Tennessee Flood: Call For Donations
| The entire Nashville community is facing devastating financial, property, and personal losses following the disastrous flooding in the region this past weekend. Many musicians in the area have suffered significant damage to their instruments, recording studios, and homes. Some have lost everything. The ability of these musicians to earn an income has been put on hold as the city tries to rebuild from this catastrophe, with losses for the city estimated at $1 billion. A large amount of economic activity in Nashville revolves around music, and many important venues, including the Schermerhorn Symphony Center and the Grand Ole Opry House, as well as many rehearsal facilities and home studios, have undergone considerable damage or have been destroyed. In 2005, the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) created the Musicians Disaster Relief Fund as a way to distribute funds to musicians in need, and that fund is now coming into play. The AFM encourages all music supporters to make a contribution, and to be a part of the effort to assist afflicted Nashville musicians. "Nashville musicians are invaluable members of the music industry as a whole. The Musicians Disaster Relief Fund will be an essential component in getting them back on their feet and enabling them to continue to create the music that people everywhere enjoy," says AFM International President Thomas F. Lee. One hundred percent of the contributions go directly to the musicians. To donate online, please visit http://www.afm.org/about/donate/help-nashville-musicians. If you prefer to pay by check or money order, please make your contribution payable to "AFM Musicians Disaster Relief Fund" and send it to:
AFM Musicians Disaster Relief Fund 1501 Broadway, Suite 600 New York, NY 10036
If you would like to donate the Local 257 fund instead of, or in addition to, the Federation's Musicians Disaster Relief Fund, you can mail your contribution to AFM Local 257, 11 Music Circle, N., Nashville TN, 37203 or you can make a contribution online at: http://www.nashvillemusicians.org/?pg=donate.

Colorado US Senate race and the Employee Free
Choice Act
| By Thomas A. Blomster
Over the past three weeks I surveyed candidates for current
Colorado US Senator Michael Bennet's seat regarding their position on the
Employee Free Choice Act. I contacted each candidate twice except for Andrew
Romanoff, whose campaign staff responded immediately. Here are the results: Jane Norton, Republican: Automated campaign acknowledgement
of my email request, but Ms. Norton or her campaign office have not responded. Tom Wiens, Republican: No response Ken Buck, Republican: No response
Andrew Romanoff, Democrat (from Melissa Caplan, Romanoff for Colorado): Andrew has endorsed EFCA and also received
the endorsement of The United Food and Commercial Workers, the Colorado Council of Teamsters and the Laborers
International in Colorado Springs.
Michael Bennet, Democrat and current Colorado US Senator: Thank you for
contacting me to express your support for the Employee Free Choice Act. I
appreciate hearing from you.
Workers in Colorado
and across the nation deserve the right to organize and collectively bargain
free from intimidation. In my short time in the United States Senate, I have been a
strong supporter of workers' rights. One of my first votes in the Senate was
for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which provides support for workers
against discrimination based on gender. I have voted against several proposals,
including amendments to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, that would
have seriously undermined the hard-earned rights of working people.
As has been widely reported, the chief sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act,
Senator Tom Harkin, has said there are not enough votes for the original
version of the bill to move forward on the floor of the Senate. Senator Harkin
is actively involved in negotiations to produce a new version of the bill. I
have met with dozens of groups on both sides of this issue, and the concerns I
have discussed with those groups over the past five months are the very issues
that Senator Harkin and others are attempting to address in the negotiations.
I support these efforts to reach a compromise. The question before us as we
move forward is how to preserve the legitimate rights of workers to organize
free from intimidation and the legitimate interest of small business to respond
nimbly during our economic recovery. I am hopeful that the Senate will consider
legislation that achieves both of these important objectives.
Thank you again for contacting me about this important issue. For more
information about my priorities as your United States Senator, I invite you to
visit my website at http://bennet.senate.gov.
Sincerely,
Michael Bennet
United States Senator I hope this survey is helpful to the DMA membership selecting
a candidate. Thomas A. Blomster is vice-president of the Denver Musicians Association

always very exciting. 9 pm to midnight - no cover charge.
On Friday, May 14 the Pete Olstad/Bob Montgomery Big Band will appear at
Dazzle. Our guest soloist will be jazz trumpet great Bobby Shew. Bobby Shew is

shows at 7 and 9 pm. $15 cover charge. On Sunday, May 16 the Pete Olstad/Bob Montgomery Big Band closes the two

