So which came first, beer or civilization?

Malting, mashing, boiling, and fermenting ... the basic process of brewing beer has remained relatively unchanged for thousands of years.

Using his own gravity-fed brewing system, fabricated of Styrofoam coolers, plastic tubes, sliced kegs, and a propane stove, home brewer Steve Marler of Arlington, Virginia, pursues an activity that has been associated with the beginnings of civilization. (read on)

Meet J.J. Taylor's Newest Craft Team Member: John Spillers

What do you hope to bring to the craft team?

I hope to bring a new perspective to the team after running a bar for 6 years. I think that I have a unique understanding of the business and the area of the state that I work.

What is your favorite beer on a hot summer day?

I am a big fan of New Belgium Brewery's new Somersault. Unfortunately I have not had an opportunity to have it on a hot day because this spring has been so horrible.

Cicerone's Corner: Grilling with Beer!

Now that the nicer weather is here (sort of) the urge to get outside is higher than ever! And I'm willing to bet more than a few of us are itching to fire up that grill! But before you do that...DON'T FORGET THE BEER!!

If you didn't know...and you probably should have...beer is the absolutely best pairing for grilling in the world. I've done scientific tests. OK, no I haven't! BUT, I've done plenty of research!

So, for starters, let's look at what make beer "beer". One of the main things that separates beer from other beverages is the use of malt. Now malt gives beer a large percentage of its flavor amongst other attributes no matter what the style of brew. At the end of the malting process the grain gets kilned to stop germination and growth and stabilize the malt. Depending on what variety of malt is being produced they kiln it for different times. Malt varies from very light roasts all the way to basically burnt and black. All of these will contribute different end results in your beer...duh.
