Happy Thanksgiving!

New Agreement with Colorado Ballet
By Pete Vriesenga

Following 19 months of protracted negotiations, a 3-year agreement between DMA and Colorado Ballet was ratified by the musicians on Monday (11/22). This agreement came together only a few days before the 11/27 opening of The Nutcracker. The musicians soundly rejected CB's previous offer just one week earlier.

DMA and Colorado Ballet have a 15-year collective bargaining relationship, but this becomes the first multiyear agreement. The only issue on the table was job security and fair hiring procedures until management came back 12 months into the process asking for a 20% wage concession. Our DMA Committee was very willing to accept a wage cut, provided CB was willing to establish a core orchestra consistent with industry standards.

The resulting agreement reflects a healthy compromise from both sides. The agreement falls short of identifying a core orchestra, but a framework is now in place that identifies a formula for a fixed call list. Negotiations will continue early in 2011 to finalize processes related to a call list that will become established in the Master Agreement. Processes are now in place for auditions, fair evaluations and non-reengagement. A 10% wage cut will apply to the 1st year of the Agreement, but wages bounce back with a cumulative 12.7% increase over years 2 and 3.

We are grateful for the time and efforts of the management committee: Artistic Director Gil Boggs, board representative Ellen Balaguer and legal counsel Chad Orvis. Please show your continued support by encouraging friends and family to buy tickets for Nutcracker and upcoming productions. CB's latest discount offer can be found later in this bulletin.

Most importantly, please join me in thanking my fellow committee members: Mike Allen (Chair), John King, Stuart Mock, DMA Vice President Thomas Blomster and legal counsel Joe Goldhammer. They put their careers on the line to see these necessary changes through. Collectively they have dedicated 100 months of detailed and tireless work toward this end.

For starters, I suggest that we all buy them a beer!

In Solidarity,
Pete Vriesenga, President

How Corporate America Is Pushing Us All Off a Cliff ...a letter from Michael Moore

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Friends,

When someone talks about pushing you off a cliff, it's just human nature to be curious about them. Who are these people, you wonder, and why would they want to do such a thing?

That's what I was thinking when corporate whistleblower Wendell Potter revealed that, when "Sicko" was being released in 2007, the health insurance industry's PR firm, APCO Worldwide, discussed their Plan B: "Pushing Michael Moore off a cliff."

But after looking into it, it turns out, it's nothing personal! APCO wants to push everyone off a cliff.

APCO was hatched in 1984 as a subsidiary of the Washington, D.C. law firm Arnold & Porter -- best known for its years of representing the giant tobacco conglomerate Philip Morris. APCO set up fake "grassroots" organizations around the country to do the bidding of Big Tobacco. All of a sudden, "normal, everyday, in-no-way-employed-by-Philip Morris Americans" were popping up everywhere. And it turned out they were outraged -- outraged! -- by exactly the things APCO's clients hated (such as, the government telling tobacco companies what to do). In particular, they were "furious" that regular people had the right to sue big corporations...you know, like Philip Morris. (For details, see the 2000 report "The CALA Files" (PDF) by my friends and colleagues Carl Deal and Joanne Doroshow.)

Right about now you may be wondering: how many Americans get pushed off a cliff by Big Tobacco every year? The answer is 443,000 Americans die every year due to smoking. That's a big cliff.

CLOCK'S TICKING

Lawmakers who seem to only care about the super-rich made sure Congress left town for Thanksgiving without taking action to maintain emergency jobless benefits. Now, 800,000 long-term job seekers will lose their benefits on Nov. 30. And the total is set to rise to 2 million in December.

What the Election Results Mean for the Arts
http://artsactionfund.org/page/m/3f44ec1a/16099707/6e98abae/7f520f2c/4172350846/VEsH/

As I get ready for Thanksgiving it's hard for me to believe that the elections were more than 20 days ago. For those of us in politics, the elections are almost like a holiday - we look forward to it all year. But just because the elections are over doesn't mean our work is finished - in fact we're just getting started. We've even spent the past few weeks figuring out what the results from the ballot box mean for the arts.

Political junkies like me aren't the only ones who should care about the election results though. What happened on November 2, 2010 will have a far reaching impact on the arts and arts education. I invite you to take a few moments to learn just what the election results mean for the country and you as an arts advocate.

Sincerely -

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
