DSO offers concession on outside work
| Detroit Free Press (Michigan), December 11, 2010 Saturday FREE PRESS MUSIC WRITER
With the crippling Detroit Symphony Orchestra strike in its 10th week, management has modified its controversial work-rule provisions in a new proposal now in front of the musicians. The proposal makes activities like chamber music and teaching voluntary rather than required under the contract. Players who elect to take on the optional work would make an additional $3,800 next season and $7,600 the following year. A spokesman for the musicians said that while the latest proposition begins to address the players' major concern over building such work into their weekly scale, it still leaves overall salaries too low to guarantee a top-tier orchestra. Buy Union for the Holidays, and All Year Long
|
By James Parks, Dec 12, 2010
This holiday season, union families can use their power to help keep good union jobs in the community by purchasing union-made goods and services. The AFL-CIO Union Label & Service Trades Department (UL&STD) has compiled a list of union-made products you can buy and another list of products and services that the AFL-CIO has approved for boycott.
Start your shopping list with a visit to the Union Label website, www.unionlabel.org, and click on Search for Union Products to see if a product is union made and what union produces it. If you can't find what you're looking for there, move on to the websites of individual unions that show up as links on the page.
Another great place to find a wide assortment of union-made products is the AFL-CIO Online Store, where you will find unique apparel, buttons, mugs, decals and other outstanding union items.
If you're buying a wireless phone, check out AT&T's Mobility, the only union wireless company. About 42,000 Communications Workers of America (CWA) members work at Mobility, providing quality service along with the very latest in technology.
In the market for a new car? Check out the UAW's Do Buy list for union-made cars here.
If you're traveling this holiday season, find out which hotels are on the AFL-CIO boycott list here along with dozens of entertainment and recreation services where the federation has endorsed a boycott.
UL&STD President Rich Kline says buying union-made products is the best way to help improve the economy:
Shop for AFM Gear this Holiday
Still looking for the perfect gift for your family and friends this holiday season? Visit AFM Gear for great holiday gifts that show your union pride. We are now featuring new merchandise, including men's and women's sport shirts, T-shirts, jackets, and mugs. Order now to ensure delivery before the holidays! All proceeds from merchandise sales go toward the AFM TEMPO Fund, which supports Members of Congress who fight for issues that are important to musicians and the arts. AFM cannot use general treasury funds for political donations, so we need member donations to the AFM TEMPO Fund. Your contribution can help make a difference, so make the most out of your holiday shopping this year. Sincerely and fraternally yours, Ray Hair, International President American Federation of Musicians of the US and Canada 1501 Broadway, Suite 600 New York, NY 10036

& the 2010 National Scrooge of the Year is... |
Senator Mitch McConnell Elected 2010 Scrooge of the Year
Health & Pharmaceutical Industry, Hyatt runners-up in national contest to determine who did the most harm to workers and their families this year.
Senator Mitch McConnell took 42% of the thousands of votes cast in Jobs with Justice's eleventh annual national contest to determine the greediest, most cold-hearted person or company of the year. A small number of Senators, led by conservative Senate Minority leader Mitch "puppet of the rich" McConnell, have spent this Congressional session aggressively blocking almost all legislation from passing, especially laws that would help working people. McConnell could have shown great leadership to support people in need at a time when so many are struggling, but this Scrooge doesn't care about governing or making this country a better place to live. McConnell's goal is to do whatever is necessary to hoard power for himself and his party.
"We hope that by being elected national Scrooge of the Year, Senator McConnell will see the 'Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come' and understand the dire consequences that his actions will have for generations of Americans," said Sarita Gupta, National Jobs with Justice Executive Director.
The Kentucky chapter of Jobs with Justice plans to deliver the Scrooge of the Year award in person to Senator McConnell's offices in Louisville.
The Health Insurance and Pharmaceutical industry, with their single-minded focus on profits at the expense of our health, was the first runner-up with 22% of the vote. Hyatt Hotels won 10% of the vote for attempts to eliminate quality healthcare and make the recession permanent for its employees, and for their safety record. Other nominees included Rite Aid, Publix, and Giumarra Vineyards, and popular write-in candidates were Honeywell CEO Dave Cote and Del Monte Fresh. Express Scripts was a candidate for Scrooge of the Year, but reached a settlement with workers and their nomination was pulled. You can read more about all of the candidates on the Jobs with Justice website.
In addition to the national Scrooge of the Year contest, each year local Jobs with Justice coalitions across the country hold Scrooge of the Year elections to determine the most deserving greedy Scrooge in their hometowns. This year's local winners include: Marsh Supermarkets in Indianapolis, IN, US Chamber of Commerce CEO Thomas Donohue in Washington, DC, Governor Jan Brewer in Tucson, AZ, Pinnacle Entertainment in St. Louis, MO, and Rex Sinquefield in Kansas City.

Trumka: Tax Deal Comes at Terrible Price | Dec. 17, 2010 Congress passed an $858 billion tax deal last night that extends vital assistance in emergency unemployment benefits (UI) for more than a year for the 1.4 million-plus long-term job seekers. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says this deal comes at a terrible price. "While desperately poor families are forgoing Christmas this year, Republicans fought tooth-and-nail for a gilded gift basket of income tax cuts worth $120 billion for America's super-rich, and a new estate tax exemption would let off all but America's 50 wealthiest families. Let's call these the cut-and-run Republicans, who cut taxes and run from responsibilities."

Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the
first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in
band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the
flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax
before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25

for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this
amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and
changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is
optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was
premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the
cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts
(i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students
in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance
involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra
members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order
