Detroit Symphony Musicians Leave Stage, Ask for Support
As Season Ends, Detroit Symphony Musicians Leave Stage, Go Into Audience to Deliver Message, Ask for Support

Detroit Federation of Musicians
August 2, 2010 9:41am EDT

DETROIT, Aug. 2 - /PRNewswire/ -- Just before the start of each of their three season-ending programs, members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra left the stage at the Meadow Brook Music Festival and went into the audience to pass out cards asking for support.

Empty Stage
DSO musicians leave the stage to ask audience members to write DSO Board Chairman
Detroit Symphony Orchestra
"With contract negotiations rocky at best, we wanted the audience to know that the level of quality, the richness, the sound and style of this great orchestra were being threatened," said principal trombonist Kenneth Thompkins. "Management's demands drop this orchestra -- an orchestra we're all proud of -- right out of the rankings of the top ten American symphony orchestras, and with no possibility of restoring that ranking. If that happens, we will not be able to continue attracting the best musicians. Our audiences may no longer continue to enjoy the world-famous guest conductors and artists who perform with top ten orchestras.
"We're asking the public to help save this orchestra every one of us loves -- an orchestra that enriches our lives and makes us proud, an orchestra that brings us recognition worldwide. We want the people to continue hearing great symphonic music at the level of quality they are used to and deserve," Thompkins said.
"We want them to know that management refuses to negotiate. Not budging from its demands but merely repackaging them is not negotiating. The musicians look forward to honest negotiations -- not charades from management -- to arrive at a contract that guarantees the eventual restoration of our status as one of America's top ten symphonic orchestras.
"We know the problems. We've offered to swallow cuts of 22% in next year's annual scale, 14% in 2012, and 8% in 2013 -- $9 million in concessions -- to help bail out management and save the orchestra. Our proposal was flatly rejected," Thompkins said.
"That's after making $3.4 million in concessions the past two contracts. At least, past concessionary contracts contained a final-year restoration of our ranking to the top ten American symphony orchestras in America. Management's current proposal makes the cuts permanent, thus eliminating any possibility of the orchestra regaining its position among the top ten.
"It's not just the economy that's the problem," Thompkins said. "It's the many management problems that have to be fixed -- problems that range from an unending turnover in the development department, to resolving how to present and market the orchestra and Orchestra Hall, rebuilding a donor base that has been allowed to plummet, and abandoning its strategic plan."

SCFD Meeting Highlights Reveal Growth in Sales Revenues
The July 22, 2010 SCFD board meeting was hosted by Opera Colorado at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.
The Scientific and Cultural Collaborative and six of the 24 Tier II organizations presented their annual certification reports to the SCFD board. Each presentation was followed by Board member questions. The remaining 18 organizations will present at the August Boardmeeting.
SCFD Treasurer Joseph Arcese reported that the May 2010 SCFD sales and use tax revenue was $3,503,471.24. This compares to May 2009 revenue of $3,121,401.32, which is a 12.24% increase over month-to-date (MTD) May 2009. This is the seventh consecutive month of MTD increases.
The 2010 year-to-date (YTD) sales and use tax revenue is $15,565,934.18. This compares to YTD 2009 revenue of $14,498,981.32, which is a 7.35% increase in YTD 2010 over YTD 2009.
SCFD Executive Director Peg Long reported that the May tax distribution included a deduction of $3,136.30 for its share of the direct and indirect costs the Department of Revenue incurred for extending the SB 09-275 vendor fee revenue to RTD, SCFD and the Stadium District.
As follow-up to a previous Board discussion, Ms. Long reviewed the current grants administration work flow process and compared it to the projected work flow process using an Internet-based grants management and database system. Following an explanation of costs, system functions and efficiencies, and a question and answer session, the Board unanimously approved a contract with the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF) for the GO™ Grants Online system to be launched in 2011.   SCFD Logo
The next regular SCFD Board meeting is scheduled for 1pm Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the Center for the Arts in Evergreen, 32003 Ellingwood Trail, Evergreen, CO 80439.

Master NY jazz guitarist and educator Joshua Breakstone at BMS! 8/6 & 8/7
Joshua Breakstone
Joshua Breakstone
Concert: 7:30 PM, Friday, August 6th -Guitarist Joshua Breakstone will perform with Bijoux Barbosa on bass.  "His flowing lines on up-tempo cookers are impeccably clean and fiery, bearing the mark of a first-rate improviser, while his chordal work on heartbreaker ballads is the final word in finesse," has raved Guitar Player magazine. Downbeat has written that "There is no shortage of young, knock-out jazz guitarists about us these days. And Joshua Breakstone is among the best of them." Joshua has been recording albums as a leader since the 70's and teaching jazz at colleges around the world.

Workshop: 1:00-3:00 PM, Saturday, August 7th - "Saying it: How to Develop Your own Voice for Soloing"

From Joshua: The dynamics we use in speaking are literally the same dynamics which allow us to communicate on a deep level and in a unique way in music. We'll explore applying the dynamics of the voice- the dynamics of speech- to jazz improvisation and see how each of us can use these dynamics in a personal way to develop a unique voice.

All this and much more will be touched on, including historical references, ideas about repertoire, practicing, the traps and pitfalls intrinsic to your instrument itself, how to listen to jazz, the functioning of the rhythm section, etc.

Examples will be demonstrated and, hopefully, workshop participants will participate as well- bring your instruments!

Celebrating its inaugural year with the 2010-2011 season, this new organization is under the musical leadership of Gary Lewis, the Director of Orchestral Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Working with him is an amazing artistic staff comprised of Emily Bowman, Keynes Chen, Erik Johnson, and Paul Rowinski. Combining the best of the Boulder Youth Symphony and the High Plains Youth Symphony, the former leading youth orchestras of Boulder, GBYO will propel young musicians of the Boulder-Denver area to the next level of musical greatness, performing significant orchestral repertoire in addition to creating other opportunities to perform and learn about music.

Auditions for this impressive new organization will be held August 21 and 22, 2010. Interested students may sign up for auditions online at this time, on our website. More information about us is attached, and available online.

We would love to be included on your websites, and encourage you to pass along this information to as many people as possible. For more information about us, please visit our website or, better yet, give me a call - I'd love to talk with you about GBYO.

All of us at the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras are very excited about the coming year, and look forward to working with you!

Congas for Sale - I am downsizing my gear and have decided to sell my almost new Toca Traditional congas!  It is a set of 3: 11" quinto, 11 3/4" conga, and 12 1/2" tumba, each with a bag!  They are the natural oak finish drums, with near new heads!  I have only used them for recording sessions, since I have fiberglass drums for live gigs.  I am willing to sell the set for $600, which is far below the cost of a new set of pro drums.  Please call or email if you or someone you know is interested!  I am attaching a photo of the drums from Toca's web site.

Thanks for your help, and have a blessed day!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
