MusiCares - Extending reach and services in Colorado
| MusiCares ® provides a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need. MusiCares' services and resources cover a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies, and each case is treated with integrity and confidentiality. MusiCares also focuses the resources and attention of the music industry on human service issues that directly impact the health and welfare of the music community.
Marty Rein is a professional bassist who lives in Fort Collins and is serving as a local ambassador for MusiCares and their efforts locally. We are proud to announce that Marty is now a member of the Denver Musicians Association and we look forward to assisting him in the weeks and years ahead. Marty's email is mjrein24@comcast.net
The following story was published this week in the Fort Collins newspaper The Coloradoan.
Fort Collins counselor draws on personal experience to help Northern Colorado musicians battle addiction Coloradoan.com | Marty Rein - The Coloradoan / V. Richard Haro |
Jul. 26, 2011 Performer Amy Winehouse was a legend in the making, fueled with a truly unique sound and style; at 27 she's dead, possibly the victim of her own lyrics: "They tried to make me go to rehab; but I said no, no, no." Winehouse's long struggle with substance abuse is one Marty J. Rein understands all too well. But after battling his own addictions to drugs and alcohol, the Fort Collins bass player went on to get his master's degree in counseling with a research background in addiction, followed by a doctorate in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on human development and family studies. "It's a tragic loss, and people who are struggling need to know that it's OK to ask for help," Rein said of Winehouse's death. The singer was found dead Saturday in her north London home. While the cause of death is still unknown, Winehouse's long battle with alcohol and drugs was highly publicized. In a business where the stress level can be high and the "office" is often a bar, the road to recovery can be particularly rocky, said Rein, who also volunteers with the MusiCares Foundation, an organization that provides support for musicians and their crew who are battling substance abuse. Louisville Orchestra must play a new economic tune

Orchestra must play a new economic tune; needs a realistic staffing plan, balanced budget Written by Brad Broecker Special to The Courier-Journal July 24, 2011 Brad Broecker is past CEO of the Louisville Orchestra. Not a day goes by that I don't find someone who asks "what is going to happen to the Louisville Orchestra?" Not being involved on a daily basis, I can only rely on what I observed when I served as the organization's CEO and express what I hope will happen based on today's current events.
In a nutshell, I believe the players need to accept the economic reality that exists in 2011 and the need to operate with a realistic employment plan and a balanced budget that is not dependent on bequests and crossed fingers. As a community, we all need to recognize the absolute need for 21st century innovation that will allow for reinvention of our orchestra in a way that will revitalize passion for its success and reverse the trend of declining audiences. Someone said recently, "How sad would it be if the orchestra went away and nobody noticed?" Think about it. We could be dangerously close to this happening. Read On

"But we are pleased to record steady progress in the right direction." Read On

Judge strikes compromise in orchestra bankruptcy |
|By Peter Dobrin, INQUIRER MUSIC CRITIC - July 25, 2011 The judge in the Philadelphia Orchestra Association's bankruptcy case has handed down a compromise in the tussle between management and the musicians' union over the scope of an investigation of the Association's finances. Noting that bankruptcy code allows broad discretion in such decisions, and is "designed to permit interested parties to 'discover assets, examin[e] transactions, and determin[e] whether wrongdoing has occurred,' " Judge Eric L. Frank issued a ruling Monday that allows the union access to documents already provided to other interested parties in the case, plus a mechanism for requesting additional documents later. Read On

The Denver Municipal Band, 7/29-31

The Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.
The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Surviving the ordeal, he settled in Denver where he was active in many of the city's early musical activities. Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band, it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and 80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
