AFM Comments to the FCC regarding Network Neutrality
Content freedom, with clear copyright protection, is key to Internet success

The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada submitted comments on April 9, 2010 to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) pertaining to the FCC proceeding to establish rules for an open Internet (network neutrality). The AFM stated that protecting an open Internet while providing protection for copyrighted content should be the end result of the FCC proceeding. The AFM called on the FCC to work with stakeholders to create best practices for ensuring network neutrality and protecting copyrighted content.

"An open Internet is critical to musicians," states AFM International President Thomas F. Lee, "All types of musicians, from artists with established careers to those just getting started, use the Internet to get their music to fans, whether through iTunes, eMusic, Amazon, YouTube, MySpace, or any other website that allows music to be sold or streamed. Ensuring that the Internet remains open, neutral, and free is necessary to guarantee that musicians can make a living playing music."

However, supporting network neutrality does not mean that Internet piracy should be ignored or tolerated. The AFM agrees with FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, when he stated, on September 21, 2009, that "[t]he enforcement of copyright and other laws and the obligations of network openness can and must co-exist." The AFM's comments urge the FCC to write regulations that keep the Internet open, that promote innovation and entrepreneurship, and that protect copyrighted content.
A moment of silence, a note of support
The Upper Big Branch Mine disaster highlights why standing up for workers is so important. When workers are prevented from joining a union and standing up for their rights, companies can get away with ignoring their safety and wellbeing.

Massey Energy, which operated this mine, has been cited for 38,997 safety violations in the last five years. This very mine had received citations for improper methane ventilation.

The unassailable fact is that union mines are much safer than non-union mines. Union miners have representation. They can refuse unsafe work. They can fight for better conditions. They can file grievances, and look out for their union brothers and sisters.

These workers deserved better - and we'll keep fighting to make sure this kind of tragedy never happens again. But right now, I hope you'll join us in letting their families know that you stand with them.

Please, let their families know that you won't forget what happened - and that they have your support.

Thanks so much for all you do.
Sincerely,

Manny, Liz, Doug F., and the American Rights at Workteam

Orff-Carmina burana

Rush, by CU assistant professor Daniel Kellogg, is a high-energy opener to our season finale concert. Christopher Theofanidis' Rainbow Body provides a sublime meditation based on a chant by Hildegard von Bingen, a medieval mystic. Carmina burana's text celebrates the earthly pleasures of wine, food and sex...while the music captivates us with primal chants and insistent, repetitive rhythms. A big production, this concert features a large orchestra and chorus, a children's chorus, and soprano Mary Wilson, tenor William Parsons, and baritone Dennis Jesse as soloists.

Catch a free, 30-minute talk on this concert by Don Campbell, world-renowned author of The Mozart Effect, at 6:30 p.m. at Macky.

Trumka Warns 'Forces of Hate' Fanning Flames of Workers' Economic Anger
April 8, 2010
A failed economy that only seems to work for a privileged few is fueling rising worker anger. In a speech at Harvard University last night, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka warned there are "forces of hate" at work who "seek to divide working people--to turn our anger against each other." The only way to fight the forces of hatred is with a strong progressive movement. Also yesterday, CNN named Trumka one of the "Day's Most Intriguing People."

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
