New Website Helps Musicians Rate Clubs
| By Matt Plummer, AFM Web Developer and Tech Support Specialist
Matt Plummer | Venuology.com, a new website from the AFM Freelance Services Division, is becoming an important resource for musicians booking gigs at New York City nightclubs and other venues. This service will now expand to Metro Denver. In recent years, musicians have found that even large venues with good crowds are refusing to pay musicians adequately. Bands are often paid solely by audience tips, leaving clubs free to erase live music from their business expenses.Without significant union density, many musicians in indie rock, the downtown scene, jazz, world music, Latin music and country-western are fending for themselves - otherwise known as the D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) model. Clubs benefit from a glut of musicians looking for gigs, and the subsequent race to the bottom. The power dynamic is skewed. For a given club, an owner can choose between multiple bands looking for work. From the band's perspective, they can accept the owner's terms - or let another group take their place. Venuology.com ameliorates this problem. It creates a space where musicians can safely share information about venues. Bands review venues they perform at, writing anonymously about their experience and optionally listing details such as the club's backline, sound quality, room size, whether the club promoted the show and even how much the band was paid. Armed with this information, other groups can make informed choices when negotiating with venues. They know if the venue has ripped off other bands, or if musicians uniformly love playing there. Musicians can see if groups received free drinks or food. They have a general idea of what others were paid, and they know if the venue uses minimum draws to justify denying bands a share of the cover. As musicians get a better look at the big picture of the venue landscape, they may think twice about playing at clubs that are rated poorly - without needing to experience it themselves. When booking musical acts, these clubs will now face a small army of empowered musicians rather than isolated individuals.Indeed, an important goal for the site is to demonstrate the power of collective action, especially to musicians that may not be familiar with the AFM or the labor movement in general. The website is a recruiting tool, a hook to introduce indie musicians to the AFM while providing a genuinely useful service. Venuology.com may also help determine where the pressure points of the music scene lie; the issues most important to indie musicians will become more apparent. Since the 1990's, several organizations have arisen in New York to address problems of compensation, opportunity and community, including the Noise Action Coalition, Take It To The Bridge, RUCMA and Local 802's own Justice for Jazz Artists campaign. Parallel efforts could happen in Denver.Hopefully, Venuology.com will be a useful tool for activists already engaged in a fight to improve working conditions in area clubs. Of course, the most important ingredient of a venue review website is user participation; musicians need to write reviews! Visit Venuology.com and sign up today! It's free and completely anonymous. For comments or questions, contact us at beta@venuology.com, or (917) 229-0238.This article first appeared in the May 2010 issue of Allegro, the newspaper of AFM Local 802. Course in the Alexander Technique - July 19-23
|
The
16th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of
Colorado at Boulder will be held July 19-23, 2010, 9:00 to noon daily. A one
day Intensive will be held July 24, 1-5:00 pm. The 2010 faculty includes Ed
Bilanchone, Carol Boggs, and James Brody.
The Alexander Technique is
a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone
can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to
musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and
specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational
settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a
medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were
recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of
the study and a short film about it can be found at:

Massage therapy tailored to instrument-specific body stress
|
Massage therapy tailored to instrument-specific body stress, mechanics and posture. Modalities include joint range of motion, deep tissue, neuromuscular and heat therapy to increase circulation, flexibility and dexterity, as well as to treat carpal tunnel and thoracic outlet symptoms. Centrally located in City Park West, near downtown. Call Glenn 303.618.5990 or Lachlan 303.618.5240 for appointments and info, or email Therapy1657@yahoo.com.
DMA harpist Don Hilsberg's endorsement for Glenn and Lachlan: I am a client of theirs and wanted to share their specific practice with other DMA members.
Glenn and Lachlan are serious practitioners of their art. They have a genuine interest in their client and the individual circumstances related to performing on his or her specific instrument. After careful study of the individual's performing posture, etc., a thorough plan of therapy is introduced. Careful explanations are always provided during therapy sessions, allowing the client to further understand their own body and how all of the muscle groups are interconnected and related to that individual's performance art. Flexible sessions and rates are most appreciated!

Guidestar: "300,000 nonprofits may lose their tax-exempt status"
|
On May 17, 2010, the IRS began revoking tax-exempt status from nonprofits
that failed to file three consecutive annual returns (Form 990-N, 990-EZ, 990,
or 990-PF). As a result, as many as 300,000 nonprofits may lose their tax-exempt
status, effectively shrinking the nonprofit sector by 25%. What do YOU need to know?
Which nonprofits are at risk?
What happens to a nonprofit that loses its exemption?
What happens if a donor gives to a charity that has lost its
exemption?
GuideStar's new report, "Automatic Revocation of Nonprofits' Tax-Exempt Status: What Nonprofits, Grantmakers, and Donors Need to Know," answers all of these questions, and more. Written by
Linda M. Lampkin of ERI Economic Research Institute, it is a no-nonsense
overview of the impact of this earthshaking development in the nonprofit
world.

Congas for Sale - I am downsizing my gear and have decided to sell my almost
new Toca Traditional congas! It is a set of 3: 11" quinto, 11 3/4" conga, and
12 1/2" tumba, each with a bag! They are the natural oak finish drums, with
near new heads! I have only used them for recording sessions, since I have
fiberglass drums for live gigs. I am willing to sell the set for $600, which is
far below the cost of a new set of pro drums. Please call or email if you or
someone you know is interested! I am attaching a photo of the drums from Toca's
web site.
Thanks for your help, and have a blessed day! --

Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the
first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in
band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the
flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax
before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25

amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and
changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is

premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the
cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts
(i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students
in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance
involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra
members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order
