detectives During Violent Hail Storm
| TheBlaze Posted on August 9, 2011 at 10:26am by Billy Hallowell What did a Long Island bus driver receive after he helped three police officers who were stranded during a fierce hail storm? A pink slip, naturally. George Daw, a school bus driver, lost his job Monday after he "rescued" the officers and then transported them to safety. The incident unfolded during a violent storm last week. Daw snapped pictures as a near-monsoon moved through New Hyde Park. Traffic was stopped, cars were submerged and drivers panicked. Daw finally freed his yellow SUV school bus - with his one single child passenger aboard - amid sudden cries for help from three Nassau County police detectives. Read On

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
