| Lone Tree's 'Pay-to-Play' Orchestra in Concert, this Saturday

Public funding for symphony orchestras has become more and more scarce, which comes as no surprise. According to the American Symphony Orchestra League, public funding for symphony orchestras as a national average is now just 4%.
Incredibly, the Lone Tree Symphony, a pay-to-play orchestra, shattered this depressing statistic. LTSO's 2009 reports show that approximately 80% of the orchestra's $57,900 budget come from government sources. Much of this money became available to the LTSO after the November 2004 election when Lone Tree residents voted to participate in the SCFD Taxing District.
A few years later the LTSO started advocating for a new performance facility, which was ultimately presented to Lone Tree residents (Ballot Issue 2A) in May of 2008. The Lone Tree Cultural Facilities Ballot Issue 2A passed by a narrow margin of only 26 votes . The new $23 million Lone Tree Arts Center is now scheduled to open on August 11, just in time for LTSO's 2011-12 Season Opener on September 30.
This behavior demonstrates what Labor has warned about for centuries: Given the chance, an opportunistic management will take every dime that is available to it while leaving little or nothing in return. LTSO's race to the bottom sped right past zero (previously known as "the bottom") to a point where orchestra members must 'pay to play' while the community picks up 80% of the remaining tab.

An Opera on the Loose

NY Times - Editorial Published: July 15, 2011 The New York City Opera's schedule for the coming season is not quite busking in the streets, but close. The company, which used to present as many as 20 productions in a season at Lincoln Center, will present four, which will be staged at BAM, El Museo del Barrio, and the Gerald W. Players reject Louisville Orchestra offer; letter ultimatum spurs union rally
courier-journal.com 12:51 AM, Jul. 14, 2011 On the day Louisville Orchestra players were supposed to respond to an ultimatum from managers, they rallied and delivered personal messages to the CEO's office.About 40 musicians and music patrons gathered outside the orchestra offices Wednesday to deliver 50 letters and emails and hear answers to questions about the progress of ongoing mediation between the players and orchestra management. Discord between the two sides escalated when each musician received a six-page letter from orchestra CEO Robert Birman last week outlining a "per-service" pay model without benefits and a 159-date schedule. The players had to respond to the offer by Wednesday at 5 p.m. or their silence would be "treated as a voluntary refusal to work," the letter said. Read On

The Denver Municipal Band, 7/3 & 7/4

The Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.
The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Surviving the ordeal, he settled in Denver where he was active in many of the city's early musical activities. Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band, it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and 80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

 Deja Blu is an established regional variety dance band that plays weddings, corporate events, summer festivals and private parties. We've been together for over 10 years and we are currently 5 members including a lead female singer. We work with a full time sound man and offer optional 6- piece with a sax player. We have a business manager who handles all of the business side of booking, contracts, marketing, promotion and the web site. We all have flexible day jobs that allow us to take mid-week gigs in the summer and a few out of state weddings. We do about 50 shows/year with excellent money.
We are looking for an experienced player who can cover about 30% of the lead vocals. Must have an ear for harmony since 3 part harmony is vital to this band. Looking for strong, dynamic voice with power, range and great stage presence. We are asking for a 100% commitment to the band so, please - No guns for hire or anyone who works with multiple bands.

As required by law, the following items will be mailed to Participants, Beneficiaries, Employers, AFM and AFM Locals on July 29, 2011:
- Cover Letter including Rehabilitation Plan changes.
- Notice of Critical Status for Plan Year Ending March 31, 2012 - This notice advises you that, as was the case last year, the Plan was certified in critical status. It describes the legal reason for that certification and discusses the implications of it. Unlike last year, there are no additional changes being made to benefits as a result of this certification.
- Annual Funding Notice for Plan Year Ending March 31, 2011 - All defined benefit plans like the Plan are required to provide you with this annual notice, regardless of their funded status. Please be aware that parts of this notice reflect the finances of the Plan as of April 1, 2010, rather than March 31, 2011.
- Notice to Participants and Beneficiaries Regarding Funding Relief - This document advises you that the Plan's Board of Trustees elected to take advantage of special rules that provide a longer period for the Plan to take into account the unprecedented investment losses in the Plan year ending March 31, 2009. The notice also discusses the implications of that election.

