Lawyer's letter kicks off the latest in Louisville Orchestra saga
| Business First - by Ed Green Monday, February 7, 2011
It's not often in media circles that you get a news release or formal statement that makes you stop in your tracks. But that happened today, when I read a statement from a group that I guess I can call "the artists formerly known as the Louisville Orchestra Musicians Association."
Much as the music industry media once referred to "the artist formerly known as Prince" when he was on the outs with his music producer, we might have to refer to the musicians in this way, given the latest twist in the orchestra dispute between the orchestra and its members.
According to the statement from the musicians' organization, it has received a letter from the an attorney telling it to stop using references to Louisville Orchestra in its communications. The "media backgrounder" read as follows:

DSO management, musicians meet
| Feb. 7, 2011 By MARK STRYKER Detroit Free Press
Management and musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra met today to try to hammer out a settlement in the bitter strike that has now entered its 19th week. While a media blackout prevents either side from discussing details, two boardmembers confirmed that negotiations took place but added that they had not been told whether progress had been made or not.The bargaining session comes on the heels of a new formal contract offer made late last week by management, which has requested a response from the musicians by Friday. While management has not characterized the proposal as a "final offer," officials have said the strike, which has caused the cancelation of nearly half the season, has reached a critical juncture. Don't Let Congress Eliminate the Arts
|
|
We need your help.
The new majority in power in the U.S. House of Representatives is taking an axe to the current 2011 federal budget in an attempt to bring it down to levels from three years ago. That alone would cut irreplaceable National Endowment for the Arts funding to state and local nonprofit arts groups by at least $27 million immediately.
However, 175 members of the Republican Study Committee, an independent but powerful arm of the GOP party, are pushing even further by unfairly targeting total elimination of many programs that you and I care about. Elimination of such federal agencies as the National Endowment for the Arts would cripple support for nonprofit arts and culture programs in every city and state across the country. It would no doubt quickly impact the livability and economic vitality in Denver as well.
Help us prevent attacks to disproportionately cut these federal agencies and programs:
- National Endowment for the Arts and for the Humanities, funding arts organizations throughout Colorado
- Arts Education Programs, which fund local model projects through the U.S. Department of Education
- Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds NPR and PBS stations throughout the country and are strong supporters of arts programming
In these next four weeks, the House of Representatives will finalize the 2011 budget. We don't have much time - please donate even as little as $5 to the Arts Action Fund's Campaign to Prevent Elimination of the Arts.

Thank you,
 Nina Ozlu Tunceli Executive Director

Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the
first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in
band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the
flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax
before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25

(i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students
in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance
involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra
members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order
