The Many Faces of SCFD

By Pete Vriesenga

I posted an announcement and commentary on March 22nd entitled: Please attend SCFD's public meeting on March 24, 2011. My hope was to let our community of professional musicians know that our industry is again in jeopardy because of irresponsible decisions of the SCFD board and administrators. Thankfully, many members responded and filled otherwise vacant chairs in the meeting room. Most were members of the Colorado Chamber Orchestra (CCO).

Many Faces

At stake was the fact that SCFD rejected CCO's application to apply for funding in the upcoming grant cycle. Among reasons given: CCO often performs in churches and has played benefit concerts (one for the homeless in Denver and another for AIDS infants in Africa). God forbid if CCO carried through with these good deeds in its past, and what a sad testament of just how silly SCFD policy [or lack thereof] has become.

There is also the fact that almost every other orchestra in town performs exclusively in churches. Homepage photos of the Arapahoe Philharmonic (at South Suburban Church) and Boulder Symphony (First Presbyterian Church) provide just two examples of SCFD's latest double standard. Additionally, the Boulder Symphony's rent agreement with First Presbyterian has their musicians performing Sunday worship services for free, including First Presbyterian's annual performances of the Glory of Christmas. According to BSO's own press release, this is "a musical event of worship and praise celebrating the birth of Christ" that is in fact a "benefit for the Glory Community."

SCFD officials also expressed concern that CCO's outreach programs in Douglas County potentially benefit some students who reside in Douglas County, but happen to live in specific areas that don't pay into the SCFD District. At the conclusion of the March 24 meeting I reminded the SCFD board that this was yet another, serious double standard. I pointed to SCFD's " FREE Holiday Performance Opportunity at the Park Meadows Mall" that was staged in 2003 and 2004. Prior to a the passing of a 2004 Election Referendum, Park Meadows Mall was similarly situated in a non-SCFD tax area. The difference between then and now is that SCFD staged the event and used public resources for the political goal of luring the Mall into the District in advance of the election.

Shame on the SCFD board, not only for their ongoing hypocrisy, but for allowing students to become victims of SCFD/Douglas County politics.

Bullying the SCFD?

By Pete Vriesenga

I have been calling attention to SCFD's bad policy for 15 years, all the while explaining why their indiscriminate annual distribution of $40 million is doing more harm than good. For the most part this has been a futile effort because we are now facing a culture shift in our community Gig Awaythat, driven by ignorance, deliberate intent or both, is systematically killing jobs by converting our remaining professional music economy into publicly-funded volunteerism.

How do we wake our "leaders" to the simple fact that these precious tax dollars must work in harmony with our industry and to  ensure that taxpayers finally get what they bargained for? Pointed, healthy discussion going forward is our best hope, provided we can find someone willing to represent the alternate point of view. Robin McNeil has now stepped into this role, at least for the moment. McNeil is a former Executive Director of the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra and now maintains  his OpusColorado arts blog.

My recent commentary Please attend SCFD's public meeting on March 24, 2011 caught McNeil's attention. On March 26, McNeil posted his commentary to mine which he titled Bullying the SCFD. McNeil tosses out weak and unfounded assertions that, at the very least, require my counter back to him. But despite repeated attempts to post my response to his blog, McNeil has deliberately silenced me ... for now.

Detroit Symphony Orchestra Members Return to Work

April 12, 2011

The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) is pleased to announce that the musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) returned to work last Thursday, rehearsing in Orchestra Hall in preparation for two free concerts this past weekend. The rehearsal and concerts were scheduled after DSO musicians and management reached a tentative contract settlement Sunday, April 3. The contract was ratified Friday, April 8, ending the six-month strike.

"After six long months, I am overjoyed to see the DSO musicians return to making beautiful music at their home, Orchestra Hall," adds AFM President Ray Hair. "Their perseverance in standing up for their value in the community, and for the value of their orchestra, is something to be admired. The actions of the DSO musicians will be remembered for years to come."

After weeks of stalling on face-to-face negotiations, DSO management finally agreed to schedule negotiating sessions the first weekend of April. Bargaining talks stretched for 17 hours on April 2 and 10 hours on April 3, culminating in a deal that the musicians' negotiating committee brought back to the full orchestra for a vote. The approved three-year contract totals $36.3 million.

"We want to thank the thousands of people from all over the city, the nation, and indeed the world who supported us with their letters, emails, and in many cases, their money," says AFM Local 5 (Detroit, MI) President Gordon Stump. "For the sake of those people, ourselves, and the thousands of classical musicians working in symphony, opera, and ballet orchestras throughout the country, we are happy that the worst of the proposals were eliminated. We paid a heavy price in terms of the loss of income over the last six months and an almost 25% reduction in our salaries, but we were able to fend off management proposals which would have significantly changed the very nature of the job, and would have given the managements of other orchestras the impetus to try and gain those conditions in their orchestras."

