The National Tennis Club (NTC) hosted the first event of the 2011/12 court tennis season - the US Junior Doubles playing for the Lieb Cup. An enthusiastic group of players, ranging in age from 8-17, descended upon the club for a weekend of tennis matches and drills, culminating in the finals on Sunday.

THE HADDEN TOMES ROARS

Tuxedo hosted the legendary Hadden Tomes Invitational with the theme of this year's tournament being "The 1920s".  Players donned the appropriate on court attire wearing white pants, long-sleeved white shirts, period sweaters and of course white caps.  In the A Division final, Moroscak/Laukitis def. Carey/McHugh 6/5 0/6 6/3.

H. DICKSON S. BOENNING (1920-2011)

We regret to announce the passing of H. Dickson S. Boenning on Friday, October 28, 2011 at the age of 91.

Many will remember Mr. Boenning as a fierce, but fair competitor on the court. Off the court, he was a generous supporter of all aspects of the game from professionals to juniors. Boenning was inducted into the Court Tennis Hall of Fame in 2005.

Fortunately, for all of us, his spirit lives on - both on and off court. His early leadership of the United States Court Tennis Preservation  Foundation will insure continued growth and preservation of the game. On court, his courteous demeanor will continue to be honored annually by the USCTA through the awarding of the Boenning Sportsmanship Award.

On behalf of the USCTA, the USCTPF and the entire court tennis community, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family.

REFEREE'S CORNER
by Greg Van Schaack

The Referee's Corner will be an instructive, question and answer format to impart knowledge of the game of court tennis to players of all levels.  Initially, the questions will be generally about basic rules, history, nomenclature, conduct and etiquette.  As time goes by we will endeavor to explore more esoteric rules and situations on and perhaps off the court to engage our readers and challenge any preconceived notions.  Feedback will be entirely welcome and readers are encouraged to "stump the referee" with any questions of their own.

In each column we will have various questions.  Some will be of a historic nature, others about rules and still others about etiquette, equipment or players in the game.

TIPS FROM THE PROS
 by Steve Virgona

To serve with greater accuracy and for better control, players should choke up on the grip when serving.

Players should also determine their opponents strengths and weaknesses on the return of serve (for example if they prefer to volley or take the ball off the backwall) and adjust the length of their serve accordingly.

This is likely to create a loose return or racket error from your opponent!
