April 4th Rally and Candlelight Vigil

Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn., where he was standing with sanitation workers demanding their dream of a better life. Today, the right to bargain collectively for a voice at work and a middle-class life are under attack as never before.

People across America-black, white, Latino and Asian American-are electrified by that same dream and are standing up for the right to join together for our common dreams. A series of labor events in Denver will culminate in a Candlelight Vigil at the Denver City We Are OnePark from 5:30 - 7:30 pm at the City Park, Bandshell Facility East 17th Ave and Steele St.

Featuring: AFM 760's Mario Solis-Marich, Nita Gonzales, Alan Gilbert, Andrea Merida, Henry Roman, Jeff Englehart, and many more

The Syracuse Symphony Orchestra's board of trustees voted Tuesday to suspend operations as of Sunday because of a shortage of funds.

The decision will bring the 50th anniversary season of the orchestra to an unceremonious end. There were more than 20 Syracuse and regional concerts remaining in the 2010-11 season.

Dear fans and friends of the Mountain Music Duo,
"Ben & I play for peace - DENVER" is THIS SUNDAY, April 3 at 3 PM!

Ben Werdegar is a 13-year-old guitar prodigy who has pledged to raise $1 million in partnership with CNN hero Brad Blauser to purchase wheelchairs for disabled children in Iraq.

LET'S HELP HIM MEET HIS GOAL!

This Sunday, Ben will play a concert for peace to benefit Wheelchairs for Iraqi Kids in Austin, Texas. Attend a special "sister city" concert at the same date and time, but here in Denver! Colorado Chamber Orchestra, 4/3

The Littleton UMC Chancel Choir and soloists will be joined by award-winning actor David Ambroson, the Littleton Dance Academy and the Colorado Chamber Orchestra for a rare performance of the 20th-century masterwork by composer Arthur Honegger, King David.

One of the most popular oratorios in the repertoire, King David recounts the entire story of David's life from triumphs and struggles, to final reconciliation.   As a narrator tells the life story of David, dramatic musical vignettes charge the tale with all the elements of great tragedy, until the work ends with the prophecy of the Messiah.

Soloists in order of appearance:  boy soprano Charlie Brandt (David), tenor Tim Zimmer (David), soprano Theresa Derr, mezzo soprano Janice Gulick (Witch of Endor), contralto Arlene Chenoweth, soprano Debbie Pierce (angel), and contralto Kelly Kates (Bathsheba).  A troupe from the Littleton Dance Academy, under the direction of Alison Jamarillo, will add visual beauty and energy to the famous "Dance Before the Ark."

Do not miss this moving finale to the Fine Arts Series season.

Englewood Arts Presents: EXTASIS TANGO, 4/9

Saturday, April 9, 2011, 2:00 pm

Englewood Arts Presents welcomes the return of EXTASIS TANGO, the Denver-based tango ensemble formed in 1997.  Founding members were cellist Evan Orman and violinist Erin Furbee, both who shared an interest in the popular music of Argentina, especially that of Astor Piazzolla.  Since then, various incarnations of the group emerged, including a variety of musicians and instrumental combinations that have led to the present configuration of a quartet consisting of violin, bandoneón, piano and bass ~ a classic orquesta tipica.  In 1999, Erin and Evan received a grant from Tango Colorado, which allowed them to study this music first hand in Buenos Aires.

 Extasis Tango

Extasis released its first CD in 2009 and has recently performed at Dazzle Restaurant Lounge, the Strings Music Festival Winter Series in Steamboat Springs, and most recently with the Columbus (Georgia) Symphony Orchestra.

Arts Funding in Jeopardy

Congress is getting closer to passing a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the federal government for the remainder of fiscal year 2011. The current CR expires on April 8th, and a new bill must be passed by that date to avoid a government shutdown.

Many programs that impact musicians are currently in jeopardy, including:

The Arts in Education program, which provides grants to schools and community to improve arts education. This program received $40 million in FY2010 and has already been eliminated from the short-term CRs and the House-passed Budget Resolution (H.R. 1). The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), which provides essential support to performing artists, symphony orchestras, and theaters all across the country. This program would see a 26% cut from the FY2010 appropriation of $167.5 million if the House Budget Resolution is agreed to by the Senate. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which provides funding for public radio and television stations across the country. The House Budget Resolution call for a rescission of unused funds for this year, a reduction of $86 million in CPB's appropriation for FY2012, and elimination of all public broadcasting funding for FY2013.

Many thanks to those of you who have responded to previous calls to action on arts funding. Your support does make a difference. Recently, I have met with two conservative Democrats, Rep. Collin Peterson (MN) and Rep. Jim Cooper (TN), who agreed to oppose these cuts. They understand that these programs, totaling 0.02% of annual federal expenditures, have an infinitesimal impact on the deficit. If Congress is serious about deficit reduction, they should consider the budget impact of the three wars we are currently fighting before making any cuts to the arts.

It is critical that Members of Congress hear from you on these issues. If you have not already done so, follow the link below to send an email to your representative and senator in support of arts funding.

Maine Gov. Erases Labor History

March 24, 2011

In one of the most petty acts in the recent wave of anti-worker attacks from Republican governors and legislatures, Maine Gov. Paul LePage has ordered the removal of a 36-foot mural depicting the state's labor history from the Department of Labor. On top of that, he is removing the names of renowned labor leaders from the department's conference rooms because both the mural and room names "go against the department's pro-business goals."

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
