Alan Frederickson in the mid-1960s with the Queen City Jazz Band
Alan Frederickson
By Jim Cullum

Trombonist Alan Frederickson
died about 10 days ago. I know that some of you cats reading the Jazz Me News didn't know Alan. And your reporter (that's me!) is here to tell you all about him.
Alan said these things, "It's fun to laugh. It's fun to be funny. Kid Ory was the man." And he would grind out a tailgate from a trombone that usually had some dirt in it.
Taking the stage, Alan Frederickson poured out the trombone smears. And, his natural charm and wit and command of clever phrases became magnified. His monologues between his band's numbers and band sets were wonderful to experience. Alan took the dullest, dreariest material, such as the Farmer's Almanac, and just by pauses, a few comments, and quizzical looks upward, Alan worked his hilarity. These things became known as "the reading of the word."

Alan was living in Port Townsend, WA with his wife Juanita Greenwood at the time of his death. Alan is the founder of the Queen City Jazz Band and the Alan Frederickson Jazz Ensemble.

New Scale Changes, effective 7/1/2010

Proposed scale changes were approved at the 3/29 General Membership Meeting. These changes were designed to clarify existing language and practice, and do not affect existing rates.  All changes go into effect July 1 for contracts filed after 3/29.
The DMA is thankful for our members who turned out in sufficient numbers for a necessary quorum. We are also thankful for the time and commitment from Scale Committee members' Ron Bland (chair), Don Prorak, Hank Troy and Thomas Blomster.

Why the music really stopped
Friday, April 2, 2010

Charleston Symphony Orchestra Board President Ted Legasey lays the economic difficulties of the orchestra squarely at the feet of the struggling economy. However, fundraising problems plagued the CSO prior to the recession.
The board of directors has had three different evaluations conducted by outside professionals, and all have pointed to the feeble fundraising approach, namely the multiyear lack of a development director. The most recent report went so far as to say that the community would not support a poorly run orchestra regardless of the size of the CSO's budget.
The central recommendations of these reports have not been put into effect. Furthermore, our base of donors has not been expanded, forcing the CSO to exhaust its top givers, which has predictably led to their hesitation to continue to support the organization at their previous levels.
The musicians have already taken substantial pay cuts three times in the last decade. Each time we were told that our concessions would be a signal to the community that the CSO was getting its house in order and would make it easier to solicit donations.
This obviously has not proven to be the case. In fact, it only seems to have engendered the belief that the musician expenses are the problem rather than the inefficient manner in which the CSO raises funds. How many times can we be asked to make sacrifices to compensate for the deficient planning of others?
We are extremely grateful to our patrons and the community for supporting us through previous crises. If you wish to see this cultural institution preserved, please contact the CSO and let them know that their current course is not an effective solution. Honolulu Symphony promises to emerge smarter, leaner

Pacific Business News (Honolulu) - by Nanea Kalani
Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Three months after filing for bankruptcy protection, the management team behind the Honolulu Symphony Society says it has a plan to emerge as a smarter organization with a reduced budget "that Honolulu can afford."
Symphony management is working on a plan to relaunch the organizationwith a smaller season, or fewer concerts, that "meets the needs of thecommunity" by performing more community outreach and educationalprograms, while maintaining its core of 63 musicians.
"There isdefinitely a demand for live symphonic music here," said KimberlyMiyazawa Frank, chairwoman of the Symphony Society's board ofdirectors. "But we're looking at how we can balance that demand withthe financial reality of putting on music of that caliber. Our businessmodel has historically been focused only on live concert performances."
The symphony filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Dec. 18,2009, saying it was $1 million in debt and lacked funds to keepoperations going.

Quiet Song for Band - Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9 - Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
