Greetings!
The holidays are a joyous time best spent eating delicious food and with our loved ones-- Which often times includes our pets. However, there are many holiday foods and items that should be kept away from our furry friends:
- Alcohol. Alcohol can cause extreme intoxication in dogs and can be deadly. Wine is especially dangerous to dogs because grapes are poisonous to dogs. Cats are not capable of processing alcohol, and when ingested, even one tablespoon has the ability to kill a cat. You should take your pet to the vet or Animal ER immediately if you suspect they have consumed alcohol.
- Holiday plants. Mistletoe, Poinsettias, and Holly can cause gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Mistletoe also has the ability to cause cardiovascular problems. Cats should also avoid lilies because lilies can cause kidney failure.
- Christmas tree water. All pets should not have access to Christmas tree water. It my contain fertilizers which can cause an upset stomach if ingested. Old Christmas tree water can also be a perfect spot for bacterial growth which can cause nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting.
- Antifreeze. Antifreeze has a very appealing taste to pets, but even in very small doses can be deadly to ALL pets. If you suspect your pet has ingested antifreeze call your vet or the Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-4-ANI-HELP right away.
