The Real Story
| The Musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Here is a brief word from the Musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to bring you up to date on the DSO's unfortunate situation. We are now in the tenth week of our strike. Faced with demands from the DSO Board and management to cut salaries by more than one third and to make drastic changes in the job description of an orchestra member, we took the serious step of walking off the job on October 4. Despite fitful attempts since then by outside community and political figures to bring the two sides closer, management has shown no real willingness to find common ground during several formal and informal contacts.
We invite you to visit our website (detroitsymphonymusicians.org) to understand what is happening in Detroit. The homepage article entitled "The Real Story" provides a snapshot of where we are, along with links to articles containing more details about what is at stake. In addition to the support of many Detroit-area music lovers, we have received an unprecedented outpouring of contributions from other professional musicians in North America, more than $140,000 as of this writing. Musicians everywhere see the extreme demands being made by DSO management as an attempt to open the door for radical restructuring of the careers and lives of orchestra members across the U.S. and Canada.
We thank you for your ongoing attention and support. On our website you can find information about how to help us by signing our petition and by writing to DSO Board members. It is our strongest hope that with your help we will find a way not only to preserve our great institution but to ensure that orchestras everywhere do not use difficult economic times as the pretext for an attack on artistic quality.
Sincerely,
The Musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra

Memorial Service for Lillian Covillo, Colorado Ballet Co-Founder
| It is with a heavy heart that we share with you the death of Miss Lillian Covillo. Together, with lifelong friend and business partner Freidann Parker, Miss Covillo co-founded one of Denver's oldest and most established arts organizations, Colorado Ballet. She died peacefully at the age 89.
A Denver native, Miss Covillo devoted her life to that art she loved and poured her soul into enriching the Denver's arts scene. If not for the dedication, courage and vision of Miss Covillo, Colorado Ballet would not be in existence today, and Denver's rich cultural tapestry would be far less opulent.
As stated by Senator Bennet in honor of Colorado Ballet's 50th anniversary, "In the imagination of lifelong friends Freidann Parker and Lillian Covillo, a place of learning, artistry and expertise was born: Colorado Ballet."
Even in her later years, Miss Covillo rarely missed a production and was even at Colorado Ballet's most recent production of Dracula in October. We are grateful to have honored Miss Covillo earlier this year at the Anniversary Celebration on Oct. 21, at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.
She was in great spirits at the event and had the opportunity to see numerous people who have been a part of Colorado Ballet over the last 50 years. Colorado Ballet would not be here today if not for Miss Covillo's vision and dedication. She will be greatly missed by her Colorado Ballet family and we send our deepest condolences to her family.
"It was a great honor to know Lillian for 4 and a half years," said Colorado Ballet artistic director Gil Boggs. "It is very seldom that one has the opportunity to meet such a remarkable person. She gave a tremendous amount to Colorado Ballet and the citizens of Denver. Lillian will be greatly missed."
Preceded in death by co-founder and partner, Freidann Parker, her parents, John and Philomena Covillo, her sister, Betty (Jim) Strong. Miss Covillo is survived by her nephews: Jim (Debbi), John (Becky) and Joe Strong: her nieces Janet (George) Wasson and Jeanine (Dan) Erickson. She is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews and her Colorado Ballet family.
A Memorial Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 2010 at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church (2225 South Colorado Boulevard in Denver). Reception to follow service. Family suggests contributions be made to the Colorado Ballet Founders' Fund c/o Colorado Ballet, 1278 Lincoln St., Denver, CO 80203.
Miss Covillo touched many people throughout her life and we welcome anyone who was impacted by her to pay their final respects.

Friday, December 10 - 7 & 9pm :: Kneebody :: $15
Kneebody flies above the label zone, crafting instrumental, postmodern music that jukes convention and genre. If the group's intricate compositions had to be filed away in a record bin, chances are they would rest in the jazz corner, but the Los Angeles/NYC quintet touches on post-rock, classical, and avant-garde forms as often as they flirt with swing. kneebody.com

Vote now for the National Scrooge of the Year! |
 | | |
Each year, national Jobs with Justice gives an "award" to the greediest, most cold-hearted company or person of the year. Nominations for the 2010 Scrooge of the Year are in, and it's time to vote.
VOTE NOW!
There are seven worthy candidates to win this year's Scrooge award (or write in your own candidate):
- Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell was nominated for leading the Republican party in aggressively blocking legislation that would benefit working people;
- Express Scripts was chosen because despite racking up profits of $1.7 billion last year processing 12% of the nation's prescriptions, they are demanding draconian concessions from workers and threatening to close facilities
- Hyatt was nominated for trying to eliminate quality healthcare and make the recession permanent for its employees, and for their safety record;
- Rite Aid was chosen for failing to bargain a first contract with workers who joined a union two years ago and demanding unreasonable concessions from other workers;
- Publix was selected because they won't join other companies in pledging to improve wages and working conditions for the farmworkers who pick their companies' tomatoes;
- Giumarra Vineyards is a candidate because of their long history of intimidating and bullying workers and violating their rights;
- The health and pharmaceutical industry was nominated for their single-minded focus on profits at the expense of our health.
You can read more about the candidates, and then VOTE for your favorite greedy Scrooge!
We'll announce the winner on December 20th.

Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the
first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in
band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the
flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax
before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25

premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the
cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts
(i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students
in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance

members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order
