Richardson Symphony Placed on Unfair List
| RICHARDSON SYMPHONY, INC. REPUDIATED MUSICIANS'
UNION CONTRACT UNION WILL PICKET AND LEAFLET ALL RSO
SERVICES
WHO: Dallas-Fort Worth Professional Musicians Association,
affiliated Local 72-147 of the American Federation of Musicians, which
represents more than 1700 professional musicians across North Texas and Southern
Oklahoma, including musicians of the Dallas and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras,
The Dallas Opera Orchestra and the Richardson Symphony Orchestra.
WHAT: The
Richardson Symphony, Inc. has been placed on the International Unfair List of
the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada.
WHY:
RSO President Jim Pierce announced July 1 that RSO would not negotiate a new
contract with the musicians' union. RSO has contracted with the union since
1992. The current contract expires August 31, 2010. Management called a June 30
orchestra meeting at Pierce's Alliance Data office in Richardson, purportedly to
discuss "structural changes" in operations, but Union reps Ray Hair, Karen
Schnackenberg and Principal trumpeter Bert Truax were barred by a sheriff's
deputy who called Dallas Police to the scene. Police, acting on RSO's orders,
escorted the reps and Truax from the property despite an agreement designating
Local 72-147 as the orchestra's representative. RSO members in attendance
reported that management officials said the meeting was called to advise that it
would refuse to negotiate further with the union upon expiration of the existing
contract. RSO's actions prompted the union to place RSO upon the AFM's
International Unfair list, which triggers the possibility of fines of up to
$50,000 and/or expulsion for AFM members who work for or with RSO. AFM
represents 90,000 professional musicians across the US and Canada. Until the
dispute is resolved, musicians will form picket and distribute leaflets to
patrons to encourage them to refrain from attending RSO services. RSO members
leafleted concertgoers at a May 8 performance to protest management's late wage
payments, chronically delinquent for most concerts over the past two years. A
clip of Conductor Anshel Brusilow's abusive rant aimed at principal trumpeter
Bert Truax who protested RSO's shabby treatment toward the orchestra, drew
worldwide attention to the orchestra's struggle to get paid on time and to
rehearse and perform with without insult. For further information, contact
Local 72-147 President Ray Hair at (Metro) 817-469-6040 or 817-988-5238

Gil Evans show - Wil Swindler's Elevenet 7/18
| Sunday July 18 at 7pm
Will Swindler
 | Legendary jazz composer Gil Evans created some of the most influential and important music of the 20th century. His unique style has shaped the modern genre of large-ensemble jazz like no one else in history, yet much of his music is rarely performed live anywhere in the world. Jazz aficionados and jazz musicians alike flock to such performances to hear the rare fruit that is Gil's music live in concert.
On Sunday July 18, Wil Swindler's Elevenet will perform an entire concert featuring the music of Gil Evans at Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge at 7pm. These beautifully haunting and frequently swinging masterpieces have been prepared for live performance by skilled arranger Wil Swindler. Swindler recently received the Gil Evans Fellowship, an award given to one jazz composer each year selected from an international field of candidates. This honor places Swindler alongside previous winners such as Maria Schneider and John Hollenbeck. "Gil was a huge influence on my music before I was lucky enough to win this award," remarks Swindler. "I am even more honored by the fact that I can bring Gil's music back to the stage and to the ears of the jazz audience in Denver." The concert will feature music from the Gil Evans/Miles Davis collaborations, Birth of the Cool, Miles Ahead, Sketches of Spain, Porgy and Bess and more!
Performing the music is Swindler's group, the Elevenet. Very few groups in the world have the instrumentation and skill to tackle Gil's special style of art-music, but the Elevenet has proven it is up to the task. This is the 3rd annual concert of Evans' music presented by this group of jazz and classical musicians and one of a series of concerts of modern music the group has presented in the last 3 years. Featured musicians for this performance include Gabe Mervine, Darren Kramer, Wil Swindler, Ricky Sweum and Todd Reid. For more info, visit www.jazz11.com or www.wilswindler.com

Course in the Alexander Technique - July 19-23
|
The
16th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of
Colorado at Boulder will be held July 19-23, 2010, 9:00 to noon daily. A one
day Intensive will be held July 24, 1-5:00 pm. The 2010 faculty includes Ed
Bilanchone, Carol Boggs, and James Brody.
The Alexander Technique is
a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone
can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to
musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and
specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational
settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a
medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were
recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of
the study and a short film about it can be found at:

Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the
first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in
band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the
flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax
before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25

in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance
