In Memory - John Zink
|
John Willard Zink, 70 of Littleton CO left us on 05/26. John is survived by his wife Karen J.; 3 sons: John Jeffrey (Mary), Eric C. (Melinda), and Davin K.; 6 grandchildren: Hazel, Julian, Annika, Freya, Carl and Torstein.
Born in Flagler CO and raised in Denver, he attended Thatcher Elementary, Grant Jr. High and South High. He started playing drums early and while in Jr. high he took lessons from Steve Halpin. By the age of 16 he was working in bars and strip clubs downtown.
John attended Denver University where he met Karen in the band. Sometime in the early 60's John toured for a summer with the Ralph Marterie Band, but he knew that work in a touring band was not right for him. He graduated from DU with a degree in Math.
After a year and a half working as a civilian for the Air Force in Alamogordo, NM John returned to Denver in 1965. He and worked as a computer systems analyst for over 35 years mostly for Marathon Oil. He also resumed his drumming career and for the next 45 years he worked all over the Denver area with swing bands, dance bands, and smaller combos. He always enjoyed hanging out with the real musicians.
We will always remember him as a funny, curious, interesting and caring spouse, father, grandfather and friend. John was proud of his and his sons' families. Karen plays flute, Jeffrey plays viola and guitar, Eric plays trombone, and Davin plays bassoon and sax. The band plays on.
Instead of services, we will have an open house on Sat. 06/04 from 3-5 at his home in Littleton. A small group including John's friends Dallas Matthews and Ron Phillips will play. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the financial aid funds at Denver University, St Olaf College(MN), or Carleton College(MN). John always loved stories, our family would appreciate any stories about John you could tell us. Send to zinkkj@earthlink.com

Survival Strategies for Orchestras
|
 | The Louisville Orchestra (seen here in 1950, led by Robert Whitney, left foreground) revived its fortunes by commissioning new works in the 1950s. |
By Vivien Schweitzer
Published: May 25, 2011
NY Times
"Music Makes a City," an engaging documentary from last year about the Louisville Orchestra that was just released on DVD, offers an inspiring and cautionary tale of creative chutzpah and financial mismanagement. The orchestra, which itself filed for bankruptcy in December, was founded shortly after the floods that crippled Louisville, Ky., in 1937.
It began as a ragtag ensemble that rehearsed, according to the film, "in a gloomy room that smelled of stale beer." A young conductor, Robert Whitney, quickly drummed the ensemble into shape, but financial problems loomed from the start. Charles Farnsley, the mayor of Louisville from 1948 to 1953, suggested that the orchestra, instead of spending money on glamorous soloists, commission new pieces: a policy that the board, though initially shocked, adopted. The endeavor was facilitated in 1953 by a $400,000 grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to commission and record 52 compositions a year for three years. The DVD features lively interviews with some of the composers chosen, including Elliott Carter. Read On

Little Room for Compromise in Orchestra Contract Talks
|
WFPL News
June 1, 2011
The Louisville Orchestra's contract with its musicians expired at midnight Wednesday. That means the players are not being paid, they do not have insurance and do not have any guarantee they'll have jobs when the next season starts. There's hope for a new contract, but amid contentious negotiations and ongoing bankruptcy proceedings, that hope is diminishing.
Talks for a new contract began last July. When they broke down, the orchestra filed for Chapter 11. Negotiations picked up again earlier this year as the end of the contract loomed, and orchestra management has put forward what CEO Rob Birman calls the last, best and final offer.

SOUTHERN JOURNEY: TRIBUTE TO ALAN LOMAX
Sponsored by Xcel Energy
Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18 at 7 pm
Crossroads Theatre, 2590 Washington Street, Denver 80205
Southern Journey is inspired by musicologist Alan Lomax's Southern Journey, a thirteen volume series of original field and studio recordings capturing the musical world of the rural South.
Experience the deep river of melody and emotion that washed the sorrow from the souls of the millions pioneering who made America strong and free -- a deep river of song that caught up the best tunes from every hand and linked them with the stubborn convictions and the most poignant longings of all the people. Southern Journey brings to life the Lomax archives with compelling authenticity, exuberance and soulfulness. If you enjoyed the film 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou', if you've been moved by African American spirituals, or been touched by the music of Leadbelly, Robert Johnson or Woody Guthrie, Southern Journey is a must-experience!
Tickets $18 Adults, $15 Students & Seniors
"This was really wonderful--great to have such a large group of musicians on stage presenting this heartfelt and soulful music in such an intimate and warm setting. The intention to share and honor the background and cultural origins of the songs was beyond entertainment as per usual." ---Carah Wertheimer
"Terrific soloists and ensemble! I loved the selection of tunes--a balance of joy, sorrow, pain and beauty. It is a particularly timely experience of authentic American folk music reflecting, speaking, singing, lamenting...the music speaks for us in these times, a reminder of those who got through it before and a salve for our own struggles--thank you!"---Susan Berman

Targeting: Improvisation with Purpose - Book release by Jason Klobnak

TARGETING: IMPROVISATION WITH PURPOSE
Book Release by [DMA Member] Jason Klobnak
DENVER, COLORADO - May 23rd, 2011: Today marks the official release of a new music improvisation book, TARGETING: Improvisation With Purpose, by jazz musician, Jason Klobnak.
The book is available for sale as an E-book for $12.00 and a printed/bound book for $16.50.
TARGETING: Improvisation With Purpose can be purchased at http://jasonklobnak.digitalcontentcenter.com or at
http://jasonklobnak.wordpress.com
The focus of TARGETING: Improvisation With Purpose is to show the many different ways to creatively target notes in improvisations. The aspiring musician should have as many tools in their belt to use at any moment for a given musical situation. However, many improvisers wander aimlessly throughout their improvisations because they are not aiming at a specific target. Each chapter will look at targeting with common musical devices to help create a more effectiveimprovisation.
TARGETING: Improvisation With Purpose can be purchased through these websites:

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/11-15
| The 17th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 11-15, 2011, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 15, 1-5:00 pm. The 2011 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Tully Hall, and James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 10% reduction in tuition.
The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/337/aug19_2/a884.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
