Volume 1, Number 6
April  2012
Greetings!

March was a busy month as players of all ages and abilities competed in a variety of tournaments. New champions were crowned at the US Junior Nationals, US Amateur, Lord Percival Cup, US 40's, and US 50's. Read on for all the details!

Excitement is building for the 2012 World Championship to be held at Queens Club later this month. Steve Virgona, senior professional at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia won the Final Eliminator over Bryn Sayers, giving him the right to challenge Rob Fahey for the World Championship. As of this writing, information on video coverage of the championship was not available. As soon as the information is available, we will post it on the USCTA website and our USCTA Facebook group. In the meantime, be sure to read Jim Zug's interview with Steve Virgona - "Ten Questions for Challenger Steve Virgona." Finally, we wish both Steve and Rob the best of luck in what will be an exciting few days of tennis!

This month, Greg Van Schaack has some fascinating court tennis trivia in the "Referee's Corner"; Barney Tanfield in "Tips from the Pros" writes about the thought process behind hitting targets, the bloggers over on the RTO forums continue their dream sequence, video promos emerge  and an ambassador hosts a political candidate. It's all here...keep reading!

The best part, though, is that there is plenty of tennis in the next few months to satisfy players of all levels! Happy Spring!

Sincerely,

Jane Lippincott - Editor

TIPS FROM THE PRO

For Whom the Bell Tolls

Target striking is, to say the least, one of the most exciting aspects of our game. The idea of having areas on the court that act as a type of goal is unique to nearly all racquet sports (with the exception of Real Tennis's Basque cousins). Targets such as the Grille, Winning Gallery and Dedans seemingly protrude from their respective cavities and almost beg to be attempted. Having the ability to end a point at any given time is a captivating and extremely enticing proposition. The opportunity to both hit and, unfortunately, miss, targets have major implications on all match outcomes. To read the full article, click here.