DMA 2011-12 Wage Scales & Mileage Rates - Driver mileage is now 55.5 cents per mile
|

For over 100 years, DMA wage scales have established minimum acceptable compensation for defined services. These rates are established by the membership. Additionally, all scales are adjusted annually by the Colorado Cost of Living Index, effective September 1st (for contracts filed after September 1) of the current year. Any disputes that arise over the terms of this Schedule of Wages shall be adjudicated by the Denver Musicians Association Board of Directors. Whenever feasible, the Board of Directors may negotiate an agreement with prospective employers for contributions to the AFM-EP pension fund on behalf of the employed musicians. The IRS has also announced that mileage deduction will increase to 55.5 cents per mile. This rate, effective July 1, is now reflected in our scales for drivers, along with a .33 per mile rate for passengers. The Next SCFD Board Meeting is set for July 28 at 1pm - Let's all go!!

The June 23, 2011 SCFD board meeting was hosted by Hudson Gardens. The fiscal year 2010 audit was presented by Mark Elmshauser of Clifton Gunderson. The board passed Resolution 11-05 Pertaining to Acceptance of the 2010 Audit.
Treasurer Bob Grant reported that the April 2011 SCFD sales and use tax revenue was $3,402,878.50. This compares to April 2010 revenue of $3,201,694.48. The variance is $201,184.02, a 6.28% increase over month-to-date (MTD) April 2010. The 2011 year-to-date (YTD) sales and use tax revenue is $13,119,242.08. This compares to YTD 2010 revenue of $12,062,462.94. The variance is $1,056,779.14, an 8.76% increase in YTD 2011 over YTD 2010. He also presented several five-year budget projections for board review and discussion.
Executive Director Peg Long distributed the 2011 Tier II Qualifying Organizations Report to board members. Twenty-five organizations applied and successfully qualified for 2011 Tier II SCFD funding. The 2011 qualifying revenue threshold is $1,392,789.98. The 2011 projected allocation for Tier II is $8,348,367. Tier II organizations will present their annual certification reports to the board at the July and August board meetings.
In adopting Resolution 11-06 Pertaining to Recognition of the Scientific and Cultural Collaborative, the board acknowledged the important work of the collaborative over the past 17 years. The group is presently comprised of all Tier II organizations and The Denver Center for the Performing Arts.
Councilwoman Marcia Johnson, the City and County of Denver appointee to the SCFD board, was honored for her six years of board service as well as her 22 years as an elected public servant. Appointees to the SCFD board may serve a maximum of two, three-year terms. The Denver City Council has appointed Councilwoman Peggy Lehmann to be Ms. Johnson's successor on the SCFD board effective with the July 2011 board meeting.
The next regular SCFD Board meeting will be Thursday, July 28, 2011 at The Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex, Speer Blvd. and Arapahoe St.. The public meeting will begin at 1pm.

Group Pushing For Mandatory Sick Leave In Denver

DENVER -- A group that wants the city to require Denver businesses to give paid sick time to its employees picketed outside a downtown Denver Starbucks Tuesday.
Dozens of protesters from The Campaign for a Healthy Denver held signs with slogans like "No Coughing in Our Coffee" and "No viruses in our Ventis" outside Starbucks on the 16th Street Mall.
The group claims that Denver's Starbucks are not required to pay employees for sick time, forcing sick employees to show up for work because they need the money.
More than 12,000 petition signatures have already been sent to the Denver Elections Division. The proposed measure would require employers in Denver to grant nine days a year of paid sick time to full-time employees. Businesses with fewer than 10 workers would need to provide five days of sick leave. Read On

Community Band Seeking New Members (Edgewater/Lakewood)
|
Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment, to join us for rehearsals on Thursday nights in Edgewater (just west of Denver).
Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at Jefferson High School in Edgewater for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

Fox Renard 240 (short bore) $6000. Purchased new from Fox in 1995.
Mechanism: 18% nickel silver keys with silver plating. Full German system with High D and E keys. Ring key for wing joint third finger hole. Right hand whisper lock. Rollers on F, Ab, Eb, Db, right thumb Bb and F#, in combination with a crowned E key. Bb Guard. Metal tubes extending into the bore in the finger holes of the wing and boot joints to prevent water from entering the tone holes. All posts are set with epoxy and spring posts are locked with screws.
Body: Red Maple, selected for tone quality, naturally aged in our own facilities. Natural rubber linings in the wing joint and small bore of the boot joint. French bell (metal ring). Body Lock. Complete re-pad and service done by Fox summer 2010. Accessories:Fine plush-lined case (original).

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
