State of the Music
December 19, 2010

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

This past week has brought hope and frustration as the musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra seek to end an 11-week-old strike. Many people beyond the DSO are greatly concerned about the impact of the strike on the cultural and economic life of Detroit and Michigan. A group of business, political and community leaders calling themselves the Citizens Committee came together in October, and met several times with both musician and management representatives. They urged the two sides to resume bargaining, and indeed two sessions were held in November. Unfortunately, no progress was made, because management refused to significantly improve its financial offer or even to scale back its demands for other drastic concessions.

On Thursday, December 16, the efforts of the Citizens Committee did bear some fruit. The two leading political figures in Michigan, Governor Jennifer Granholm and U.S. Senator Carl Levin, issued a public letter to both sides in the DSO dispute. After considering the presentations and proposals of DSO musicians and management, they recommended a framework for immediate negotiation, with the understanding that orchestra costs in a new three-year contract would total $36 million (the figure represents a $12 million decrease from the musicians' original position and a $3 million increase from management's implemented proposal). The Citizens Committee issued an appeal for both sides to agree to the politicians' proposal. The DSO musicians accepted the recommendation, but the DSO Board rejected it. The Detroit Free Press and Detroit News reported on the day's events.

It is hard to see what will happen next. Since there are three empty weeks in the original DSO schedule around Christmas, the strike will now last at least 14 weeks. Early in 2011, the DSO Board and management will have to decide whether to announce a 2011-2012 season, in other words, whether to have a Detroit Symphony Orchestra at all or not. At this point they are claiming that they are willing to put the orchestra's very existence at risk because they cannot envision finding $3 million over three years. Bear in mind that they have already saved $3 million by not paying musician salaries or benefits for three months. They are also actively turning away similar amounts of potential contributions as donors overwhelmingly tell the orchestra they will withhold gifts until the orchestra is back on stage. And, most oddly of all, the Board and management find it acceptable to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars of the DSO's limited cash on full staff and Music Director salaries for each month in which no concerts are taking place.

So, sadly, management's rejection of the Granholm/Levin proposal does not appear to be about the $3 million. It is about a naked desire to starve the 82 remaining musicians and librarians into accepting the drastic terms of Proposal B, permanently diminishing the DSO.

The musicians of the DSO nevertheless are grateful to Governor Granholm, Senator Levin, and the Citizens Committee for their attempt to break this stalemate. As always, we are grateful too for the tremendous support we have received not only from Detroit-area music lovers, but from professional musicians from around North America. As of mid-December, contributions to our Contingency Fund unbelievably totaled more than $250,000. Please continue to visit our website, detroitsymphonymusicians.org, to learn more about us, our views, and our ongoing concert activities. We will also greatly appreciate it if you share our Facebook page and write letters to the DSO Board of Directors at dsoboard@detroitsymphonymusicians.org.

Thank you for following our story, and best wishes for a happy Holiday Season.
The Musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

    Sincerely,

The Musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra

LABOR & POLITICS

Richard Trumka on James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act
 December 22, 2010

The passage of this legislation is a solid victory for our country and the first responders who answered the call of their country and paid with their health. Taking care of those who bravely stepped forward on 9/11 transcends partisan politics, and today, 9/11 heroes can finally rest, knowing they will get the care they desperately need.  For that, we are thankful.

We salute all those who were relentless in pushing this legislation.  For more than nine years after the attacks, Senate Republicans played politics with the lives of our nation's most valiant heroes, denying them health care and even watering down the final bill. That's a lousy lesson for everyday Americans, who understand that patriotism means standing up for our heroes, not turning our backs on them. Those who stood against this legislation until the eleventh hour can no longer claim the mantle of patriotism they so commonly invoke for political gain.

Let's resolve to do better in the next Congress and the new year.

I have documentation of a fairly recent appraisal, and it was also recently in an instrument shop in Ann Arbor, MI in an attempt to be sold, and it was appraised then as well. It's a MI number, but I do live in Denver.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