Musicians worldwide protest against Roberto Minczuk's decision to re-audition OSB musicians

Letters of protest from orchestra musicians and managers all over the world are being sent every day to the President (Eleazar de Carvalho) and the Musical Director (Roberto Minczuk) of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), after the management announced its decision to re-audition all musicians of the orchestra.

Reprobation is unanimous and calls for dialogue have been expressed so as to ensure that the future of the OSB be prepared through an inclusive partnership in governance.

The procedure envisaged by the OSB management is described everywhere as unfair and counterproductive.

You can use FIM's protest below as a model if you wish to add your voice to this campaign.

Englewood Arts Presents, 4/23

Date: Saturday, April 23, 2011Mozart Serenade

Time: 2:00 pm

ENGLEWOOD ARTS PRESENTS continues its Chamber Music of the Masters series with a performance of Mozart's Serenade No. 10 for winds in B-flat major, K. 361/370a.

The Serenade, known sometimes as the 'Gran Partita' from a later, misspelt addition to the title-page of the autograph, seems to have been written sometime between 1781 and 1784.  Accounts vary and are inconclusive.

Most serenades in Mozart's time were meant as eighteenth-century background 'Muzak,' for engagement and garden parties, weddings, dinners, and other festive occasions.  The Gran Partita is different ~ a vast and glorious work, filled with emotion and intense beauty which falls into the category of real concert music.

The serenade is scored for two oboes, two clarinets, two basset-horns, four horns, two bassoons and double-bass and is in seven movements.

Working Professional Dance Band Seeks Keyboard Player/Lead Singer (Male)

We are:

  • A well known, established professional dance band that has been playing for over 10 years. We play primarily weddings, corporate events, summer festivals and private parties.
  • Based in Denver and practice 1/x week
  • 5 members who all sing (lead guitar/drums/bass/keys with a lead female singer) We work with a full time sound man and a sax player for many of our shows
  • The music is a variety of Classic Rock, Top 40, Motown, Soul, Blues, Country Rock and Jazz
  • We all have day jobs but have flexible schedules that allow for a few out of state gigs & weekday festivals during the summer.
  • We keep very busy with about 40-50 shows per year. Excellent money.
  • We are independently managed. We have a business manager who handles the bookings, promotion, our web site and marketing

    What we hope to find:
  • An experienced keyboard player who can also cover the lead male singer role. Must have an ear for harmonies.  All of us sing and 3 part harmony is vital to this band.
  • Strong, dynamic tenor voice with power and range. This is a key role in the band and we are looking for great stage presence.
  • Must have prior stage experience and must come to the table with a wide repertoire of songs that most variety dance bands cover from the 60's to today's hits.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new songs that have been requested from clients
Someone who will make a commitment to this band.  Not looking for a hired gun.  None of the current musicians play in other bands, which we believe, contributes to our tight sound.

Please have MP3 files or You Tube Videos and a bio. Please list the bands you have been in. We are starting our busy season now and our schedule is such that we would like to see/hear you first. This is an excellent opportunity for the right person who is willing to dedicate himself to making great music, making some great money and having fun. Please respond to band@indra.com

Arts Funding Spared Drastic Cuts

Congress and the President have finally reached a deal to fund the government through the end of FY2011, avoiding a government shutdown when the latest short-term continuing resolution expired on April 8. Although the budget deal implements an addition $38 billion in cuts, AFM is relieved to see that arts funding was not impacted as severely as expected:

The National Endowment for the Arts will be funded at $155 million, which represents a 7% cut from its FY10 appropriation of $167.5 million. The Arts in Education program, which had been eliminated in the short-term spending bills, was restored as part of the Fund for Improvement of Education and is expected to receive an appropriation of $25 million. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which is appropriated two years in advance, will receive $430 million for FY11, and then $445 million for FY12 and FY13. Provisions to defund health care reform and to block the FCC from implementing net neutrality rules were both eliminated from the final bill.

Thank you for all of your efforts in support of arts funding! AFM members sent over 3,000 emails to Members of Congress via our advocacy campaigns.

Equal Pay Day--No Cause for Celebration

April 12, 2011

Today is Equal Pay Day--the day that symbolizes how far into each year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. Working women in the United States are paid an average of 80 cents for every dollar paid to men. The pay gap is even larger for women of color, with black women earning about 70 cents, and Latinas about 60 cents, of every dollar paid to all men.

Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.

We meet Thursday evenings at Jefferson High School in Edgewater for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

Feel free to drop by and check us out at 7 p.m. on Thursdays, or check out milehighcommunityband.net for more information. E-mail mjlucas@aol.com if you have other questions!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
