Roland Jones

Violinist also remembered as a "wonderfully encouraging" teacher

Posted: 01/23/2011 01:00:00 AM MST

RolandJones spent 15 years as a violinist with the Denver - now Colorado -Symphony, but he was better known to hundreds of students as a teacher.

Jones, who had suffered from various illnesses, died Jan. 16 at St. Joseph Hospital. He was 78.

A service for him is planned at 3 p.m. Feb. 5 at Grace United Methodist Church, 4905 E. Yale Ave.

String quartets will play at the service...

...Jones studied music at the JuilliardSchool and Columbia University in New York and earned his degree at theUniversity of Michigan.

He came to Denver in 1960 to play with the Denver Symphony, where he stayed until 1975.

He met Carol Day at a church singles' group, and they married on Sept. 20, 1969. They had no children.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Hannah Chamberlin of Muscatine, Iowa.

Tiny Tots series puts toddlers inside the orchestra

Tom Jensen, JSG Music Director

Tom Jensen, JSG Music Director

Keeping hundreds of small children engaged during an orchestra concert is no small task, but when the Junior Symphony Guild's 2011 Tiny Tots Inside the Orchestra season kicks off Tuesday, conductor Tom Jensen will be prepared.

"The first rule is, 'Don't bore the kids,' " Jensen says. "Preschoolers will let you know in no uncertain terms if they're not happy."

As music director and conductor for the guild, a long-standing local nonprofit that, among other things, aims to bring classical music to young people, Jensen created Inside the Orchestra as an outreach program for preschool and elementary-school kids. The program invites these budding music lovers on stage for an up-close-and-personal experience. "It's very visceral to actually feel that you're sitting in the orchestra," Jensen says.

DSO, striking musicians wrangle over proposals

Michael H. Hodges / Detroit News Arts Writer

January 23, 2011

Detroit - The on-again, off-again talks between the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and its striking musicians could be on again -maybe. Both sides said Saturday evening it was possible that talks could resume Sunday, though neither could say whether they would.

Saturday was a day of fractious back-and-forth between the two sides that started over contract proposals for the same dollar amount but applied, depending on who you talked to,to different time periods.

Tiny Tots Inside the Orchestra, 1/26 thru 2/9

This unique orchestra experience for children 6 and under is back at venues throughout Denver from Jan. 26 to Feb. 9.  Check out our Tiny Tots page for dates and venues.  Email sheila@insidetheorchestra.com

with questions or reservations.  Suggested contribution - $5/person.

Tiny Tots Inside the Orchestra

is an engaging 45-minute performance created for children ages 6 and under to introduce young kids to orchestral music.  We put kids literally "inside the orchestra" as they are surrounded on the stage by our adult professional orchestra.  The audience hears well-known repertoire from "Looney Tunes" to Beethoven.  Children stomp like giants during the Montagues and Capulets, grow with music during Also sprach Zarathustra, and riding into the sunset with the William Tell Overture.

The JSG serves over 25,000 children in the Denver metro area each season with support from SCFD, Colorado Council on the Arts, the Denver Foundation, Central City Opera and many other generous sponsors like you.

Suggested contribution is $5/person. All ages are welcome.  A contribution is not necessary - your attendance is most important!

The Colorado Chamber Orchestra, 1/27

January 27, 7:00 PM Highlands Ranch

The Highlands Ranch Cultural Affairs Association presents SuonarePlus, the chamber music componant of the Colorado Chamber Orchestra, on January 27 at 7:00 PM at Cherry Hills Community Church, 3900 Grace Blvd, Highlands Ranch, CO 80126.
Suonare ("to sound") ChamberPlus is pleased to present one of our signature Musical Omnivore programs. Highlights of this concert include world premiers by Colorado composers Mark Geiger and Alexandra Eddy, plus "In the Moment" in which you, the audience members have the opportunity to contribute ideas for an on-the spot improvised Suonare composition. Although this may seem like something stolen from a jazz club, improvisation is firmly rooted in the classical music tradition. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Liszt, Paganini as well as many opera stars were famous improvisers as well as composers/performers. We are pleased to revive this lost tradition tonight!

Featuring: Thomas Blomster, percussion

Gusty Christensen, didgeridoo

Alexandra Eddy, violin

Mary Jungerman, bass clarinet, soprano sax, Native American flute

Robin Olschner, bass

Deborah Schmit-Lobis, piano

Naomi Sue Smith, violin

Trumka: Obama 'Heading in the Right Direction'

Jan. 26, 2011

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka praised President Obama's call to rebuild the nation's infrastructure in his State of the Union address last night but said the proposed federal spending freeze "is the wrong medicine at the wrong time."  Trumka said Obama is "heading in the right direction--but as he outlined tonight, the yardstick must be the health of the middle class and the American economy."

Arts Action Alert - Take Action Now!
January 25, 2011

Tonight President Barack Obama delivered his annual State of the Union speech before the United States Congress where he addressed three areas of concern that resonate with arts advocates: federal spending, jobs and education policy.  Earlier this week, 165 conservative members of Congress representing the Republican Study Committee called for termination of the National Endowment for the Arts and key arts education programs at the U.S. Department of Education. We know that the battle to protect these programs will be tough this year, but with your help, not insurmountable.

Please take two minutes to take action and send a message to your member of Congress in support of the National Endowment for the Arts or arts education at the U.S. Department of Education

Several major newspapers across the country interviewed Americans for the Arts President and CEO Bob Lynch in response to the dubious notion that cutting the arts will actually reduce the nation's deficit.  In today's New York Times, Bob pointed out that the arts support 5.7 million jobs in the United States that generate about $30 billion in taxes, nearly $13 billion of which goes to the federal government and said, "If they're serious about jobs and they're serious about income, they would invest more in the arts."

Since 1965, the National Endowment for the Arts has been serving arts organizations and artists in every state and every community.  The arts not only play an important role in our nation's well-being and foster creativity and innovation, but they also create jobs and prepare our workforce to compete in the global economy. Including the arts in a comprehensive and formal education for every student is critical.  The education reforms that the President and leaders in Congress should be looking at are ones that strengthen the role of the arts and truly implement it as a core academic subject in schools throughout the country.

Please send a message to your member of Congress in support of the National Endowment for the Arts or arts education at the U.S. Department of Education

Help us continue this important work by becoming an official member of the Arts Action Fund.  If you are not already a member play your part by joining the Arts Action Fund today -- it's free and simple.

Feel free to drop by and check us out at 7 p.m. on Thursdays, or check out milehighcommunityband.net for more information. E-mail mjlucas@aol.com if you have other questions!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
