In Memory - Richard E. Geertz
Richard E. Geertz
Richard E. Geertz
Richard Edward Geertz died at his home in Boulder on July 17, 2010.  He was 65.  A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish in Boulder on Friday, August 27 at 5:30pm.  Burial will be at 10:00am Saturday, August 28 at Sacred Heart of Mary cemetery.  He is survived by his wife of 36 years Mary Jungerman and two daughters, Lois Kathryn Geertz and Clara Elizabeth Geertz, a brother John Geertz-Larson and two sisters, Wendy Geertz and Kathryn Schopp.

A native of Chicago, Geertz earned the Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Grinnell College, a year of law school at the University of Minnesota, a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Minnesota, and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Recently retired from nearly 30 years as Tuition Classification Officer in the Registrar's office at CU/Boulder, Geertz was also well known in the community as a singer and choral conductor, performing in and conducting groups such as the Boulder Bach Festival Chorus, his own Boulder Community Chorus, which he founded and directed in the 1980's, and many choral groups in the front range area.  He prepared the chorus for the Colorado Music Festival's performance of Gustav Mahler's Symphony #3 with Giora Bernstein in the 1980's and conducted the chorus for the Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts' performances of Amahl and the Night Visitors. At the time of his death he served as cantor for St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish.   Volunteer activities included past service on the board of Campus Ministries at CU/Boulder, income tax preparation for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, Eco Cycle, chairing and serving on the CU Disciplinary Committee and officiating for many years as an election judge.

Rick was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hiking, sailing, canoeing, camping and birding.  He also played bridge, read voraciously on history, politics and current affairs, watched every movie ever made, and enjoyed travel and time spent with family and friends. The family is stunned by their sudden and incalculable loss but is comforted by overwhelming love and support from family, friends and colleagues.

Contributions may be made in Rick's name to the Chuck and Jane Byers Fund for Choral Music Education (through the CU Foundation at the College of Music), St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish Food Bank, and the National Park Service (http://www.nps.gov/romo/supportyourpark/index.htm).
DSO Musicians to lead Labor Day Parade
Detroit Symphony Orchestra Musicians to Lead 2010 Labor Day Parade
* The Detroit Symphony has provided the best quality of music throughout the years attracting world famous artists, conductors, and top musicians in the country. The tradition of the magnificent quality of music is now threatened by the negotiations of management.

* These difficult negotiations threaten the existence of the Detroit Symphony as one of the to top in the ranking of American symphony orchestras. Contract expires August 29.

* Management demands that musicians take a salary cut of 28%, drastic cuts in their health insurance, reduction in size of orchestra, and elimination of contribution to retirement benefits.

* In 2001, the orchestra had been reduced from 95 onstage musicians to 85 with foreseeable reductions in the future. These cuts will damage the perception of the quality of music that was once expected.

* In past concessionary contracts the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Musicians made $3.4 million in concessions and agreed to cuts in pay and benefits. These contracts resulted in restoration of their top ranking status in Top 10 American symphony orchestras. Management's current proposal will make these cuts permanent with no hope for restoration or regaining a top spot in the rankings of American symphony orchestras.

* The Detroit Symphony musicians offered to swallow cuts to help bail out management and proposed a $9 million cut in salary and benefits, cuts of 22% in next year's annual scale, 14% in 2012, and 8% in 2013.

* Management has rejected the multimillions in concessions by the musicians, flatly refuses to negotiate, and proposed these cuts become permanent, jeopardizing the orchestra to regain a top ten position within the American symphony orchestras.

* Problems with management go beyond the issues with the current economy. Their issues vary from determining how to market and present the orchestra, to having an unending turnover in the development department.

* In the past 40 years management has been responsible for losses such as the Meadow Brooks Music Festival, 8 weeks of free concerts at Belle Isle, and a 4-year tenure at Vail Colorado Music Festival. These promotional events were very successful and with the loss of these events contributed to a loss of audience.

* The Detroit Symphony Orchestra encourages supporters to write to DSO Chairman of the Board Stanley Frankel to assist in saving the orchestra at:  Musicians of the Detroit Symphony, 20833 Southfield Road, Southfield, MI  48075 or via email at: stanleyfrankel@detroitsymphonymusicians.org.

* Metro Detroit AFL-CIO's President, Saundra L. Williams has invited the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Federation of Musicians to lead the Labor Day Parade on September 6, 2010 in hopes of saving and supporting the orchestra.

* The Labor Day Parade will be a continued effort to bring attention to the importance of union workers and the high level of skill and tradition associated with union musicians.

Poet Dottie Grossman and Trombonist Michael Vlatkovich, 8/20
Broadway Music School Presents:
Poet Dottie Grossman and Trombonist Michael Vlatkovich perform 'Call and Response' poetry and trombone improvisation.  Friday, August 20 · 7:30pm

This format solves the problem of one medium overshadowing the other, plus, says Grossman, "it avoids the old 'jazz and poetry' trap, with its cliché-ridden stereotype of angry, beret-wearing, bongo-playing bohemians." Their CD, "Call And Response," on the pfMentum label, represents the duo in live performance mode. You can hear excerpts of the CD ("Call & Response") online at pfmentum.com.  Click on "Artists" and scroll down to Michael Vlatkovich/Dottie Grossman.

On Saturday Aug 21, I'll be playing a solo concert at Swallow Hill, Yale and Broadway, at 8PM...this is a CD release for my new disc "Fretless," a comp

ilation of fretless pieces from my previous CD's. I will of course be playing acoustic and electric fretless axes, as well as 19 and 34 tone guitars...and will be winging it as usual, so no telling what else will happen. I usually play blues and jazz around town, but this will feature my original compositions, so hoping you'll be there.

Then, Monday Aug 23, I'll be on KGNU's "Present Edge" show, hosted by Thomas Lenk   (88.5 FM/1390 AM/kgnu.org), at 10 PM, Denver time, talking about tuning theory, microtones, fretless/micro guitars, Bach tunings, and much more, as well as playing all sorts of unusual micro music...hope you can listen in, promise you a unique listening experience.

Call for GBYO brass musicians
Dear music teachers,

We're very excited that many people are showing a great deal of interest in the new Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras, and we've already received more than 150 audition applications. However, we're light on brass, especially low brass. We have trumpet players, but need horns, trombones, and tuba.
We are only a few brass players away from assembling a full orchestra, and I hope you'll join me in seeking out talented and enthusiastic brass students to work with Maestro Gary Lewis, the artistic staff, and the GBYO mentoring program in this inaugural season. It promises to be a tremendous year full of wonderful opportunities.
I'd also like to remind you at this time that all GBYO musicians are required to participate in their parallel school music ensemble and take private lessons.
More about our programs and conductors, and an audition application, can be found online at www.greaterboulderyo.org and I'd certainly be more than happy to talk with you about the coming year.

Thanks!
Brian Jack

Congas for Sale - I am downsizing my gear and have decided to sell my almost new Toca Traditional congas!  It is a set of 3: 11" quinto, 11 3/4" conga, and 12 1/2" tumba, each with a bag!  They are the natural oak finish drums, with near new heads!  I have only used them for recording sessions, since I have fiberglass drums for live gigs.  I am willing to sell the set for $600, which is far below the cost of a new set of pro drums.  Please call or email if you or someone you know is interested!  I am attaching a photo of the drums from Toca's web site.

Thanks for your help, and have a blessed day!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
