A letter from the Musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
August 9, 2010

The musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra are urgently requesting the assistance of all ICSOM musicians both for our orchestra and your orchestra.  The Detroit Symphony is experiencing a vicious attack from our management, and we are convinced this attack represents, symbolically at least, a test case motivated by the more regressive elements within the League of American Orchestras (formerly ASOL, the American Symphony Orchestra League).
Our management is exploiting financial difficulties caused not only by the hard-hit Michigan economy, but also by conspicuous fiscal errors of their own doing, as a reason to propose degradations which include:  salary cuts of nearly 30%, a termination of pension plans, a severe downgrading of health benefits, reducing a traditional 52-week season to 39 weeks, eliminating 14 musicians from required orchestra size, eliminating payment for all electronic media services, and adding a contractual service-conversion clause by which musicians can be required to perform even non-musical duties as part of their employment and the abolishment of tenure altogether. Beautiful Orchestra Hall - Without a Symphony.
Our current contract expires on August 29th.  In negotiations thus far management has been completely unwilling to bargain or to adjust their position in any direction but downward.  The future is most uncertain.  One of our top managers has said, "The Detroit Symphony Orchestra as we have known it will be no more."
It is our sincere belief that, to the extent that the Detroit management is successful in attaining their objectives, the road to similar attempts by other orchestras' managements will be less obstructed and more smoothly paved.

Please help us and help your own orchestra by:
     1) Signing up as many potentially concerned people (students, extended family members, friends sympathetic to musicians) as possible to our electronic newsletter.  This listing absolutely will not be used for any purpose other than group emails in support of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and other member orchestras.  If each and every ICSOM musician will add 5-10 names to our contact list, our cause will be tremendously more effective.  The few minutes it takes is an investment in professional orchestral music in America.
To sign up anyone with their email address, go to our website:
http://detroitsymphonymusicians.org/ and scroll to the bottom left margin of the home page, and click on:  Sign up for our eNews.

     2) Friend us on Social Media, especially Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Linkedin, and allow as many people to friend you as possible.

     3) Direct as many people as possible to our webite.

A million thanks from the musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra!

On Saturday Aug 21, I'll be playing a solo concert at Swallow Hill, Yale and Broadway, at 8PM...this is a CD release for my new disc "Fretless," a compilation of fretless pieces from my previous CD's. I will of course be playing acoustic and electric fretless axes, as well as 19 and 34 tone guitars...and will be winging it as usual, so no telling what else will happen. I usually play blues and jazz around town, but this will feature my original compositions, so hoping you'll be there.

Then, Monday Aug 23, I'll be on KGNU's "Present Edge" show, hosted by Thomas Lenk   (88.5 FM/1390 AM/kgnu.org), at 10 PM, Denver time, talking about tuning theory, microtones, fretless/micro guitars, Bach tunings, and much more, as well as playing all sorts of unusual micro music...hope you can listen in, promise you a unique listening experience.

One of MJO's missions is to support jazz in the schools and this program, in our 6th year, continues to be wildly successful. Reservation ALWAYS recommended at Dazzle (303-839-5100).      We're very excited that many people are showing a great deal of interest in the new Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras, and we've already received more than 150 audition applications. However, we're light on brass, especially low brass. We have trumpet players, but need horns, trombones, and tuba.
We are only a few brass players away from assembling a full orchestra, and I hope you'll join me in seeking out talented and enthusiastic brass students to work with Maestro Gary Lewis, the artistic staff, and the GBYO mentoring program in this inaugural season. It promises to be a tremendous year full of wonderful opportunities.
I'd also like to remind you at this time that all GBYO musicians are required to participate in their parallel school music ensemble and take private lessons.
More about our programs and conductors, and an audition application, can be found online at www.greaterboulderyo.org and I'd certainly be more than happy to talk with you about the coming year.

Thanks!

Congas for Sale - I am downsizing my gear and have decided to sell my almost new Toca Traditional congas!  It is a set of 3: 11" quinto, 11 3/4" conga, and 12 1/2" tumba, each with a bag!  They are the natural oak finish drums, with near new heads!  I have only used them for recording sessions, since I have fiberglass drums for live gigs.  I am willing to sell the set for $600, which is far below the cost of a new set of pro drums.  Please call or email if you or someone you know is interested!  I am attaching a photo of the drums from Toca's web site.

Thanks for your help, and have a blessed day!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
