Happy Independence Day!
|
Dave Johnson writes for the Campaign for America's Future and adapted this post for the AFL-CIO.
Our country was born out of a fight to cast off colonial rule by a wealthy elite and govern ourselves as We, the People. This fight continues, and nothing more clearly represents this American effort to lift each other up than organized labor. On July 4, as we celebrate our independence I encourage people to recognize our ongoing battle by buying Made in USA goods, and by working for democracy and the rights of workers everywhere. Kolacny Music - Over 80 Years of Service to our Community
| By Pete Vriesenga
Richard Kolacny, who joined the DMA in 1947, recently called the office to pay his annual dues. I was privileged to take his call and personally thanked him for 64 years of dedicated support for causes of professional musicians.
Our conversation touched on anti-labor legislation that was making national headlines in Wisconsin and Ohio. Richard and I share the time-tested, contrasting view; that small businesses, industry professionals and trade unions build strong partnerships because they're naturally dependent on each other. There is no better example than a local music store, with its deep community roots and established relationships with professional
 | L-R: Richard Kolacny, David Kolacny, William Kolacny & Jim Romaine - circa 1978 at 1900 S. Broadway, Denver, CO | musicians and music educators.
Kolacny Music established the 1st professional drum shop in Denver and maintains its long tradition of offering full service repair on brass, woodwinds, strings and harp. Richard's son, David Kolacny, is one of the finest harp technicians in the region. The Yamaha Music School, in partnership with Kolacny Music during the '60's, enrolled as many as 600 students through a 3-year program. Kolacny was also a sponsor of the Denver's Sister Cities partnership with Takayama, Japan.
In this spirit of community, Kolacny Music has also provided us with a central networking and meeting location. Richard's father Bill (William Kolacny) started the business in 1930 at 15th & Stout in downtown Denver. Ed Blackburn (cornet) and Alex Horst (bass) were among Kolacny's first private instructors. The store quickly became a place where all music professionals, teachers & students, would network and hang together. National and touring musicians such as Charlie Teagarden routinely stopped by the store in those days to visit with Bill and any number of local players who happened by.
Sixty, seventy and eighty years later, Kolacny Music remains a known destination that has opened its doors to such greats as Stanley Turrentine, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and Eddie Harris. Members of the Harry Connick Big Band and Wynton Marsalis' Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra also know they can count on Kolacny Music for supplies or a critical repair.
As president of Kolacny Music, a family-owned business since 1930, Richard Kolacny's dedicated support to our local community shines bigger than life. I join many thousands of music professionals in thanking the Kolacny family for more than 80 years of service to our community. How many lifetime friendships and associations have been forged over this time, and how do we put a price on that?

Bylaw modifications approved at 6/27 Membership Meeting
| Thanks to all who attended our June 27 General Membership Meeting. A quorum of 22 members attended.
The meeting Agenda proposed proposed two bylaw changes. The first was largely a housekeeping issue, but nonetheless an important matter that assigns the primary responsibility of signing all checks to the Secretary-Treasurer. The President will now co-sign when the amount exceeds $300.
The second matter of business was to establish a Do Not Work For list, which was proposed as necessary leverage to counter continued loss of work from publicly-funded community organizations that don't pay their performers. Violations of DMA's Policy on Community Orchestras will now be grounds for placement on this list. DMA members cannot accept any engagements from organizations who are placed on this list until the violation(s) have been remedied. First Presbyterian Church of Boulder and the Boulder Symphony Orchestra are possible candidates for this list. DMA is hoping to find a remedy in the coming weeks that will hopefully avoid this action.
Members present voted on both proposals by secret ballot. The proposal for the Secretary-Treasurer to become the primary signer of all checks passed unanimously. The proposal to establish a Do Not Work For list passed 20 to 2.
You can access a copy of these revisions as they are now stated in the bylaws by clicking on the following link: DMA Bylaws, Rev 6/27/2011 |
Philadelphia Orchestra says it can't touch endowment for pensions, but musicians demand proof
|
June 28, 2011|By Peter Dobrin, Inquirer Music Critic
Will the Philadelphia Orchestra Association be permitted to end its participation in the current musicians' pension plan? And if so, will the association be compelled to tap its $120 million endowment to satisfy the estimated $23 million cost of withdrawing from the pension fund?
In connection with its April 16 bankruptcy petition, the orchestra association has claimed that the $120 million endowment cannot be touched. The principal was designated by donors to remain unspent, the association contends.
A motion filed Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court by the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) essentially says: Prove it. Read On

