A letter from the Musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
| August 9, 2010
The musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra are urgently requesting the assistance of all ICSOM musicians both for our orchestra and your orchestra. The Detroit Symphony is experiencing a vicious attack from our management, and we are convinced this attack represents, symbolically at least, a test case motivated by the more regressive elements within the League of American Orchestras (formerly ASOL, the American Symphony Orchestra League). Our management is exploiting financial difficulties caused not only by the hard-hit Michigan economy, but also by conspicuous fiscal errors of their own doing, as a reason to propose degradations which include: salary cuts of nearly 30%, a termination of pension plans, a severe downgrading of health benefits, reducing a traditional 52-week season to 39 weeks, eliminating 14 musicians from required orchestra size, eliminating payment for all electronic media services, and adding a contractual service-conversion clause by which musicians can be required to perform even non-musical duties as part of their employment and the abolishment of tenure altogether. Beautiful Orchestra Hall - Without a Symphony. Our current contract expires on August 29th. In negotiations thus far management has been completely unwilling to bargain or to adjust their position in any direction but downward. The future is most uncertain. One of our top managers has said, "The Detroit Symphony Orchestra as we have known it will be no more." It is our sincere belief that, to the extent that the Detroit management is successful in attaining their objectives, the road to similar attempts by other orchestras' managements will be less obstructed and more smoothly paved. Please help us and help your own orchestra by: 1) Signing up as many potentially concerned people (students, extended family members, friends sympathetic to musicians) as possible to our electronic newsletter. This listing absolutely will not be used for any purpose other than group emails in support of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and other member orchestras. If each and every ICSOM musician will add 5-10 names to our contact list, our cause will be tremendously more effective. The few minutes it takes is an investment in professional orchestral music in America. To sign up anyone with their email address, go to our website: http://detroitsymphonymusicians.org/ and scroll to the bottom left margin of the home page, and click on: Sign up for our eNews. 2) Friend us on Social Media, especially Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Linkedin, and allow as many people to friend you as possible.
3) Direct as many people as possible to our webite. A million thanks from the musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra! More Info |

"Attention shoppers! Can I get a price check on a cellist?"
Tom Jensen, JSG Music Director |
The Whole Foods store in the Streets at Southglenn (University and
Arapahoe) will be donating 5% of all sales this
Wednesday August 11th to the Junior Symphony Guild's "Inside the
Orchestra" programs-- benifiting the DMA musicians who make up the
ensemble. This is part of Whole Foods' Community Giving Day-- and is at the
Southglenn store only. Student pianists who perform with the orchestra will be giving a recital
throughout the day and Music Director Tom Jensen will be helping "bag groceries"
in white tie and tails. KUSA channel 9's Kirk Montgomery will be there to film a piece for their 4P
newscast. This is a great way to help fund our local musicians while buying food that
you need anyway! So come out and support the JSG and your DMA musicians this Wednesday
August 11!

Call for GBYO brass musicians
|
Dear music teachers,
We're very excited that many people are showing a great deal of interest in
the new Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras, and we've already received more than
150 audition applications. However, we're light on brass, especially low brass.
We have trumpet players, but need horns, trombones, and tuba.
We are only a few brass players away from assembling a full orchestra, and
I hope you'll join me in seeking out talented and enthusiastic brass students to
work with Maestro Gary
Lewis, the artistic staff, and the GBYO mentoring program in this inaugural
season. It promises to be a tremendous year full of wonderful
opportunities.
I'd also like to remind you at this time that all GBYO musicians are
required to participate in their parallel school music ensemble and take private
lessons.
More about our programs and conductors, and an audition
application, can be found online at www.greaterboulderyo.org
and I'd certainly be more than happy to talk with you about the coming
year.
Thanks!
Brian Jack
Executive Director, GBYO

Congas for Sale - I am downsizing my gear and have decided to sell my almost
new Toca Traditional congas! It is a set of 3: 11" quinto, 11 3/4" conga, and
12 1/2" tumba, each with a bag! They are the natural oak finish drums, with
near new heads! I have only used them for recording sessions, since I have
fiberglass drums for live gigs. I am willing to sell the set for $600, which is
far below the cost of a new set of pro drums. Please call or email if you or
someone you know is interested! I am attaching a photo of the drums from Toca's
web site.
Thanks for your help, and have a blessed day! --

Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the
first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in
band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the
flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax
before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25

members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order
