CSO changes its tune and enjoys sound of success
|

The CSO is setting sales records and attracting new attendees. Photo by Todd Rosenberg

The buzz surrounding conductor Jeffrey Kahane's ascension to music director of the Colorado Symphony six years ago took the orchestra to record attendance heights. But when that initial flurry of excitement faded, the symphony was not able sustain the momentum. Ticket sales started on a downward trend, one further aggravated by the recession. But all that ended this season. The orchestra is not just making a financial comeback, it is jetting forward in its still-continuing 2010-11 season, setting sales records and attracting first-time attendees. And it's doing it without two of the tricks that usually give orchestras a boost in visibility and attendance - the appointment of a new music director, as in 2005-06, or the debut of a snazzy new performance venue. SCFD's assurance of "Quality" and "Competitive Grants" - if only it were true
|
By Pete Vriesenga The Scientific & Cultural Facilities District was adopted by Metro-Denver voters in 1988. "Quality" was SCFD's first and foremost committment to voters who were told that eligible organizations must participate in a competitive grant application process. In many respects this committment was set into law with SCFD's statutory requirement of adherence to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Unfortunately, recent forays of the Boulder Symphony (Boulder's 'Pay-to-Play orchestra) have proven once again that SCFD's granting processes are anything but competitive. The Lone Tree Symphony, another SCFD-funded 'pay-to-play' orchestra receives 80% of its budget from the taxpayers. As a national average, government support for symphony orchestras is just 4%. Professional musicians continue to suffer substantial loss of income because of SCFD's non-competitive practices while taxpayer dollars are irresponsibly damaging our economy. In his May 3 letter to me, SCFD board Chair James Harrington defends that SCFD's is creating jobs and meeting its statutory requirements. My May 5 response to Mr. Harrington states my position as I've stated for 15 years ... that none of this is true.
|
Thank you, Seth Hoffman (City of Lone Tree)
|
The April 29 issue of the DMA Bulletin contained a story about the tradition of posting Minutes of the Lone Tree Arts Commission on the City's website. For whatever reason, 15 months of meeting Minutes were missing. Ultimately I notified Mr. Seth Hoffman, City Liaison to the Arts Commission, of problem. Mr. Hoffman had the matter corrected that day. Thank you, Mr. Hoffman Pete Vriesenga, President Denver Musicians Association

New beginning? Or beginning of the end?
|
May 08, 2011|By Peter Dobrin, Inquirer Music Critic The Philadelphia Orchestra's current crucible - its most serious ever - will shift from merely worrisome to outright catastrophic if the following sentiment becomes accepted wisdom: Philadelphia is a great city, and every great city needs an orchestra. It's not that Philadelphia needs an orchestra; it needs this orchestra - the one we have now, the one we've always had, the one that to a wide sampling of world opinion actually defines Philadelphia's greatness. The Philadelphia Orchestra is among the best ensembles anywhere, and if it becomes a lesser version of itself - in terms of its uniquely saturated sound, the quality of individual players, or its artistic drive - it's probably not coming back. A great orchestra is a rare and perishable thing. It takes decades to make, just months to ruin. Read On

Florida doubles its arts funding in state budget
|
By Jay Handelman Published: Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 6:18 p.m. Herald Tribune
While many programs across Florida face drastic state cuts, legislators are poised to double the amount of money spent on arts and culture in the new budget.
The budget agreement reached between the House and Senate, slated for a vote Friday night, calls for $2.1 million in the Cultural and Museum Grants category within the Division of Cultural Affairs.
That is more than twice the $950,000 allocated in the current fiscal year, but still far below the $13.1 million spent in the 2006-07 budget year.
Jim Shirley, executive director of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, said "it's a long way from where it used to be, but it's a step back in the right direction."

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/11-15
| The 17th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 11-15, 2011, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 15, 1-5:00 pm. The 2011 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Tully Hall, and James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 10% reduction in tuition.

The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/337/aug19_2/a884.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
