Destination 2025: Mapping the Course
For Our Kids
On Saturday April 2, 2011, community leaders, parents, teachers, students, principals and school board members will gather for the San Mateo County Children and Youth Summit. Organized by the Peninsula Partnership Leadership Council (PPLC), the half-day summit with the theme, "Destination 2025: Mapping the Course for Our Kids," will begin a community-wide conversation on how to reach better outcomes for the 3-year-olds of today who will graduate from high school in 2025.
Angela Glover Blackwell, founder and CEO of PolicyLink, a national leader for social justice and equity, and a frequent contributor to National Public Radio, will be the keynote speaker. "She will give a call to action," says Larry Best, Executive Director of PPLC. "She'll give examples of how community organizations can come together and coordinate services. Everyone is dealing with budget restraints so we all have to come together and learn how to do things differently."
San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools Anne Campbell is the chair of the PPLC and is working closely with Larry Best, as well as PPLC steering committee members San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Carole Groom and Silicon Valley Community Foundation Vice President for Community Leadership, Erica Wood, on planning the half-day event.

Karen Philip Gets California Schoolmasters' Club Educator of the Year Award
When David Nigel, secretary of the California Schoolmasters' Club and retired Burlingame teacher, asked Jim Cannon, San Mateo County School Board trustee, to recommend a San Mateo County educator to receive the California Schoolmasters' Club award, Cannon without hesitation suggested Karen Philip, retiring deputy superintendent at the San Mateo County Office of Education.
"It was a no-brainer," says Cannon. "Karen has done an amazing job and taken the position to a new level. She has set very high standards and we have tremendous gratitude for the work she has done at the County Office."

the California Schoolmasters' Club Annual Awards dinner in Napa as the San Mateo County educator of the year. Present at the dinner were 180 attendees from nine counties in Northern California, including 15 other honorees from districts across Northern California. Anne Campbell, San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools, gave a brief introduction, thanking Philip for her leadership to the San Mateo County educational community over the years. The audience then watched a short video, highlighting Philip's achievements as an educator in San Mateo County for 38 years. Philip in turn spoke, thanking the County Office staff, the prior districts in the county where she has served, and her family for this honor.
The California Schoolmasters' Club, established in 1893, is California's second oldest educators' association. Its membership is open to all Northern California educators.

EdSource Forum Delves into the Future of Public Education in CA
The 34th annual EdSource Forum, held in Irvine on March 18, 2011, looked at major forces affecting the delivery of public education in California: the fiscal crisis in California, and updates on the state legislature's progress toward adoption of a state budget; implementation of the new Common Core K-12 Academic Standards; next generation learning and technology, and how two innovative programs make use of technology to individualize learning and advance student achievement; and new state education policy leadership.
At the conference, participants bid goodbye to an old friend and welcomed a new state policy leader. Longtime EdSource Executive Director Trish Williams, who leaves to serve on the California State Board of Education, gave an emotional farewell speech. New State Superintendent of Instruction Tom Torlakson rallied the crowd with his optimism for the future of public education in California.
