Louisville Orchestra woes repeat nationwide refrain

Other cities' financial struggles offer lessons here
By Elizabeth Kramer
Louisville Courier-Journal
January 26, 2011

On Monday, the financially beleaguered Louisville Orchestra will again struggle to meet its payroll under a court order, two months after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The orchestra wants to reinvent itself as a much leaner operation - with fewer musicians, fewer work weeks and an annual operating budget that's more than a million dollars smaller.

While financial challenges are nothing new to the Louisville Orchestra, this year it has plenty of company. Orchestras nationwide are feeling the economic pinch.

The Honolulu Symphony went through Chapter 7 bankruptcy and liquidated in 2009, after a 110-year run - mirroring stories in St. Louis, Colorado Springs and San Antonio, among other cities whose orchestras have filed for bankruptcy in the past decade.

In Detroit, musicians have been on strike since October, and holiday performances were canceled after its symphony moved to cut salaries and jobs.

The Indianapolis Symphony ended 2010 with a $2.7 million deficit - the second straight year in which the orchestra lost money - even after musicians agreed to a 12 percent pay cut.

The story is similar in Fort Worth, Texas; Charlotte, N.C.; Albuquerque, N.M.; and Milwaukee, all of which have struggled with some combination of six-figure losses, salary cuts and job reductions, due in part to the combined effects of the recession, lagging ticket sales, slow endowment growth and sluggish fundraising.

Expert: Syracuse Symphony Orchestra's jam is a familiar tune for mid-size

Tuesday, February 01, 2011

By Melinda Johnson

Syracuse Post-Standard

Syracuse, NY -- Arthur C. Brooks knows orchestras. He played French horn in the Barcelona Municipal Orchestra. He wrote his 1998 dissertation on the economies of symphony orchestras, including the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra as a model for surviving financial crises.

He looks at the current crisis facing the SSO, which needs to come up with $375,000 by Friday to meet February payroll and expenses or it will close, and he sees a familiar problem. "The wolf is always at the door financially for midsize orchestras," said Brooks, now president of American Enterprise Institute, a think tank based in Washington, D.C. Brooks is an expert on philanthropy and nonprofits and a former professor at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University.

Our Continued Support of the DSO

After another round of unproductive talks between the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) musicians and management, and the DSO's cancellation of this weekend's concerts, it is clear that the orchestra's struggle is far from over. The DSO Board of Directors agreed to postpone the decision to cancel the remainder of the season and meet again next week. As the strike enters its 18th week, the American Federation of Musicians (AFM)

continues to firmly support the members of the orchestra, and encourages all music lovers to do the same.

Music Industry Braces for the Unthinkable

By ERIC PFANNER Published: January 23, 2011
New York Times

PARIS - After another year of plunging music sales, record company executives are starting to contemplate the unthinkable: The digital music business, held out as the future of the industry, may already be as big as it is going to get.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, a trade group based in London, said last week  that sales of music in digital form had risen only 6 percent worldwide in 2010, even as the overall music market had shrunk 8 percent or 9 percent, extending a decade-long decline.
In each of the past two years, the rate of increase in digital revenue has approximately halved. If that trend continues, digital sales could top out at less than $5 billion this year, about a third of the overall music market but many billions of dollars short of the amount needed to replace long-gone sales of compact discs.
"Music's first digital decade is behind us and what do we have?" said Mark Mulligan, an analyst at Forrester Research. "Not a lot of progress."

CBS Refuses to Air NFL Players Ad

Feb. 1, 2011

CBS has refused to air an ad from the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) because CBS executives say they "didn't want to get involved" in labor negotiations between the union the National Football League (NFL), which has threatened to lock out the players. CBS and other broadcasters pay the NFL $4 billion a year to televise the games and will pay even if the owners lock out the players. That $4 billion is basically lockout insurance, and CBS is pretty darn involved.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
