Will Schwartz
Maestro Will Schwartz died on Friday, August 27, 2010

Uncle Will Remembered by Thomas A. Blomster

Will Schwartz
When Will Schwartz stepped down as Music Director of the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra in 1999 he quipped: "I think 50 years is long enough". Maestro Schwartz always had a quick wit and sharp intellect, and this tongue-in-cheek comment was typical of him. I did not meet Will until some years later when my wife Noriko Nikki Tsuchiya and I first started dating after meeting in the pit for the Fort Collins Nutcracker. Nikki attended CSU as a young woman, and along with her piano teacher Wendel Diebel, Maestro Schwartz was a formative figure in her life. She frequently accompanied Uncle Will for late night chamber music reading sessions. In addition to his work as a conductor, Maestro Schwartz was a stunning violinist.
Maestro Schwartz joined the music faculty at CSU in 1949 after serving in the military and touring as a solo violinist. He felt that Fort Collins would be a good place to raise a family and immediately took over the reins of the Fort Collins Symphony.
I was fortunate to spend time with Uncle Will over the last years of his life. Talking with Will was a rare treat. Between his humor, curiosity, and tremendous knowledge, conversations were wide ranging in topic and always funny.
In 2007, Nikki and I decided we should honor Maestro Schwartz with a concert. We called the program "A Concert of Good Will" and ask Uncle Will if he would conduct the orchestra we would assemble for him. The Maestro side- stepped us and ask me to conduct the concert. So we contacted anyone and everyone we could think of to assemble an orchestra of musicians who had played under Uncle Will's baton. The enormity of Will's influence on Colorado musicians and beyond was quickly evident as musicians volunteered to play for this concert. Those who could not attend sent moving tributes in the form of letters and cards addressed to Will which were compiled and presented to him.
With folks coming from all over Colorado and even outside the state we held one rehearsal, had a pot luck dinner, and then performed the concert. Dr. James Fittz performed Bruch's Kol Nidrei, Nikki played a movement from J. S. Bach's Concerto in F minor, and we ended the program with Mendelssohn's Reformation Symphony. I will never forget conducting that concert. The musicians ranged from professionals to folks who hadn't played their instrument in a few years. And yet it was a magical concert, and in the middle of conducting the Mendelssohn I realized "Uncle Will is letting me conduct HIS ORCHESTRA". Many of the violinists were Will's students, including Don Robinson and Kay Kirelis from the Colorado Springs Symphony. Maestro Schwartz's style was imprinted on all of these fine violinists and was quite evident in the sound the violin sections produced.
At the end of the concert, Uncle Will came to the podium to a long standing ovation. After the applause died down, Will addressed the orchestra. I don't remember everything he said, but at the end he said thank you and goodbye to all of us present. We all hung on every word he spoke, and he addressed us with his typical wit, charm, and authority, commanding the room and letting us all know that he really was the Maestro.
Maestro Will Schwartz will be missed for many reasons. I miss him because Uncle Will knew how to do it right, and because there are so few musicians in today's world who will dedicate themselves to a community the way Maestro Will Schwartz did.

Tribute to Mr. Schwartz by Noriko Nikki Tsuchiya
Will Schwartz died after devoting over 60 years of his life to music and to the musical life of Fort Collins. I knew him for over 35 of those years, first as a student at CSU accompanying his violin students. Later, I was privileged to collaborate with Will on his faculty recitals at CSU. I still can't quite remember how or why this came about but it expanded my musicianship immensely. From working with him, I learned flexibility and to be a nimble partner as he played with a great sense of freedom and spontaneity. Will had a wonderful elasticity of rhythm superimposed over an infallible beat. As time passed, we rarely needed to talk during rehearsals but played for hours on end, sometimes getting together and just sight-reading for fun. Later, after my first marriage, children, divorce and remarriage, we became friends. Actually he was more like a father figure to me. I will miss his kind eyes probing as he asked me if I was happy, advising me on my love life and his sly self-deprecating humor. He was a true original and not afraid to show it, something sorely missing in our copycat society. In recent years, he tried to get me to call him Will but then as now, he was and always will be Mr. Schwartz, great musician and mentor, ever the Maestro and forever my cherished friend.

