DMA Forum for Denver Mayoral Candidates
|
Denver Mayoral Candidates Michael Hancock and Chris Romer have both stated their support for issues of professional musicians. For this reason the DMA has refrained from making any endorsement in this race. Appropriately, we have invited both candidates to speak directly to you.
Our first letter comes from Chris Romer. The next bulletin will include a statement from Michael Hancock.

Chris Romer - letter to DMA members
|
Members of the Denver Musicians Association:
I'm writing to ask for your support and vote in my campaign for
| Chris Romer | Mayor of Denver.
Professional musicians should know that I'm a strong supporter of a vibrant arts and cultural community. I also recognize that commercial and nonprofit music industries are invaluable assets that provide considerable economic impact. DMA members are responsible for creating this economy, so it's only fitting that this same economy must provide and grow employment opportunities for professional musicians. If elected Mayor, I can assure you that a strong partnership between the City of Denver, the Arts and related music industries will continue and grow.
The Scientific & Cultural Facilities District is a unique and vivid example of our community's ongoing commitment to Arts & Science. However, in my discussions with DMA President Pete Vriesenga, I've now learned about non-competitive practices that have become too common and accepted in Tier III. I'm hearing of disregard for prevailing wage standards and examples where established employment relationships have been lost to SCFD-funded organizations that expect their musicians/artists to volunteer or even "pay to play" for this same work. Voters were told of SCFD's commitment to quality and assurance of fair competition.
My commitment to you comes as a strong supporter of Labor and the AFL-CIO. I am proud to have the endorsement of the Denver Area Labor Federation, and will continue to do all I can to raise wage standards for working families throughout our community. Thank you for recognizing my commitment to you.
Sincerely,
Chris Romer

Broadway Union Takes On 'Priscilla' Over Music
|
By PATRICK HEALY
Published: May 15, 2011
| Tino Gagliardi, president of AFM Local 802 |
In a bid to protect jobs, the Broadway musicians' union is waging an unusually aggressive, political-style campaign against the new musical "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" in hopes of undercutting the use of recorded music during live theatrical performances.
Still bruised over losing some guaranteed seats in orchestra pits during their 2003 contract negotiations with Broadway producers, leaders of Local 802 of the
American Federation of Musicians
have chosen to make an example of "
Priscilla
" by objecting to its employment of only nine musicians and use of some taped music. Union officials and the Broadway League, which represents producers, have chosen an arbitrator to consider the musicians' complaint and are awaiting a date for the first meeting.

Calm Demeanor, Assertive Sounds By NATE CHINEN NY Times - Published: May 9, 2011 |
Shane Endsley performing at the Cornelia Street Cafe
|
The trumpeter Shane Endsley exudes a calm, steadying demeanor on the bandstand, and his tone, dry and matte, falls a long way from brassy effulgence. He's an interior and economical soloist, averse not only to empty flash but also to wasted effort. And yet his music doesn't come across as rigid, cold or self-effacing. Quite the opposite, actually. At Cornelia Street Café on Wednesday night he led a quartet almost identical to the one on "Then the Other," his appealing new album on the Low Electrical label. The pianist was Craig Taborn, and the bassist was Matt Brewer. The lone substitute was Nate Wood, the drummer. (On the album it's Ted Poor.) Mr. Endsley calls this group the Music Band, as if to forestall any attempt to apply the rules of a specific style or genre. Read On

Honolulu Symphony revived, new season planned for fall
|
Reported by: Manolo Morales KHON-2 A deal has been reached to bring back the symphony in Honolulu. The orchestra, which has been silenced due to bankruptcy, could perform its first concert in the fall. The last time the Honolulu Symphony performed was in December 2009. It was a deafening silence for an orchestra that had been around for 110 years. A group called the Symphony Exploratory Committee, recently bought all the assets from the Honolulu Symphony, and announced Tuesday that it's reached a three year agreement with the musicians' union. While these are major steps forward, the committee admits it will still need help to make the new symphony successful. "With your support, with everyone stepping up both in their supporting efforts and also financially we can make this happen," said Vicky Cayetano of the Symphony Exploratory Committee. Read On

SOUTHERN JOURNEY: TRIBUTE TO ALAN LOMAX
Sponsored by Xcel Energy
Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18 at 7 pm
Crossroads Theatre, 2590 Washington Street, Denver 80205
Southern Journey is inspired by musicologist Alan Lomax's Southern Journey, a thirteen volume series of original field and studio recordings capturing the musical world of the rural South.
Experience the deep river of melody and emotion that washed the sorrow from the souls of the millions pioneering who made America strong and free -- a deep river of song that caught up the best tunes from every hand and linked them with the stubborn convictions and the most poignant longings of all the people. Southern Journey brings to life the Lomax archives with compelling authenticity, exuberance and soulfulness. If you enjoyed the film 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou', if you've been moved by African American spirituals, or been touched by the music of Leadbelly, Robert Johnson or Woody Guthrie, Southern Journey is a must-experience!
Tickets $18 Adults, $15 Students & Seniors
"This was really wonderful--great to have such a large group of musicians on stage presenting this heartfelt and soulful music in such an intimate and warm setting. The intention to share and honor the background and cultural origins of the songs was beyond entertainment as per usual." ---Carah Wertheimer
"Terrific soloists and ensemble! I loved the selection of tunes--a balance of joy, sorrow, pain and beauty. It is a particularly timely experience of authentic American folk music reflecting, speaking, singing, lamenting...the music speaks for us in these times, a reminder of those who got through it before and a salve for our own struggles--thank you!"---Susan Berman

On May 10, Mayor Vidal announced the merger between the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs (DOCA) and the City's Division of Theatres and Arenas. The merged group is now known as Arts & Venues Denver, and furthers several core City goals including reduced spending, improved services and always striving to be the best place to live.
Arts & Venues Denver's mission is to enhance Denver's quality of life and economic vitality through premier public venues, artwork and entertainment opportunities. The department looks to maximize synergies between the two departments and will continue to oversee public art, staple programming including Five Points Jazz Festival, Create Denver Week, One Book One Denver, and city permitting; as well as manage venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver Performing Arts Complex, Colorado Convention Center, the historic McNichols Building, the Denver Coliseum and Crossroads Theater.
In March 2011, DOCA Director, Jan Brennan, and Theatres and Arenas Director, Kent Rice, made a presentation on the rationale for the merger and requested the necessary budget rescission and re-appropriation ordinance to combine the budgets of the respective offices.
"Arts & Venues Denver offers many benefits to the City and County of Denver," said Mayor Bill Vidal. "The merger is anticipated to save the City's General Fund $1.2 million per year and it will improve the effectiveness of the cultural services we offer the residents and visitors of Denver who enjoy our world-class venues, arts and free programming."
The departments' goals, programming, combined staff, contact information and ongoing responsibilities will all remain the same. However, the former DOCA staff will move to 1245 Champa Street with the former Theatres and Arenas staff, on Thursday, May 19.
The merged group, Arts & Venues Denver, becomes official Wednesday, June 1.

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/11-15
| The 17th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 11-15, 2011, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 15, 1-5:00 pm. The 2011 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Tully Hall, and James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 10% reduction in tuition.
The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/337/aug19_2/a884.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
