Violinist Eugene Fodor dies at age 60

Eugene FodorViolinist Eugene Fodor died Saturday in Fairfax, Va., at the age of 60, after an illness that had started in June, said his sister, Deborah Fodor-Bode.

It is impossible for me to write about the death of Eugene Fodor without personal attachment.

In my very early violin days, a family friend gave me a gift: a cassette recording of Eugene Fodor playing the Tchaikovsky violin concerto. I was nine, and it was the first recording I owned. It was the only classical music recording in the house, and I loved it with abandon. Fodor grew up in Colorado, as did I. He won the 1972 Paganini Competition and received the top prize in the the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1974, just a few years before that recording was made. It was a source of national and local pride that an American - a Coloradan - had won a major Soviet honor, in Moscow, at the height of the Cold War. In fact it was a source of controversy that he was given only the "top prize" and not declared the "winner," sharing the honor with a Russian. A chorus of those present testified that he had indisputably played the best.

People all across Wisconsin are standing up against Gov. Assumption Grotto's Fr. Perrone supports Detroit musicians

Posted by Theodore Harvey to ICSOM's orchestra-l
Sat Mar 5, 2011 11:21 am (PST)

As one who cares deeply about sacred music as well as the secular symphonic music I play for a living, I was pleased to learn that Fr Eduard Perrone, pastor of Detroit's Assumption Grotto Catholic Church which is known for its orchestral masses, will be conducting the Detroit Symphony musicians in a concert tomorrow.  I thought Orchestra-L members might appreciate reading his explanation of his support in his parish newsletter, available to download at this link: http://tedeum.blogspot.com/2011/03/poulenc-organ-concerto-at-kirk-in-hills.html

I think it is fairly rare these days to see a clergyman taking a stand for striking classical musicians like this.  Kudos to Fr Perrone!

Players, facing 20% pay cut, fear a stigma
Philadelphia Inquirer
March 01, 2011|By Peter Dobrin, Inquirer Music Critic

In past contract negotiations at the Philadelphia Orchestra, it has been musicians who have quietly held, or explicitly exercised, the threat of damaging action: a strike.

But in current talks, it is management tolling unprecedented and severe consequences: bankruptcy.

Management has intermittently used the prospect of Chapter 11 in talks during the last few months in its drive to reduce labor costs, people familiar with the talks say.

Players - who could see a 20 percent cut in base pay and the loss of 10 positions - are taking the threat seriously. They would like any eventual deal to include a commitment that management will not seek bankruptcy protection, whose stigma they feel would both damage the orchestra's reputation and dampen fund-raising and ticket sales.

LABOR & POLITICS

Polling Evangelicals: Not Pro-Union, but Split Over Unions Versus Government

A Pew Research Center survey suggests evangelicals have the lowest favorability toward government employee unions of any religious group.   Christianity Today, posted 3/04/2011 11:42AM

Both sides in the public labor stand-off in Wisconsin often wrap their arguments in moral and religious rhetoric. Most Americans, however, may want to avoid bringing up the issue at church. A February poll by Pew Research Center for People and the Press finds that evangelicals are split over fights between state and local governments and public labor unions.

Four in ten evangelicals say that their first reaction is to back labor unions when there is a disagreement between state or local governments and unions. Statistically, this is the same as the percentage who said their gut reaction would be to support governments. The only religious tradition to overwhelmingly support one side or the other is African-American Protestants, who favor labor two-to-one over governments.

Tell Congress to Preserve Arts Funding!

The House of Representatives recently passed H.R. 1, the continuing resolution (CR) that would fund the federal government for the remainder of fiscal year 2011. The CR represents a reduction of $100 billion in spending compared to the President's FY2011 budget request. Many of the cuts adopted by the House would be harmful to musicians, including:

  • Elimination of the Arts in Education program, which received $40 million in FY2010.
  • A $124 million appropriation for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). This represents a 26% cut from the FY2010 appropriation of $167.5 million.
  • Rescission of any unobligated funds to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) for this year, a reduction of $86 million in CPB's appropriation for FY2012, and elimination of all public broadcasting funding for FY2013.
  • A provision that blocks funding for the Federal Communications Commission to institute net neutrality rules.
  • Nine amendments to defund various aspects of the health care reform law passed last year, effectively blocking the administration from carrying out the planned health system overhaul.

We expect the Senate and the President to hold the line on many of these issues, but significant cuts are still possible. Yesterday, Congress passed a short-term CR that will keep the federal government open until March 18th, while negotiations on the full FY11 budget continue. This short-term funding bill, which contains $4 billion in cuts, will likely be the template for future decisions going forward.

Although most of the programs that impact musicians remained intact, the cuts in the short-term bill completely eliminate Arts in Education funding. Unless Congress restores the fund in the full-year FY11 spending bill, it will cause the shutdown of 52 multi-year programs in schools across the country.

AFM is working with other advocacy organizations to prevent these cuts from being enacted. We recently signed onto a letter with the Future of Music Coalition and other arts organizations, asking Congress to preserve funding for public broadcasting. The AFL-CIO, of which AFM is a member, is also lobbying against the dismantling of health care reform.

But we need your help! I ask you, as musicians and lovers of the arts, to advocate for Arts in Education and NEA funding. Click on the link below to send an email to your Representative and Senators urging them to oppose these cuts.

Follow this link to be taken to AFM's action page: http://afl.salsalabs.com/o/5873/c/777/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1626

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