On Labor Day, Work to Save the Middle Class

By Leo W. Gerard, International President, USW
September 3, 2010

This Labor Day feels gloomy. It's a celebration of work when there is not enough of it, a day off when too many desperately seek a day on.
America has commemorated two Labor Days since this brutal recession began near the end of George Bush's presidency in December of 2007. Now the relentless high unemployment, the ever-rising foreclosures, the unremitting wage and benefit take-backs have replaced American optimism and enthusiasm with fear and anger.
Happy Labor Day.
On this holiday, we can rant with Glenn Beck, kick the dog and hate the neighbor lucky enough to retain his job. Or we can do something different. We can join with our neighbors, employed and unemployed, our foreclosed-on children, our elderly parents fearing cuts in their Social Security lifeline and our fellow workers worrying that the furlough ax will strike them next. Together we can organize and mobilize and create a grassroots groundswell that gives government no choice but to respond to our needs, the needs of working people.

Once again...the Stickman Trio is back at Cool River Cafe for more dates, hoping this is a trend. We're there next Fri/Sat the 10th/11th, from 8-11. For these dates I'll have my old compadre Mary Stribling on bass, and percussion maestro Bill Hill on drums. Mary is a Denver legend, founding member of the Mother Folkers (who have a gig Sept 18 at the Mercury Cafe), and one of my favorite bassists. Bill is the longtime tympanist with the Colorado Symphony, and I've done many Symphony Pops concerts with him over the years...to get him for my trio is amazing, he'll be back with the Symphony soon for their fall schedule.

Also catch Jack Hadley at CR every Thurs, and on weekends wheck n we're not there...come on out...Stickman

LABOR & POLITICS

Detroit Symphony Joins Labor Day Parade
Musicians unite with labor community as contract talks stall
Lawrence B. Johnson / Special To The Detroit News
Musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, at an impasse in their contract talks with management, will step off first in Monday's Labor Day Parade, stride for stride with some major national supporters.
With their contract now expired and no further bargaining sessions scheduled, the DSO musicians see the annual parade honoring labor as a chance to take their case to fellow workers in Metro Detroit.
"We want to show that we're part of the labor community, that we're workers with the same concerns as other workers," said Karl Pituch, a DSO French horn player and chairman of the musicians' bargaining committee.
Three national music labor figures will march with the DSO musicians and speak at a rally at Hart Plaza at the parade's end.
"We're going to tell the story of an employer who's asking musicians who bring such joy to the world to debase their own standard of living," says Ray Hair, president of the American Federation of Musicians in New York City.

Trumka: Labor Day, a Defining Time for Working People
Sept. 1, 2010
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says working families are looking for candidates this fall who demonstrate "economic patriotism" to rebuild the nation. At a press conference this morning, he outlined an aggressive mobilization of working families kicking off this Labor Day weekend. "We will either rebuild a fundamentally different economy that values hard work and a strong middle class--or turn back toward one that puts corporate interests before people."

Call for GBYO brass musicians
Dear music teachers,

We're very excited that many people are showing a great deal of interest in the new Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras, and we've already received more than 150 audition applications. However, we're light on brass, especially low brass. We have trumpet players, but need horns, trombones, and tuba.
We are only a few brass players away from assembling a full orchestra, and I hope you'll join me in seeking out talented and enthusiastic brass students to work with Maestro Gary Lewis, the artistic staff, and the GBYO mentoring program in this inaugural season. It promises to be a tremendous year full of wonderful opportunities.
I'd also like to remind you at this time that all GBYO musicians are required to participate in their parallel school music ensemble and take private lessons.
More about our programs and conductors, and an audition application, can be found online at www.greaterboulderyo.org and I'd certainly be more than happy to talk with you about the coming year.

Thanks!

Congas for Sale - I am downsizing my gear and have decided to sell my almost new Toca Traditional congas!  It is a set of 3: 11" quinto, 11 3/4" conga, and 12 1/2" tumba, each with a bag!  They are the natural oak finish drums, with near new heads!  I have only used them for recording sessions, since I have fiberglass drums for live gigs.  I am willing to sell the set for $600, which is far below the cost of a new set of pro drums.  Please call or email if you or someone you know is interested!  I am attaching a photo of the drums from Toca's web site.

Thanks for your help, and have a blessed day!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
