Management Unmasked

It appears that the DSO Board and management have finally dropped the mask. They never intended to reach a contract agreement with the musicians of the DSO. Instead, their intention is, and has always been, to start over with a new group of musicians working without a union contract. What kind of an orchestra does the Board think they can have with no professional musicians? The Board's and management's misunderstanding of the DSO and its audience goes very deep--they seem to think that DSO subscribers and donors will continue the same level of support for an amateur pickup orchestra that they have given to the proud world-class ensemble that has been built up in Detroit over so many decades. Please send emails expressing your opinion to editor@detroitsymphonymusicians.org. Say, "Please post" and we'll add your message to our website.

DSO: Change tune or be replaced

Players pressured to take tougher deal than they rejected
Lawrence B. Johnson, The Detroit News, Published February 21, 2011.

A very different Detroit Symphony Orchestra could emerge in the coming months unless the DSO musicians reverse themselves and agree to terms even more stringent than the offer they rejected over the weekend.

The DSO administration is prepared to move forward with a newly assembled group of players that would include only those members of the current orchestra who agree to unilaterally presented terms, DSO Vice President Paul Hogle said Sunday.

Without setting a date, Hogle said the time has come for a new symphony model to emerge, an ensemble that not only plays traditional concerts but also fully engages the community as ambassadors, educators and performers.

DSO cellist Haden McKay, shocked by the news that management may simply move on with replacements, said the plan is the equivalent of "an atom bomb."

DSO violinist and musicians' spokesman Joe Goldman said, "What kind of orchestra does (board chairman) Stanley Frankel think he's going to have without any professional musicians in it?"Read On

Some community leaders are looking at a reorganized orchestra

By Steven Mark
Honolulu Star-Advertiser
Feb 24, 2011

A group of prominent business and civic leaders has formed a committee aimed at returning the bankrupt Honolulu Symphony to the concert stage.

Led by Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee Oz Stender, the group, informally named the Symphony Exploratory Committee, has asked Steve Monder, retired president of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and JoAnn Falletta, acclaimed conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, to develop a business model for the symphony. The group also filed for nonprofit status.

Falletta has served as artistic adviser for the symphony and has been a guest conductor here.

"It would be a shame if Hawaii does not have a world-class symphony," Stender said. "We're the crossroads of the Pacific, and culturally we'd be starving if we didn't have a symphony. ... And I think the youth would really suffer."

International Music Score Library Project Raises Copyright Concerns

Free Trove of Music Scores on Web Hits Sensitive Copyright Note
By DANIEL J. WAKIN
NY Times, Published: February 22, 2011

Humanity's musical treasures - Beethoven piano sonatas, Schubert songs, Mozart symphonies and the like - come to life in performance. But they truly survive as black marks on a page, otherwise known as scores. Now a Web site founded five years ago by a conservatory student, then 19 years old, has made a vast expanse of this repertory available, free.

The site, the International Music Score Library Project, has trod in the footsteps of Google Books and Project Gutenberg and grown to be one of the largest sources of scores anywhere. It claims to have 85,000 scores, or parts for nearly 35,000 works, with several thousand being added every month. That is a worrisome pace for traditional music publishers, whose bread and butter comes from renting and selling scores in expensive editions backed by the latest scholarship. More than a business threat, the site has raised messy copyright issues and drawn the ire of established publishers.

SHAME! Wis. Assembly OKs Walker's Jobs Attack

Feb. 25, 2011
Amid shouts of "Shame!" early this morning, the Republican-controlled Wisconsin Assembly unexpectedly cut off debate and quick-marched a vote on Gov. Scott Walker's bill to eliminate the right of public employees to bargain for middle-class jobs. The bill passed 51-17, with 28 lawmakers--all Democrats, three Republicans and an Independent--abstaining in protest. The bill still must pass the state Senate, and Wisconsin workers continue their fight against the bill.

Rally to Save the American Dream, Saturday, Feb 26 in Denver and Cheyenne

In Wisconsin and around our country, the American Dream is under fierce attack. Instead of creating jobs, Republicans are giving tax breaks to corporations and the very rich-and then cutting funding for education, police, emergency response, and vital human services.

On Saturday, February 26, at noon local time, Labor supporters are organizing rallies in front of every statehouse and in every major city to stand in solidarity with the people of Wisconsin. We demand an end to the attacks on worker's rights and public services across the country. We demand investment, to create decent jobs for the millions of people who desperately want to work. And we demand that the rich and powerful pay their fair share.

We are all Wisconsin. We are all Americans.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
