Second Semester - A local rookie college instructor gets a do-over

By DMA member Jennie Dorris

Published in 5280 Magazine, January 2011

Here's a secret: Most first-time college instructors, like their students, can't wait for finals to be done. I know this because my first semester teaching at a local community college this fall was a frantic haze of creating lesson plans, grading papers, and writing lectures. There were late-night phone calls with other profs to lament painful night classes, and e-mail exchanges revealing our students' funniest test answers (Question: Listen to Purcell's "Dido's Lament." What is Dido lamenting? Answer: Baroque opera.) There was only one thing helping me get through: I would get a redo starting this month, when the second semester begins, with a brand new batch of students-and a chance to correct my mistakes.

Originally, my idea of professorship was based on conventional wisdom-even cliches. I shopped for "teacher clothes" and bought my first blazer, which rolled up casually at the sleeves. I was convinced I would not have to discipline my college students, unlike the rambunctious elementary and high school students I had taught in the past. I thought teaching music classes would make me the "fun" professor; we'd listen to jazz and chat about Count Basie's delicate, articulate piano sound. Even if my students didn't love my class, they were paying tuition so they'd come to class prepared, right?

Wrong. Two months in, I gave an open-book, open-note online quiz that was ignored by two-thirds of my class.

A Second Chance for the Honolulu Symphony?

Monday, March 14, 2011
By Tiffany Hill
Honolulu Magazine

If all goes according to plan, the 64-member orchestra will once again take the stage of the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall this summer as the newly revamped Honolulu Symphony. Less than six months ago, the former Honolulu Symphony Society lowered the curtain on its 110-year history, after engaging in an emotional year-long Chapter 11 bankruptcy that morphed into a last-minute Chapter 7 liquidation.

Enter the Symphony Exploratory Committee. Led by Oswald Stender, an Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee and former symphony fundraiser, the committee recently became a 501(c)3. It comprises influential business people, including Paul Kosasa, president of ABC Stores, Vicky Cayetano, president of the United Laundry Service Inc. and attorney Ken Robbins, among others.

"We're putting together a financial model and business plan," says Stender. "We hope to have it in place in a couple of weeks and then we'll go public and launch a campaign [to raise awareness and fundraise]."

You can't have a symphony without instruments or sheet music, and the committee has a plan for that too-it is set to buy the former symphony's holdings as a whole. Last Tuesday, March 8, Richard Yanagi, the Chapter 7 trustee for the symphonic organization's assets, agreed to sell everything to the fledgling group for $231,000. Assets include the symphony name itself, the former donor list, the entire music library, some office equipment and instruments, including two grand pianos, one harp, four snare drums, six Chinese gongs and two pairs of kalaau sticks.

Although it looks likely that the Symphony Exploratory Committee will end up with the assets to rebuild the symphony-no one else has expressed serious interest-they've still got to go through the motions of an open auction. Per bankruptcy proceedings, an auction will take place this Thursday, March 17 at 10 a.m. in a Waikïkï Resort Hotel ballroom, conducted by Heritage Global Partners (of which will receive $21,000 of the agreed $231,000 for holding the auction).

"We're very hopeful," says Stender, adding that each member of the committee is spending personal money to purchase the assets. The bankruptcy court still has to approve the final sale, but Yanagi doesn't foresee any obstacles.

"It's an excellent group of people," says Jonathan Parrish, the musicians union spokesperson and a French horn player with the former Honolulu Symphony. "The community needs to support this effort. A community without an orchestra is a community without a soul."

LABOR & POLITICS

Walker Backlash Boosts Working America and Union Support

by Mike Hall, Mar 16, 2011

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's (R) attack on workers' rights and middle-class jobs is having what is surely an unintended effect, as far as he is concerned-building support for workers' rights.

Amanda Terkel at The Huffington Post reports today that after Walker zeroed in on workers' collective bargaining rights, more than 20,000 Wisconsinites have joined Working America, the AFL-CIO's community affiliate for people without a union. Also, faculty members at two University of Wisconsin (UW) campuses have voted to join AFT-Wisconsin.

One union leader tells Terkel:

The increase in Working America numbers provides one of the first real-world examples of what we've seen, which is increased interest nationally and in Wisconsin of supporting workers' rights.

Working America organizer Kevin Pape says people continually approached Working America members-easily spotted in their red T-shirts- at the rallies and marches protesting Walker's attacks. He tells Terkel:

People are just thirsty for a connection to a labor movement. This is an avenue to join the labor movement, and they're just jumping at it.

Michigan Workers Face 'Financial Martial Law'

March 16, 2011

Workers in Michigan today will hold a massive rally to protest Gov. Rick Snyder's (R) new "financial martial law" powers that allow him to declare a "financial emergency" in a city or school district and appoint a manager with broad powers. The manager would be able to fire local elected officials and break teachers' and public workers' contracts. The Michigan attack is the latest in the unprecedented and coordinated nationwide assault on workers' rights and middle-class jobs.

Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.

We meet Thursday evenings at Jefferson High School in Edgewater for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

Feel free to drop by and check us out at 7 p.m. on Thursdays, or check out milehighcommunityband.net for more information. E-mail mjlucas@aol.com if you have other questions!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
