| Greetings!
The tennis world quiets down a bit in the summer as players turn their attention to other outdoor pursuits. For the tennis diehards, though, there is no break! June began with a bang, as the US Professional Singles - Schochet Cup, kicked off the summer season in Newport. The 15-person draw was comprised of professionals from around the world, including 5 of the top seven pros.
The weeklong event featured lots of great tennis culminating in the final showdown between defending champion, Camden Riviere, and the current US Open champion, Bryn Sayers. Coming off a nine-month layoff, Riviere took his third consecutive title. Riviere shares some of his winning strategies in this month's "Tip from the Pros".
Tuxedo hosted the annual US Parent Child Doubles, which included an Open Division and a Handicap Division. The month ended with the more casual, but highly competitive Newport Handicap Doubles. For all the details, and of course, the winners, read on!
Coming up in July is the Van Alen Cup, a biennial team event for players under the age of 25, between the US and UK. This year's tournament will be played in London....keep your fingers crossed on July 6 and 7, as our US team comprised of Pat Winthrop, Clayton Vaughters, Zach Sacks, Dylan Ward and Amanda Avedissian prepare for battle!
Later in the month is the Velvet Rope Doubles. While this event traditionally is only open to players between the ages of 21 and 40, this year marks the 10th anniversary of the tournament. To celebrate, all past participants are invited to take part - including those with aluminum joints! Details on the weekend are posted below.
Other stories this month include the popular Top 25 List, a video link from the Wall Street Journal on real tennis and the question of the month - forcing the return of serve past the hazard service line.
Finally, start planning for next season now! Check out the 2012/13 tournament schedule and plan ahead...
In the meantime, stay cool and enjoy July 4th!
Sincerely,

NEWPORT HANDICAP DOUBLES
Once again the Newport Handicap Doubles drew players from around the country and around the world to the National Tennis Club to compete in four divisions. In the B, C & D divisions eight teams per division played in a round robin format with the top two team of each four team group going through to a single elimination semi-final round, with the first place team in each group of four facing off against the second place team in the other group. This effectively meant that even a team that had lost two matches had a chance to go through - in some instances based on the number of games lost and won - and so the level of excitement was high until that last minute of the last match. Given that this is the 10th anniversary of the Running of the Rope, we would like to welcome back all past participants to join in the festivities, especially those who are now superannuated and sporting tin or aluminum joints.
Festivities will commence on Friday evening and will continue on Saturday evening with cocktails and dinner at The Waves hosted by Marc Lewinstein. In between, there will be spirited and fierce competition on the hallowed court at the Newport Casino. For those who remain standing by the Sunday's first light, there will be finals for the Wharton and Faulise divisions played over a Bloody Mary brunch on Sunday morning.
Entry for players will be reasonably priced at $275. This includes a gift and all dinner and cocktails. Players will be guaranteed two matches and may play up to four times over the weekend if successful on court. Players' guests may participate in the aforementioned social events for a charge of $175 per person.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to play in the tournament, your tennis handicap, partner preference and club affiliation, and whether you will be bringing a guest. You may contact the club at 401-849-6672.
Best regards,
Marc Lewinstein and Brian Owens

TIPS FROM THE PRO
by Camden Riviere
Consistency
Consistency, consistency, consistency! The ability to get the ball back into play one more time than your opponent seems to always be understated. Despite the numerous variables to consider in court tennis, surely the first thought should be "just get it over!"
If you struggle with this during matches, I find it always helps to slow yourself down and try to remember the basics of the game....racket back, watch the ball make contact with the strings, head down etc.
