Violinist cites threats in canceling Orchestra Hall
concert
|
By MARK STRYKER Free Press staff writer Violinist Sarah Chang has canceled her Monday recital at
Orchestra Hall after receiving a firestorm of criticism from striking musicians
of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and their supporters. Some of the e-mails Chang told DSO management she received
through her Web site, www.sarahchang.com, crossed the line from expressing
displeasure to physical threats and career intimidation. Chang's Los
Angeles-based manager Jenny Vogel declined comment. DSO president Anne Parsons
also declined to give specifics, citing Chang's desire to remove herself from
further controversy. Read On

AFM Leaflets San Antonio Performances of Beauty and the Beast
|
The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) will begin a leafleting campaign against NETworks Presentations, LLC's production of the musical Beauty and the Beast in San Antonio, Texas. Tour producer NETworks Presentations has chosen not to contract touring musicians at rates of pay and with benefits that are acceptable to professional musicians. Instead, NETworks has engaged non-AFM musicians at substandard rates of pay and under substandard working conditions. In addition, the Disney musical will be presented using a pit orchestra of only 11 musicians, despite the fact that 26 are called for in the original, award-winning Broadway score.
The AFM intends to make the public aware that theatre patrons are paying for a premium theatre experience, but the reduced orchestra of underpaid musicians will result in a watered-down version of the musical. "Without use of the full orchestration that the composer intended, musicians suffer, and theatre patrons are unable to experience the quality show they believe they have paid for," says AFM International President Ray Hair. "When the quality of the product is cut, no one wins."
The AFM's leafleting campaign coincides with the San Antonio presentation of the musical running October 12 through October 17. To support the AFM in telling NETworks Presentations that its refusal to hire the appropriate number of contracted musicians for the beloved Disney musical Beauty and the Beast is unacceptable, please sign the petition at www.afm.org/beauty. |
German Orchestras on Strike
|
From Musical America Review-October 8, 2010
German Orchestras on Strike
The orchestras of Berlin's Komische
Oper and Deutsche Oper went on strike Sunday evening, respectively leaving
performances of Orlando and Swan Lake during intermission to
be continued with piano accompaniment.
The musicians are demanding,
among other things, a 12 percent raise after salaries were frozen in 2002. They
are also challenging their obligation to play as unpaid replacement musicians in
Berlin's different orchestras. Recent negotiations between Berlin and the German
Orchestral Association (DOV) put the city's opera musicians at a salary ten
percent less than that of musicians in the rest of the country's 100 orchestras.
The groups will reportedly continue to strike until their employer makes a new
offer. Salary disputes have prompted over 200 protests and 80 sympathy strikes
throughout the country. Performances by the Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig are
among those that have been cancelled.

Performer Pass Acceptance at the CCC Garage!
|
Effective immediately, Performer Pass Coupons will
be accepted for parking use, at all times (excluding CCC garage specific
Black-Out dates), on the P2 level of the Convention Center Garage. Click Here for detailed information sheet that outlines the specific instructions for Coupon
use. Please be sure to distribute this important information to all your
organization team members. The Performer Pass Coupon can be used at the CCC
garage at nearly any time, regardless if there is a Black-Out date at the DPAC
Garage, or not. The only exception to the Pass use is if the CCC Garage has
it's own specific Black-Out date based on their facility parking needs. Use of Performer Passes is also subject to the Master Black-Out Schedule for both garages.
Because the two parking garages use two completely
different parking management systems, a simple low-tech procedure has been
established to accommodate Complex employee parking at the CCC Garage.
Basically, Coupon holders wishing to park in the CCC garage just need to
follow3-Easy
Steps:
1.) Park on Level P2,
2.) Write the 4-digit vehicle
stall # on the Coupon, and 3.)
Drop the Coupon into a locked drop box located along the route to DPAC.
We are very delighted to include the CCC Garage
into the Performer Pass Program - it certainly expands employee parking options
in the immediate area.
Reminder, the first DPAC
Only Black-Out date of the season is
Saturday, October 16th!

"Black-Out" Dates for DPAC Performer Parking Passes (rev. Oct 4)
| The Denver Musicians Association is one of several entities that may distribute DPAC parking passes, which we currently available for $6 each. The policy for distribution and use of parking passes is detailed in a MOU with the parking complex. As detailed in a Sept 15 Memo, performer parking passes will be subject to Black-Out and Red Flag Dates (rev. Oct 4) when these parking passes will be invalid. These are designated high volume dates as the Holiday Season approaches, and will also affect parking in the Colorado Convention Center (CCC) garage. Immediate dates in the DPAC garage are
Saturday, October 16
and Saturday, October 23.
Please make alternate arrangements on these specific dates, and be sure to allow plenty of extra time.

Call for GBYO brass
musicians
| Dear music teachers,
We're very excited that many people are
showing a great deal of interest in the new Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras,
and we've already received more than 150 audition applications. However, we're
light on brass, especially low brass. We have trumpet players, but need horns,
trombones, and tuba.
We are only a few brass players away from
assembling a full orchestra, and I hope you'll join me in seeking out talented
and enthusiastic brass students to work with Maestro Gary Lewis, the artistic
staff, and the GBYO mentoring program in this inaugural season. It promises to
be a tremendous year full of wonderful opportunities.
I'd also like to remind you at this time
that all GBYO musicians are required to participate in their parallel school
music ensemble and take private lessons.
More about our programs and conductors,
and an audition application, can be found online at www.greaterboulderyo.org
and I'd certainly be more than happy to talk with you about the coming
year.
Thanks!

Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the
first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in
band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the
flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax
before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25
