NLRB Ruling Regarding Facebook
NLRB: Facebook Discussions Between Co-Workers are now Protected Speech
By:
Michael Whitney Tuesday November 9, 2010 1:44 pm

Lafe Solomon, the board's acting general counsel, said, "This is a fairly straightforward case under the National Labor Relations Act - whether it takes place on Facebook or at the water cooler, it was employees talking jointly about working conditions, in this case about their supervisor, and they have a right to do that."

This is why it's nice to have a Democratic majority on the National Labor Relations Board: workers get rights. The National Labor Relations Board ruled that an employee can safely discuss work issues with their co-workers on Facebook without fearing punishment by their employer.

Slatkin stays mum on DSO strike
By MARK STRYKER
Free Press Staff Writer
Oct. 31, 2010

Where's Leonard?

Nearly a month into the Detroit Symphony Orchestra strike, music director Leonard Slatkin has yet to speak publicly about the bitter labor dispute that has engulfed his orchestra. The DSO's chief artistic leader and most widely known advocate has repeatedly declined comment, even as musicians, management, critics, pundits and bloggers have weighed in on the issues.

Famously talkative, Slatkin's silence may seem out of character, but it is no accident. Labor disputes are regarded as the third rail for music directors, turning otherwise strong-willed conductors into wallflowers. Hired by the board but unable to function effectively without the goodwill of the players, music directors generally seek sanctuary behind a shield of neutrality.

"They find themselves squarely in the middle," said Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras in New York. "There isn't a position to take that doesn't cause problems."

Even milquetoast comments risk being misinterpreted, and to favor either musicians or management is to court the wrath of the other side.

The story of Junichi Hirokami, former music director of the Columbus (Ohio) Symphony, is Exhibit A when it comes to cautionary tales. In 2008, when the board pushed musicians for pay cuts and a reduction in numbers to cope with dire finances, Hirokami took the players' side, calling the orchestra board
"stupid people" in the New York Times and castigating them for not raising enough money.

"I don't care if they fire me," he told the Times.

The board obliged, dismissing him six months later.

Sat, Nov 13, 7:30PM
Brandi Carlile's ethereal, melancholy ballads reflect her love for old-school country but she is definitely of today. "I get all sorts of comparisons but never to one person," she says."It's more like, 'Sheryl Crow meets Patsy Cline,' which makes me feel good." A string of recent orchestral engagements have solidified this talented singer's reputation as one of the most exciting artists of her generation.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
