Calling for AFM Member Recordings
Chris DanielsThe AFM's new online music store, GoPro Tunes (www.goprotunes.com), is now collecting recordings - singles, EPs, or full albums - from AFM members. They want jazz, indie rock, classical, avant-garde, salsa, bluegrass, folk and everything in between!

When the AFM gathers enough music to have a full, diverse catalog, they'll announce GoPro Tunes to the public, selling digital audio files (e.g. MP3s), similar to Apple's iTunes or Amazon MP3. Besides the storefront at www.goprotunes.com, you'll be able to link to your GoPro Tunes page from your own website or social networking profile.

Sign up today! Visit http://www.goprotunes.com/

As an AFM member, you set your own prices, pay no upfront fees and receive back all revenue from your sales, minus only credit card processing fees. This is a value that can't be beat anywhere, including popular services such as CDBaby and Tunecore.

Sending music to GoPro Tunes is quick and easy. With a simple online interface, you can upload your music, cover art and album details, usually with everything approved and ready-to-go within one business day. Best yet, AFM staff is available for assistance every step of the way.

Concerned that you don't have an AFM recording agreement? Don't worry! The AFM's Joint Venture Report was designed with self-producing artists in mind, and they'll be glad to work with you to bring your previous or future recordings under this agreement. Contact them at reach@goprotunes.com for more information.

Don't miss this opportunity to sell your music online. GoPro Tunes is one of many valuable services available to AFM members at no charge. Virtually every other music store is a for-profit entity - not true for the AFM's GoPro Tunes! And you can sell your music anywhere else you'd like; selling music on GoPro Tunes is non-exclusive.

Charleston Symphony Call to Action

CSO proposal would have reduced Musician salaries by 84%

CHARLESTON, SC - The 34 musicians of the Charleston Symphony have overwhelmingly rejected the terms of an Interim Operating Agreement ("IOA") that would have slashed salaries by 84% for the majority of musicians and substantially reduced the Symphony's performances for the 2010-2011 season.
Marty Klaper, Chair of the Bargaining Committee for the CSO Board of Directors, presented the terms of the IOA to musician representatives on May 14. In balloting that took place May 19 and 20, the musicians voted down the proposal, nearly unanimously.   "We anticipated an unpalatable offer," said Players Association representative and spokesperson, Ryan Leveille, "but were completely taken aback by the austerity of this proposal.  We decided to put the terms to the full body of musicians and were not surprised by their overwhelming rejection.  I don't know if the CSOA sincerely believed that it would be able to staff an orchestra for such low wages."

Richardson Symphony Call to Action
Many of you may be aware of the recent unfortunate events at the Richardson Symphony.  After repeatedly waiting weeks and even months to be paid for concerts, the musicians decided to publicize management's failure to pay them under the contract.  They issued a press release and notified the public that they would engage in informational picketing at their May 8 concert.  Orchestra committee chairman and Principal Trumpet, Bert Truax, was quoted in the press release - a suitable action for a union leader in the orchestra.
The musicians' attempt to deal with their workplace problem was protected union activity, and hardly surprising.  But what happened next was shocking, indeed.

Celebrating two monumental works, the CSO performs Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and John Adams' On The Transmigration of Souls, written in honor of those who died on 9/11. These works trace a monumental path through human emotion and existence. Instrumental Music Opportunity

I'm trying to get the word out to people who might be interested in the opportunity to run a fee-based before and after school band and orchestra program in Douglas County.  They currently have an RFP posted (Request for Proposal) for an elementary instrumental music program.  I started such a program this school year in the Rock Canyon feeder area - www.rceim.webs.com.  This was an area that cut their program and laid me off, but then asked if I would consider doing this as my own business.  It is working fairly well for me.  I'm well under what I would have made on a full contract, but it is respectable considering the economy, all the cuts, and the lack of opportunity.  I can still do what I love and it works for being Mom to my little girl.

I'm hoping that you might know some enterprising instrumental music teachers who would be interested in running such a program.  The district is looking for people to take on most likely other individual feeder areas.  I'm attaching the official RFP.  There is a mandatory pre-bid meeting on Tuesday May 11 at 4:00 p.m. - the location is listed in the RFP.

