THANK YOU!

Thank You from Mary Jungerman
Dear DMA colleagues and friends:

This message is to thank you for the amazing outpouring of support our family received after the sudden death of my husband in July.  Your calls, visits, wonderful food, and your continued invitations and support have made a very sad and difficult time more bearable for all of us.  My daughters and I have been overwhelmed by your generosity and loving care, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  In times of distress, you find out what people are made of, and you are all the very best!!  Thank you so much,
Mary Jungerman, Lois and Clara Geertz

Striking Detroit Musicians' Concert to Be Televised
By DANIEL J. WAKIN
The New York Times
October 14, 2010,

The striking musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra have won a small propaganda coup. A local television station, WADL-TV38, has decided to broadcast one of their concerts, a program on Oct. 24 at a church in the affluent Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. The musicians went on strike on Oct. 4 over wage and benefit cuts and work rule changes at the financially troubled orchestra. They have been playing concerts on their own, to earn publicity and money to support the strike, a common practice in such disputes. The program features Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" and Brahms Symphony No. 2, conducted by Joseph Silverstein.

One of MJO's missions is to support jazz in the schools and this program, in our 6th year, continues to be wildly successful. Reservation ALWAYS recommended at Dazzle (303-839-5100). Performer Pass Acceptance at the CCC Garage!

Effective immediately, Performer Pass Coupons will be accepted for parking use, at all times (excluding CCC garage specific Black-Out dates), on the P2 level of the Convention Center Garage.  Click Here for detailed information sheet that outlines the specific instructions for Coupon use.  Please be sure to distribute this important information to all your organization team members.  The Performer Pass Coupon can be used at the CCC garage at nearly any time, regardless if there is a Black-Out date at the DPAC Garage, or not.  The only exception to the Pass use is if the CCC Garage has it's own specific Black-Out date based on their facility parking needs. Use of Performer Passes is also subject to the Master Black-Out Schedule for both garages.

Because the two parking garages use two completely different parking management systems, a simple low-tech procedure has been established to accommodate Complex employee parking at the CCC Garage.  Basically, Coupon holders wishing to park in the CCC garage just need to follow3-Easy Steps:
1.) Park on Level P2,
2.) Write the 4-digit vehicle stall # on the Coupon, and
3.) Drop the Coupon into a locked drop box located along the route to DPAC.
We are very delighted to include the CCC Garage into the Performer Pass Program - it certainly expands employee parking options in the immediate area.

Reminder, the first DPAC Only Black-Out date of the season is Saturday, October 16th!

"Black-Out" Dates for DPAC Performer Parking Passes (rev. Oct 4)
The Denver Musicians Association is one of several entities that may distribute DPAC parking passes, which we currently available for $6 each. The policy for distribution and use of parking passes is detailed in a MOU with the parking complex.
As detailed in a Sept 15 Memo, performer parking passes will be subject to Black-Out and Red Flag Dates (rev. Oct 4) when these parking passes will be invalid. These are designated high volume dates as the Holiday Season approaches, and will also affect parking in the Colorado Convention Center (CCC) garage. Immediate dates in the DPAC garage are Saturday, October 16 and Saturday, October 23.
Please make alternate arrangements on these specific dates, and be sure to allow plenty of extra time.

LABOR & POLITICS

Report Shows Widespread Income Disparity in Metro Denver

Unemployed worker, Kelly Wiedemer, has applied to over 600 jobs since she was laid off two years ago. After moving back in with her mother, Kelly struggles to find money for basics such as food and toilet paper.

"The only employers that are starting to hire again are in low paying sectors and those wages don't amount to enough to make ends meet.  There just aren't enough good-paying jobs and there aren't enough services for people stuck in my situation," Kelly notes.

FRESC just released a new report which brings to light the widespread income and racial disparity in the Metro region and shows why people like Kelly are having a hard time getting by.  It's based on new Census data for 2009, released in September, that is the first look at the so-called Great Recession of 2008-2009.  Click here to read our report.

The Denver-Aurora Metro area saw high poverty and income inequality in 2009. Median household income for African Americans in the Denver Metro area declined by a staggering 23% from 2007. Uninsurance rates for Denver were 20%, significantly higher than at the state and national levels.

FRESC continues to organize and advocate for policy and systems change to build an economy that works for all families.  To support this work, please donate by clicking here.  Your important contribution will help us build a better economy in the Metro region.

Read more about Kelly and the new data here.

In solidarity,
The FRESC Team

What's Missing? (Besides Jobs)

A corporation cuts jobs in your community and moves them overseas-and nobody seems to notice. Hardworking people are left jobless, but outside your town, it doesn't seem to make a ripple. Meanwhile, corporations keep shipping jobs to wherever they can find the cheapest labor and fewest safety regulations, and Republicans in Congress keep blocking laws that would keep jobs here. Soon enough, you realize that if you hadn't seen it for yourself, you wouldn't know what had happened.

That's what Working America designed Job Tracker to fight. And it's why we're asking for your help.

Job Tracker already includes information from multiple government agencies showing every company we could find that's exported jobs, but we know that's just the tip of the iceberg. We need you to tell us what corporate bad guys are missing in your community.

Here's what you do. Go to Job Tracker and enter your zip code to pull up a map of companies that have exported jobs from your area. Is anything missing? If you know of a company that's outsourced jobs and it isn't listed, click this link to tell us about it. Once we've substantiated your report, we'll add it to Job Tracker.

Corporations have gotten really good at slashing American jobs without attracting widespread public notice. Together, we can make it harder for them to hide, and easier for us to pressure Congress to crack down on abuses like tax loopholes for outsourcers.

In solidarity,

Working America, AFL-CIO

P.S. Help spread the word. Tell your friends about Job Tracker, and encourage them to report missing companies, too.

Call for GBYO brass musicians
Dear music teachers,

We're very excited that many people are showing a great deal of interest in the new Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras, and we've already received more than 150 audition applications. However, we're light on brass, especially low brass. We have trumpet players, but need horns, trombones, and tuba.
We are only a few brass players away from assembling a full orchestra, and I hope you'll join me in seeking out talented and enthusiastic brass students to work with Maestro Gary Lewis, the artistic staff, and the GBYO mentoring program in this inaugural season. It promises to be a tremendous year full of wonderful opportunities.
I'd also like to remind you at this time that all GBYO musicians are required to participate in their parallel school music ensemble and take private lessons.
More about our programs and conductors, and an audition application, can be found online at www.greaterboulderyo.org and I'd certainly be more than happy to talk with you about the coming year.

Thanks!
Brian Jack

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