California Philharmonic summer series moving to Santa Anita race track
|
 June 26, 2011 - Los Angeles Times
The California Philharmonic has announced that its audience won't have far to go to find its new summer home after its impending ouster from its longtime outdoor digs at the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia. It'll shuffle on down the road to the Santa Anita Park horse-racing track, also in Arcadia, for a five-concert 2012 summer season, with performances every other Saturday night starting June 30, 2012.
The concerts will take place on the race track's grass infield under the same series moniker it has now: Festival on the Green. The move follows arboretum officials' recent decision to substitute the Pasadena Pops for the Cal Phil as the county-owned site's orchestral attraction starting next summer. Read On

The Denver Municipal Band, 7/3 & 7/4
|
The Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.
The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Surviving the ordeal, he settled in Denver where he was active in many of the city's early musical activities. Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band, it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and 80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

DMA 2011-12 Wage Scales & Mileage Rates
|
|
For over 100 years, DMA wage scales have established minimum acceptable compensation for defined services. These rates are established by the membership. Additionally, all scales are adjusted annually by the Colorado Cost of Living Index, effective September 1st (for contracts filed after September 1) of the current year. Any disputes that arise over the terms of this Schedule of Wages shall be adjudicated by the Denver Musicians Association Board of Directors. Whenever feasible, the Board of Directors may negotiate an agreement with prospective employers for contributions to the AFM-EP pension fund on behalf of the employed musicians. The IRS has also announced that mileage deduction will increase to .55 per mile. This rate, effective July 1, is now reflected in our scales for drivers, along with a .33 per mile rate for passengers. Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/11-15
| The 17th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 11-15, 2011, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 15, 1-5:00 pm. The 2011 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Tully Hall, and James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 10% reduction in tuition.
The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/337/aug19_2/a884.
For more information about the Course and the Alexander Technique in general, please consult the following web site: (http://spot.colorado.edu/~brody/alextechbasicinfo.html) or contact DMA member James Brody (brody@colorado.edu).

Is Your Boss a Jerk?
| Working people have had some pretty bad bosses. How bad? Terrible. Steal-your-bag-lunch-and-lie-about-it terrible. Make-you-move-the-office-furniture-around-every-week-because-she-doesn't-like-things-to-stay-the-same terrible.
Do you have a bad boss story? We want to hear it: [ http://www.workingamerica.org/badboss/?appState=enterstory ].
We know about the bad bosses mentioned above and hundreds more because working people told Working America, the AFL-CIO's community affiliate, about them in previous Bad Boss contests. Now it's time for the 2011 Bad Boss contest, and we want to hear your story. Whether it's hilarious or heart-wrenching, tell us about the worst boss you ever had, past or present.
Take it as a chance to vent or to expose the kinds of things that go on in American workplaces--and you may get what you really deserve. Three people's stories will earn them a much-deserved vacation from their bad bosses. Union Plus provides AFL-CIO union members with benefits like discounts on health care, entertainment and cell phone service. Together with Trading Places International, Union Privilege has provided three amazing grand prize packages. Each of the three grand prize winners will get a seven-night free stay at a condo of their choice in one of many fabulous locations. They'll also get $1,000 for airfare and other travel expenses. * People's Choice Grand Prize Winner: Anyone can vote on the Bad Boss stories, and the story that gets the most votes wins one of our grand prizes. * Staff Pick Grand Prize Winner: The Working America staff will pick one standout story as a grand prize winner. * Most Shared Online Story Grand Prize Winner: The story that is shared most often using the Bad Boss website Facebook sharing tool wins the final grand prize.
Chances are you can't talk back to your bad boss in person. But you can tell the world about your experience, and maybe win a weeklong getaway to boot. Click here to share your story now: [ http://www.workingamerica.org/badboss/?appState=enterstory ].
In solidarity,
Manny Herrmann Online Mobilization Coordinator, AFL-CIO

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
