Arts Council announces two position openings

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Charlotte Fox, Executive Director of the Alaska State Council on the Arts, recently announced her retirement, effective in January, 2012. 

 

The Council is now recruiting for a new Executive Director, based in AnchorageThe Council is a division of the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, governed by an 11 member Council appointed by the Governor. The Executive Director works directly for the Council and manages a staff of five in addition to independent contractors. The agency budget for FY 12 is $1.8 million, comprised of State of Alaska General Funds, the National Endowment for the Arts, and private foundation support.

 

In addition to the specific responsibilitieslisted in the position description,  the Executive Director is relied upon by artists and arts organizations across the state to connect resources with opportunities, facilitate learning across diverse populations and encourage the growth of arts and culture in the state by every means possible. The Executive Director is also expected to balance new ideas to advance the agency's strategic plan with sound leadership which is inclusive of all arts and culture groups in Alaska.

 ARTS EDUCATION MANAGER

The Alaska State Council on the Arts is recruiting for an Arts Education Manager. This position is responsible for the management of all arts education grants and programs, including Artist in Residence, Rasmuson Foundation Cultural Collaborations,the annual high school Poetry Out Loud statewide competition and the Teaching Artist roster. In addition, this position works closely with districts, individuals and the Alaska Arts Education Consortium to advance arts education in Alaska's schools. The position also manages a small presenting and touring grants program. Deadline for applying is August 1. For more information, go to www.eed.state.ak.us/aksca.

 

Governor's Awards for the Arts Nominations Open

The Alaska State Council on the Arts is now accepting nominations for the Governor's Awards for the Arts in the following categories: Margaret Nick Cooke Award for Alaska Native Arts and Languages, Business Leadership, Arts Advocacy, Individual Artist. The nomination and guidelines can be found at www.eed.state.ak.us/aksca. Deadline for nomination is September 1, 2011.  The awards will be presented at the annual Governor's Awards for the Arts and Humanities, 6 pm Wed., Oct. 19 at the Hotel Captain Cook, Anchorage. Nomination information for the Governor's Awards for the Humanities is at www.akhf.org

 

Connie Boochever Artist Fellowships

Applications are now being accepted for the 2011 Connie Boochever Fellowships in  visual and media arts. The highly competitive $2,500 awards is available on a non-matching basis for use by the recipient to support the general advancement of his/her career. Any Alaskan individual artist pursuing his/her art form on an ongoing basis is eligible to apply.  For more information and to apply go to www.callforentry.org and look for Alaska State Council on the Arts: The Connie Boochever Artist Fellowship.

Opportunities for Artists and Arts Organizations

NEA FY12 Grants -  An organization may submit only one application through one of the following FY 2012 Grants for Arts Projects categoriesFor most organizations, these categories represent the full range of funding options for the entire year. Applicants should examine the goal and purposes of their project as well as the review criteria of these categories, and apply to the one category that is most relevant. The Arts Endowment will not transfer applications between categories.

         Art Works: To support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts. Within these areas, innovative projects are strongly encouraged. An organization may request a grant amount from $10,000 to $100,000. (Deadline:  August 11, 2011)
