Colorado Chamber Orchestra - SCFD |
Colorado Chamber Orchestra
A model for innovation that doesn't even "qualify" for SCFD funding
By Pete Vriesenga
In its three years of operation, the Colorado Chamber Orchestra (CCO) has shown an unprecedented 300% growth in budget, despite the economic downturn. At the request of the Douglas County School Board, CCO regularly brings professional musicians into the schools through its own innovative school program. In collaboration with Denver's Trinity United Methodist Church, the CCO helped fund a downtown soup kitchen for the homeless without taking one dime in overhead. CCO performs in churches and schools throughout the metro area and regularly premiers new works by local composers. Orchestra members are compensated under a collective bargaining agreement with the DMA and receive a pension contribution paid by CCO.
Community leaders are looking for such innovative models that are qualified to provide educational outreach, stimulate the economy and create jobs. The
Scientific & Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) collects $40 million annually in tax revenue from seven metro-Denver counties and funds over 350 organizations. Incredibly, SCFD has turned CCO away and won't even accept CCO's application.
Why am I not surprised?
SCFD officials may have finally awakened to the reality that it serves no community purpose to fund an unlimited number of organizations, but setting necessary limits requires uniform standards that must be compatible with affected industries. SCFD has never applied measured quality and artistic standards to their application process, nor have they ever expressed any interest in doing so. This then becomes a compound problem because it is equally impossible for SCFD to weed-out and decline funding to current recipients. As evidenced here, SCFD's only option is to close their doors to new entries while allowing existing quality levels to settle where they may.
I expect that CCO will be appealing this decision to the SCFD Board of Directors, so I ask that you closely follow the progression of this story in subsequent e-bulletins. It is imperative that we generate a strong show of support when this appeal is ultimately scheduled for a public hearing. That will send a very strong signal in context of SCFD's "public" meetings that are traditionally attended by managers of recipient organizations.

Education or Entertainment? - AFM/MENC Music Code of Ethics | By Diane Merrill, President, Pikes Peak Musicians' Association, Local #154 Published in CMENC's Journal Colorado Music Educator - Winter 2010
"In recent years it has become apparent that students are increasingly being engaged to perform in non-educational settings. This practice not only deprives professional musicians of securing work that should rightfully belong to them, but it does a disservice to the students (who perhaps may be future professionals) by teaching them that their performance has little or no value. At the American Federation of Musicians Convention this past June I learned that these incidences are occurring not only in Colorado but on a national level and, as a result, AFM Convention Delegates passed a resolution condemning these practices and urging delegates to address the issue in their local jurisdictions."

The state of classical music in Boulder: the show goes on |
Wes Blomster, Boulder Daily Camera Classical Music Critic
Posted: 01/01/2011 11:59:49 PM MST
The growth of music here 30 years ago suggested that Apollo, harp in hand, had settled permanently on the Boulder Mall.
In 1977 the Colorado Music Festival was founded; in 1980 John Reed, guardian of the sacred traditions of D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, brought standing-room-only crowds to a new Gilbert & Sullivan Festival at the University of Colorado.
In 1982 the Boulder Bach Festival debuted. In 1983 the arrival of the Takacs String Quartet at CU put the city on the international chamber-music map.
Soon the Bach Festival shared January with the Colorado MahlerFest, a homegrown endeavor that brought Mahler scholars from around the world to Boulder.
"Music was blooming!" says Sara Sheldon, veteran MahlerFest board member. "There was no end of growth in sight!"
Most of Boulder's many musical organizations remain active -- and successful, even if belts have been tightened, and budgets cut.
The Boulder Phil reported the sale of more tickets for its 2010 holiday "Nutcracker" than in the previous December.
Good news -- yet dismally distant from the Phil that a decade ago packed Macky two nights in a row with such artists as Jessye Norman, Mstislav Rostropovich and Itzhak Perlman.

