Volume 1, Number  10
August  2012
Greetings!

Summer is in full swing, and while the tennis world quiets down, there is still news to read.

July began with five junior players (under the age of 25) travelling to London for the 2012 Van Alen Cup at Queen's Club. Representing the US was Pat Winthrop (Newport & Captain), Dylan Ward (Philadelphia), Zach Sacks (New York), Clayton Vaughters (Aiken) and Amanda Avedissian (Newport). Unfortunately, for the US team, the UK proved to be a "tad" strong for the US and they won the Cup. Looking on the bright side, all five players benefitted from the stiff international competition and are looking forward to continuing to work on their games. Read on for complete results.

Continuing along the "young vein", The Velvet Rope, for players between the age of 21 and 40 was held in Newport. A mix of competitive tennis and not-to-be-missed social events guaranteed a fun weekend for all.

Coming up in August is the 2012 Pell Cup Doubles. If you are planning to enter, sign up now as it looks to be fully subscribed. Speaking of sell-outs, news from Aiken is that there is a lot of foreign interest in this year's Calhoun Witham Doubles in November. Plan accordingly!

Chicago continues to be the headline story. The court is complete and play has begun! Look for details on the "re-opening" scheduled for the weekend of October 26-28.  Perhaps Chicago's success is sparking other new projects, as there is talk of court projects in The Netherlands and Sydney. Closer to home, Charleston is moving along and Boston is working towards resolving their roof issues.

Finally, read the "Olympic Moment" to find out what happened in London 104 years ago at the 1908 Olympics!

Overall, it was not such a quiet month after all....enjoy the summer.

Sincerely,

Jane Lippincott - Editor

2012 VAN ALEN CUP
Van Alen 2012

The Van Alen Cup was held on July 6 and 7 at Queen's Club in London. A biennial event between the US and the UK, the tournament features top players under the age of 25 for two days of match play. Representing the US were Pat Winthrop (Captain), Dylan Ward, Clayton Vaughters, Zach Sacks and Amanda Avedissian. Although they put up a good effort, the UK proved to be too strong, fielding a team ranging from +0.3 to 13.1. Tough! For complete results.

VELVET ROPE
Velvet Rope 2012

The always-popular Velvet Rope, a doubles competition for players between the age of 21 and 40, was held in Newport, July 20-22. Co-Chairs and founders, Marc Lewinstein and Brian Owens put on a great show for the weekend. After lots of play, both on and off the court, Dan Villiers & Pat Winthrop defeated Brian Owens & Brook Hazelton in the "A" Division, 10/8. In the "B" Division, Peter Bender & Sergio Lopez took top honors defeating Marc Lewinstein & David Little, 10/6.

Look for a full report of all the happenings on and off the court in next month's issue! For complete results.

SYDNEY - A NEW COURT?

The news from "Down Under" is  that there is a possibility of building a court in Sydney. There once was a court in Sydney that unfortunately closed. This would be a brand new facility. For more on Sydney.

AN OLYMPIC MOMENT

Yes, it is true, Court Tennis, or rather Jeu de Paume, was a medal sport at the 1908 Olympics held in London. Eleven players competed in a singles tournament, held at Queen's Club. Jay Gould and Charles Sands represented the US; the remaining nine competitors were from Great Britain.

Gould, the premier American tennis player, won the Gold Medal. He defeated Eustace Mills in the final -  6/5,6/4,6/4. Gould was 19 years and 259 days old.

Real tennis was a demonstration sport at the 1924 Olympics in Paris.

TIPS FROM THE PRO
by Gabe Kinzler

"Practice Time"

After striking the ball I like to keep my head down and stay balanced on my front foot  for two seconds. Although unrealistic in match play it does help stay with the shot longer while in a match.