Instrumental Music Opportunity
|
I'm trying to get the word out to people who might be interested in the
opportunity to run a fee-based before and after school band and orchestra
program in Douglas County. They currently have an RFP posted (Request for
Proposal) for an elementary instrumental music program. I started such a
program this school year in the Rock Canyon feeder area - www.rceim.webs.com. This was an area that cut
their program and laid me off, but then asked if I would consider doing this as
my own business. It is working fairly well for me. I'm well under what I would
have made on a full contract, but it is respectable considering the economy, all
the cuts, and the lack of opportunity. I can still do what I love and it works
for being Mom to my little girl.
I'm hoping that you might know some enterprising instrumental music
teachers who would be interested in running such a program. The district is
looking for people to take on most likely other individual feeder areas. I'm
attaching the official RFP. There is a mandatory pre-bid meeting on Tuesday May
11 at 4:00 p.m. - the location is listed in the RFP.
I am passionate about making sure elementary instrumental music doesn't go
by the wayside in DCSD, especially when they are very interested in finding some
way to continue it. Please forward to people who you think might be interested. I can also be a potential resource for someone who might like to do this, but
might want some help setting it up.
Thank you, Debbie Davidson-Stanfill |

AFM-EPF Pension Rehabilitation Plan
| The
Pension Protection Act of 2006 requires the funding "zone status" for defined
benefit multiemployer plans including the American Federation of Musicians and
Employers' Pension Fund (the "Plan") to be certified each year by the plan's
actuary. On April 15, 2010 the actuary
for the Plan certified the Plan to be in "critical status" (also known as the
"red zone") for the Plan year beginning April 1, 2010. The significance of entering critical status
is that the Plan's Board of Trustees (the "Board") is required by law to adopt a
"rehabilitation plan" designed to improve the Plan's financial health and to
allow it to emerge from critical status. On April 15, 2010 the
Board adopted a rehabilitation plan (the "Rehabilitation Plan") consistent with
this requirement. Click Here for more information.

Moment of Truth for U.S. Productivity Boom
| Wall Street Journal By JUSTIN LAHART
GREENSBORO, N.C.-As the long recession lifts, American
businesses are grappling with a big question: Are we working smarter, or
simply working harder? The answer will say a lot about the strength
of the economy in the coming years. Fearing for their jobs, American
workers are scrambling to produce more for every hour of work. Call it the
hustle factor. At the same time, new machinery and new ways of doing things
are boosting productivity. Call it the brain factor. Both forces are at work: Productivity in the fourth quarter
2009 rose 5.8% from a year earlier, the biggest jump since 2002. Unlike
recent downturns, when productivity shrank and then rebounded, it kept
growing throughout most of the past recession. Now the question is
whether the biggest gains have come from hustle or brains. An
important indicator comes Thursday when the Labor Department releases
first-quarter productivity figures. Economists polled by Dow Jones
Newswires estimate productivity rose at a 2.5% annual rate, less than
half its 6.9% growth rate in the fourth quarter. Most economists
think it will be harder to sustain gains built on working harder. If
productivity slows over the coming quarters-say, falling back closer to its
50-year average growth rate of 2.1%-it has big implications. Lower
productivity actually should reduce short-term unemployment because
companies have to hire more workers to do the same amount of work. Click Here for complete story

Announces auditions for the 2010-2011 season May 29/June 5, 2010
All String Players (violin, viola, cello, and double bass) between the ages of 13 and 29 are welcome to audition. Interested woodwind, horn and trumpet players may also audition for our programs that include winds.
The CYS is a chamber orchestra comprised of the finest middle school, high school, collegiate, and young professional string players in the region. We seek a complement of 14 violins, 6 violas, 6 celli, and 3 double basses, but will fill our roster with only the most highly qualified players.
The CYS presents three to four programs each season, with most programs being performed at least twice. This orchestra provides an opportunity to learn repertoire not usually programmed by larger ensembles, and may serve as a unique supplement to a full orchestra experience.
2010-201 repertoire highlights will include: Elgar Introduction and Allegro, Brahms String Quartet in c minor and Mendelssohn String Symphony #9 and our annual baroque program. We will also collaborate with eminent local artists in concerto appearances. Past guest soloists include Linda Wang, Ricardo Iznaola, Alice Rybak, Bil Jackson, Michael Thornton, Lisa Martin , Claude Sim and Eugenia Alikhanova.
For more information, application forms, or to request an audition time, please call 720-371-4145, email bvendryes@msn.com. Auditions may also be made by appointment.

Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the
first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in
band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the
flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax
before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25