Detroit Symphony - 2011 Outlook |
January 5, 2011
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We want to wish all of those who have followed the story of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra over the past few months a very happy New Year. Our greatest hope for 2011 is of course to see the DSO back on the stage of Orchestra Hall, giving all of you the chance to read more positive news about music in Detroit soon.
Unfortunately, the closing weeks of 2010 have not brought us much closer to that day. Since the DSO Board and Management rejected the compromise put forward by Governor Granholm and Senator Levin on December 16, they have heard increasing calls from community leaders and music lovers to match the musicians' willingness to seek a settlement. We remain ready to undertake the difficult task of trying to shape a vibrant artistic future for the DSO under the Granholm/Levin proposal of a $36 million three-year contract. We want to see our $12 million sacrifice met with a $3 million commitment from the DSO Board. We hope along with those many outside leaders and music lovers that the DSO management will come back to the table. As month after month of concerts have been cancelled, the damage to our beloved institution becomes worse and worse. It is time to reharness the good will and support offered by those who love the DSO. It is time to stop depleting the DSO's endowment to line the pockets of managers with nothing to manage and a Music Director with no concerts to conduct. It is time to bring the music back.
As always, we appreciate deeply the many contributions--of money, time and energy--from our supporters during this difficult period. Professional musicians across North America and music lovers from Detroit and beyond have contributed an astounding $278,000 to our Contingency Fund as of early 2011. We feel that this generosity reflects how important people think our efforts are, not only for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra but also for other arts institutions across North America. The money has enabled us to carry out our many public relations and concert activities as well as to provide some financial support to the musicians and their families as they continue the struggle. Please visit our website to learn more about our situation, share our Facebook page with your friends, and write letters to the DSO Board: dsoboard@detroitsymphonymusicians.org.
With gratitude and best wishes,
The Musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra

The Dale Bruning Jazz Guitar Series, Vol. II: Phrasing & Arpeggios | At last! The second volume of Dale Bruning's Jazz Guitar Series: Phrasing & Arpeggios is here! We are so excited to make this book available to you. In it, you will find 81 pages explaining the phrasing of triad and 7th chord arpeggios throughout the fingerboard, as well as the wit and wisdom of Dale's insights. Corporate America, paving a downward economic slide |
By Harold Meyerson
Wednesday, January 5, 2011
Harold Meyerson is editor-at-large of American Prospect and the L.A. Weekly.
The city on a hill and the last, best hope of mankind has entered a new period in its history. We are now America, the downwardly mobile.
The problem isn't due to the recession. Would that it were. The decade just concluded is the first in which Americans, on average, have seen their incomes decline. Median household income increased by about $4,000 per decade in the 1980s and '90s: from $42,429 in 1980 to $46,049 in 1990 to $50,557 in 2000 (in 2007 dollars). In 2009, the most recent year for which we have figures, it had declined to $49,777 - but 2009, of course, was a year of deep recession. If we go back to the peak year of the last decade, 2007, we find that median household income was just $50,233- roughly $300 less than it had been in 2000.
Until the housing and financial bubbles burst, of course, we enjoyed the illusion of prosperity through the days of wine and credit. Now we stand on unfamiliar terrain in which almost all the signs of long-term economic health point downward. Our private sector isn't creating jobs at a rate commensurate with our increasing population, much less at a level to significantly reduce unemployment. The share of our civilian population employed has dropped to 58.2 percent - the lowest level since the early '80s, when far fewer women had entered the workforce.
The social pathologies long associated with the inner-city poor - single-parent households, births out of wedlock, drug and alcohol abuse - now stalk the white working class in rural and post-industrial regions far removed from big cities. The middle is falling. Rich Lowry, editor of the conservative National Review, has noted that as wages and employment levels have fallen for the Americans who have graduated high school but not college, their level of out-of-wedlock births (44 percent) has approached that of Americans who haven't completed high school (54 percent). Americans with college diplomas or more, by contrast, have a rate of just 6 percent.

Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the
first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in
band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the
flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax
before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25

for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this
amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and
changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is
optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was
premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the
cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts
(i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students
in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance
involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra
members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order