I am passionate about making sure elementary instrumental music doesn't go by the wayside in DCSD, especially when they are very interested in finding some way to continue it.  Please forward to people who you think might be interested. I can also be a potential resource for someone who might like to do this, but might want some help setting it up.

Thank you,
Debbie Davidson-Stanfill

AFM-EPF Pension Rehabilitation Plan
The Pension Protection Act of 2006 requires the funding "zone status" for defined benefit multiemployer plans including the American Federation of Musicians and Employers' Pension Fund (the "Plan") to be certified each year by the plan's actuary.  On April 15, 2010 the actuary for the Plan certified the Plan to be in "critical status" (also known as the "red zone") for the Plan year beginning April 1, 2010.  The significance of entering critical status is that the Plan's Board of Trustees (the "Board") is required by law to adopt a "rehabilitation plan" designed to improve the Plan's financial health and to allow it to emerge from critical status.

On April 15, 2010 the Board adopted a rehabilitation plan (the "Rehabilitation Plan") consistent with this requirement. Click Here for more information.

Time to Review Workplace Reviews?
Time to Review Workplace Reviews?
By TARA PARKER-POPE - NY Times
May 17, 2010

... Samuel A. Culbert, a clinical psychologist who teaches at the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles, says too many people work in a "toxic" environment, and the title of his new book (from Hachette) throws a spotlight on one of the culprits: "Get Rid of the Performance  Review!"

Annual reviews not only create a high level of stress for workers, he argues, but end up making everybody - bosses and subordinates - less effective at their jobs. He says reviews are so subjective - so dependent on the worker's relationship with the boss - as to be meaningless. He says he has heard from countless workers who say their work life was ruined by an unfair review.Click Here for complete story

Moment of Truth for U.S. Productivity Boom
Wall Street Journal
By JUSTIN LAHART

GREENSBORO, N.C.-As the long recession lifts, American businesses are grappling with a big question: Are we working smarter, or simply working harder? The answer will say a lot about the strength of the economy in the coming years.
Fearing for their jobs, American workers are scrambling to produce more for every hour of work. Call it the hustle factor. At the same time, new machinery and new ways of doing things are boosting productivity. Call it the brain factor.
Both forces are at work: Productivity in the fourth quarter 2009 rose 5.8% from a year earlier, the biggest jump since 2002. Unlike recent downturns, when productivity shrank and then rebounded, it kept growing throughout most of the past recession.

Now the question is whether the biggest gains have come from hustle or brains.
An important indicator comes Thursday when the Labor Department releases first-quarter productivity figures. Economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires estimate productivity rose at a 2.5% annual rate, less than half its 6.9% growth rate in the fourth quarter.
Most economists think it will be harder to sustain gains built on working harder. If productivity slows over the coming quarters-say, falling back closer to its 50-year average growth rate of 2.1%-it has big implications. Lower productivity actually should reduce short-term unemployment because companies have to hire more workers to do the same
amount of work.

Colorado Young Sinfonia Auditions - 2010-11 Season
Announces auditions for the 2010-2011 season
May 29/June 5, 2010

All String Players (violin, viola, cello, and double bass) between the ages of 13 and 29 are welcome to audition. Interested woodwind, horn and trumpet players may also audition for our programs that include winds.

The CYS is a chamber orchestra comprised of the finest middle school, high school, collegiate, and young professional string players in the region. We seek a complement of 14 violins, 6 violas, 6 celli, and 3 double basses, but will fill our roster with only the most highly qualified players.

The CYS presents three to four programs each season, with most programs being performed at least twice. This orchestra provides an opportunity to learn repertoire not usually programmed by larger ensembles, and may serve as a unique supplement to a full orchestra experience.

2010-201 repertoire highlights will include: Elgar Introduction and Allegro, Brahms String Quartet in c minor and Mendelssohn String Symphony #9 and our annual baroque program. We will also collaborate with eminent local artists in concerto appearances. Past guest soloists include Linda Wang, Ricardo Iznaola, Alice Rybak, Bil Jackson, Michael Thornton, Lisa Martin , Claude Sim and Eugenia Alikhanova.

For more information, application forms, or to request an audition time, please call 720-371-4145, email bvendryes@msn.com. Auditions may also be made by appointment.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
