Creatures From The bp Lagoon
Gulf Coast RecOILs from Bad Pollution
by Ken Davies

Ken Davies
Ken Davies
It wasn't that long ago (2005) when hurricane Katrina washed an average of six blocks of buildings off the entire 80 mile coast of Mississippi. We'll still be rebuilding for another ten years while also recovering from insurance extortion, Wall Street bailouts and its effects on home values, and now recOILing from the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. Thanks to BP, our "Redneck Riviera" is moving toward becoming a "Wretched Riviera."

It has all been like a horror movie unfolding ever so slowly. Anxiety and despair mount daily as one awaits each next troubling physical, chemical, economic, social or political creature to emerge from this lagoon.  You can follow local Mississippi news headlines. Disturbing are the pictures of shores and marshes soaked with oil.  These will take generations to recover just like the Alaskan shores, which have still not recovered from Exxon Valdez. There are confirmed reports of BP, sometimes with official assistance, preventing journalists and photographers from gaining access to the areas.  But they got there anyway.  Heart breaking are the photos and videos of oil covered wildlife struggling to escape the slimy muck.  Over 350 pictures of Gulf oil devastation and its effects can be seen at huffingtonpost.com.

There has also been such an abundance of political finger pointing and side-taking across the media that folks outside this area are starting to forget that not only hundreds of thousands of residents are being adversely affected, but also 11 oil rig workers were killed out there because BP took shortcuts on safety.

Gee, Officer Krupke, I Need Those Violins
By PAUL WOODIEL
NY Times
Published: July 9, 2010

I have been fortunate enough to have had a rich and varied career as a theater musician. I've toured the world as the fiddle on the proverbial roof, sweltered in a marching band uniform in "The Music Man" and played a languid tango in Norma Desmond's mansion on Sunset Boulevard. Last year, the stars aligned, allowing me to perform "West Side Story" again, this time at the Palace Theater on Broadway.

Now, after 500 performances, our producers have told us and our union that in order to cut costs they will chop our string section in half, releasing five musicians and "replacing" them with a synthesizer piped in from another room. I don't think Lenny would have approved.

Gil Evans show - Wil Swindler's Elevenet 7/18
Sunday July 18 at 7pm

Will Swindler
Chris Daniels
Legendary jazz composer Gil Evans created some of the most influential and important music of the 20th century.  His unique style has shaped the modern genre of large-ensemble jazz like no one else in history, yet much of his music is rarely performed live anywhere in the world.  Jazz aficionados and jazz musicians alike flock to such performances to hear the rare fruit that is Gil's music live in concert.

On Sunday July 18, Wil Swindler's Elevenet will perform an entire concert featuring the music of Gil Evans at Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge at 7pm.  These beautifully haunting and frequently swinging masterpieces have been prepared for live performance by skilled arranger Wil Swindler.  Swindler recently received the Gil Evans Fellowship, an award given to one jazz composer each year selected from an international field of candidates.  This honor places Swindler alongside previous winners such as Maria Schneider and John Hollenbeck.  "Gil was a huge influence on my music before I was lucky enough to win this award," remarks Swindler.  "I am even more honored by the fact that I can bring Gil's music back to the stage and to the ears of the jazz audience in Denver."  The concert will feature music from the Gil Evans/Miles Davis collaborations, Birth of the Cool, Miles Ahead, Sketches of Spain, Porgy and Bess and more!

Performing the music is Swindler's group, the Elevenet.  Very few groups in the world have the instrumentation and skill to tackle Gil's special style of art-music, but the Elevenet has proven it is up to the task.  This is the 3rd annual concert of Evans' music presented by this group of jazz and classical musicians and one of a series of concerts of modern music the group has presented in the last 3 years.  Featured musicians for this performance include Gabe Mervine, Darren Kramer, Wil Swindler, Ricky Sweum and Todd Reid.  For more info, visit www.jazz11.com or www.wilswindler.com

Course in the Alexander Technique - July 19-23
The 16th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 19-23, 2010, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 24, 1-5:00 pm. The 2010 faculty includes Ed
Bilanchone, Carol Boggs, and James Brody.

The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about
generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were
recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/337/aug19_2/a884.

DMA harpist Don Hilsberg's endorsement for Glenn and Lachlan:
I am a client of theirs and wanted to share their specific practice with other DMA members.

Glenn and Lachlan are serious practitioners of their art.  They have a genuine interest in their client and the individual circumstances related to performing on his or her specific instrument.  After careful study of the individual's performing posture, etc.,  a thorough plan of therapy is introduced.  Careful explanations are always provided during therapy sessions, allowing the client to further understand their own body and how all of the muscle groups are interconnected and related to that individual's performance art.  Flexible sessions and rates are most appreciated!

Restoring a Hallowed Vision
By BOB HERBERT
NY Times
Published: July 9, 2010

Bob Herbert
Bob Herbert
In April 1968, the same month that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed in Memphis, where he had gone to support striking sanitation workers, the president of the powerful auto workers' union, Walter Reuther, traveled to Memphis to give the strikers critically needed financial support.

The sanitation workers were black. In his biography of Reuther, Nelson Lichtenstein noted that the check he handed over to the strikers was the largest outside contribution that they would receive. Some officials at the United Automobile Workers headquarters in Detroit were taken aback. "But Reuther forged ahead," Lichtenstein wrote, "offering an impassioned defense of interracial solidarity."

Three-thousand delegates to the U.A.W. convention later that year heard Reuther say: "We laid $50,000 on the line to demonstrate we meant business. Who helped us back in 1936 and 1937 when we were being beaten up and shot at, when our offices and our cars were being blown up by the gangsters hired by the corporations?

"Who helped us? The coal miners ... the clothing workers ... as long as I am identified with the leadership of this great union, we are going to extend a hand of solidarity to every group of workers who are struggling for justice."

Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras

We are excited to introduce the Greater Boulder Youth Orchetras, the premiere youth orchestra experience in the greater Boulder area!

Celebrating its inaugural year with the 2010-2011 season, this new organization is under the musical leadership of Gary Lewis, the Director of Orchestral Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Working with him is an amazing artistic staff comprised of Emily Bowman, Keynes Chen, Erik Johnson, and Paul Rowinski. Combining the best of the Boulder Youth Symphony and the High Plains Youth Symphony, the former leading youth orchestras of Boulder, GBYO will propel young musicians of the Boulder-Denver area to the next level of musical greatness, performing significant orchestral repertoire in addition to creating other opportunities to perform and learn about music.

Auditions for this impressive new organization will be held August 21 and 22, 2010. Interested students may sign up for auditions online at this time, on our website. More information about us is attached, and available online.

We would love to be included on your websites, and encourage you to pass along this information to as many people as possible. For more information about us, please visit our website or, better yet, give me a call - I'd love to talk with you about GBYO.

All of us at the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras are very excited about the coming year, and look forward to working with you!

Congas for Sale - I am downsizing my gear and have decided to sell my almost new Toca Traditional congas!  It is a set of 3: 11" quinto, 11 3/4" conga, and 12 1/2" tumba, each with a bag!  They are the natural oak finish drums, with near new heads!  I have only used them for recording sessions, since I have fiberglass drums for live gigs.  I am willing to sell the set for $600, which is far below the cost of a new set of pro drums.  Please call or email if you or someone you know is interested!  I am attaching a photo of the drums from Toca's web site.

Thanks for your help, and have a blessed day!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
