Executive Director Update

 Cathy

April finds us at the end of our fiscal year and at the end of our three year grant with the state. We have accomplished so much with your help in early care and education. We have enriched the quality of numerous centers and homes in our region. We have offered over  100 hours of continuing education with our provider trainings. We have been fortunate to have given out over 20 continuing education stipends to help providers meet group leader and director qualifications. In health and mental health with the help of our Colorado Trust Grant we have greatly increased the number of children eligible but not insured. We have almost all health providers entering immunizations in the state database for immunizations
and all physicians in our region seeing children are doing the ASQ-SE screening as part of well child checks.  July 1 ,2012 starts our next three year cycle of grants. Bright Futures has applied for a State Systems Building Grant, Expanding Quality for Infants/Toddlers Grant and a School Readiness Grant. We will know by the end of May if we receive all of this funding. I would like to personally thank all regional council members that helped out with the grant process. Enjoy Spring and keep up the good work with our greatest regional natural resource-our young children.

Parents As Teachers Update
Parents as Teachers Program continues to thrive and offer free service to 60 families in our region.  We recently had a visit from our funders in Denver and received glowing feedback for our group connection and home visits.  PAT educators continue to offer developmental screenings and help families get the resources they need.  Parents love the reassurance and developmental facts they received from our educators.   We are able to accept new families in Ouray, Ridgway, Naturita, Nucla and Norwood. Spread the word about this wonderful, free program.
Tip of the Quarter
(as found in the School Readiness Calendar)

Read with your child each day.

Make a reading place for your child.

  • Keep your child's books in a special, easy to reach place.
  • Put a small rug or pillow in this special place.
  • Read with your child in this special place.
  • Talk to your child about how to take care of books.

Give your child different kinds of books to read.

  • Get a library card for your family and visit the library often.
  • Visit the children's section of the library together and pick out books to take home.

Save some time each day to read with your child.

  • Read in a special place. Make sure it is quiet.
  • Hold your child close to you when you read.
  • Help your child to understand that reading is important.
  • Children learn by doing things over and over. Our child may want to read the same book over and over again.

Let your child join in the reading.

  • Before you start reading, let your child look at the pictures. Ask your child to guess what the book is about.
  • Show your child how to read a book (left to right, front to back)
  • Let your child point to the pictures in the book you are reading.
  • After reading a book, ask your child to tell the story again.
