Behind the Scenes

Many of our jobs look so simple when finally out on the streets.  And we do try to simplify the process, but there is much to be considered with each unique job. Take for example the Kraft Noodle.

Goal: a 20' museum quality noodle statue to be placed at public, landmark locations across the country.

Considerations:
  • Public, street level installations that people would be attracted to and interact with (climb on it)
  • A complicated geometric shape with car quality finish.
  • Easy to install in yet to be determined places, conforming to engineering specs and local ordinances.
  • Oh, and it needs to radiate heat when the temperature drops below 40 degrees.

Atomic designed and fabricated a giant 3-D router to create a consistent and exact radius the entire length of the noodle.

A fiberglass mold was constructed to replicate the final parts.

Fiberglass parts were pulled from the mold and fit with steel frames for structure.

An automotive paint finish and top coat were applied to the surface. All noodles were created in parts for east shipping and installation.

   Flower Power cont'd...

Degree didn't stop at billboards, other elements were included in their Out-of-Home Campaign.

  • 11 Bus Shelters had custom floral rooftops
  • 10 Showcase Shelters were fitted with a framing system that was covered in silk foliage.
  • 35 Phone Kiosks had custom display boxes and a layered cutout for dimension.

       "The Biggest Mac"

Kraft Noodle

This Mac & Cheese noodle will surely fill you up.  Measuring 20' and weighing 9,560 pounds this is no small noodle.  We carved an original out of foam, and used that to create our mold.  With a welded steel armature and an automotive paint finish these noodles were ready for their public debuts.  Newscasts showed many people getting their pictures taken by the noodles.

Swing Batter Batter Swing

On a windy day this batter will swing all day long.
The foam carved batter rotates at the waist and is then powered only by the wind so even with the slightest breeze he tries to hit a home run.  On those days when there is no wind he will return back to his original position.

 The First Signs of Spring

Target Field has real grass, so what about this billboard?  As much as we wanted to have the real thing we had to go with artificial turf.(Growing grass in Minnesota in March is nearly impossible!)  The grass was mounted to panels to ease installation.  Two mannequins and an actual lawnmower were used for the display.

          Mine's Bigger

To create some excitement for the upcoming season of Deadliest Warrior these over-sized weapons were placed in front of Penn Plaza.  The sword measures 25' long and the axe measures in at 23', both were fabricated from steel framing and sheet goods.  To provide an authentic aged appearance many hours were spent faux finishing the props and base.   (Just a little blood adds a realistic touch.)

               Flower Power

Mother Nature makes it look easy but creating giant flowers is no easy task.  The flower petals were printed directly onto sheet goods, router cut and custom shaped.  Each flower was then assembled petal by petal to the frame support system. For more on this campaign see side-bar.
